Re: "How is it possible for a woman to have a wife?" When I was a kid, my dad's best friends were a lesbian couple. (One of them gave me my first microscope!) When I was about four or five, I asked who their husbands were. My dad explained that they didn't have husbands, they loved each other-- like, holding hands love. They wanted to get married. I was very confused-- "But which one's gonna wear the tuxedo?" Big concern, that. "I bet it's [N]," I continued, "because she's taller." That made it all make sense. So long as someone wore the tuxedo, it was all good.

And the greek myths we do get taught have the gay parts conveniently omitted. We learn about Achilles, but never hear a word about him and Patroclus and how megagay they were.
@lampekartoffel
2 жыл бұрын
This part has always baffled me. Did you seriously never learn that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers? Cause there sure as heck weren't anyone hiding that from me or my classmates and while there definitely was a bigger focus on the cishet Greek myths, we were also taught about the spartan army's encouragement of the soldiers having sex to strengthen their bonds and give their all for their fellow soldiers. We were also taught about the origin myth of how love started - which also explains why some feel same sex attraction. I can't imagine how you could even be taught about ancient Greece without learning about at least the M|M stories...
@isabellecasier5702

I was taught that in the greek ancient times couples where promecious and gay was openly displayed as normal. A whole island has been dedicated to greek mytholigy and the gay experience. Leonardi da Vinci was gay or bi, not mutch confirmed because he lived in a strict catholic era and as sculptur and painter he lived off the commissions of the church. There is a reason why we still debate if the Mona Lisa is a female or male. On the other hand my classmate who was gay was throw out of the house with 1 bag of clothes when he came out of the closet ('80) luckely he had a sister and stellar classmates who copied their books and transcript for him so he could resume school in a wimp (thanks to the school lending the office copiermachine). But I was educated in Europe, we do tent to go by the ment "If it does not hurts me, let it be"

Not gay erasure, but trans erasure. So I have a couple of trans friends, and being a young trans middle-schooler I get it. One night we were talking about this guy on my softball team and my mom and I used “she/her” pronouns (I did it because I wanted to make sure he was safe, I’m sorry). This friend is pretty openly trans through his grade despite his dad being super phobic, and my brother knew he was trans, so he decided to say “She’s not a girl, she’s a trans guy.”. I’m not sure if he was trying to start something or he just didn’t understand the danger of saying that bc he’s pretty phobic too, but my mom totally went off, saying, “She’s not a guy, she’s just confused.”. I got super mad and left the table without saying anything, and I feel super bad for my friend. Guess I’m not coming out anytime soon.

"Guess I’m not coming out anytime soon." I feel you. When I was 16 I thought I was straight, but I overheard my dad at a reunion tell my uncle how relieved he was the first time I brought a boy home. I was like "what the deuce? my dad wouldn't be ok with me being gay?" My parents were always so openly supportive of others but couldn't fathom their own children being gay? It's no wonder I didn't even come out to myself until I was 36. I never formally came out to my family, I just sort of fell in love and got married. It wasn't a secret by then, tho. My mom didn't get it until the very end of her life but I had to go out of my way to tell her. I thought making the family drive 3 hours across state lines to attend my big lesbian wedding by the sea where it was legal was enough of a clue that I was gay, but nope. I married a trans woman who my mother proceeded to consistently misgender for 5 years, despite constant reminders. It was infuriating. Eventually I got fed up and was like "Mom, you know I'm gay, right?" I realized that might have been part of the problem. The whole family knew, but she was shocked. "NO!" Yes mom, I'm gay. I married a woman. Every time she misgendered my wife, it disrespected us both. I'm glad I came out to her that day because she died less than a month later. It probably would have bugged me my entire life. At least on that front I got some closure. And, thankfully, my dad has always been super loving and supportive, so my fears over his comment were unfounded. He would have been ok with it the whole time. He just saw it wayyyyyy before I did and didn't know how to handle it at the time. I'll always regret not coming out as a teenager. It might not have been as accepted at the time, but turns out most of my friends were also lesbians, we just never talked about it. Life would have been different. Maybe I could have dated some of my crushes. Who knows!

In the scene that inspired the comic, the older sister (Lana) talks about another female character (Mia) who died previously in the game, and reveals that they had a relationship/connection of some kind. Lana says something along the lines of "that must have been why Mia was so attracted to me" and her younger sister, Emma, quickly chimes in to say "intellectually attracted!". I had many problems with the movie Troy, but the biggest was when they played Achilles as straight, and he was so broken up by Hector killing his ‘cousin’ Patroclus. 😂 just his beloved cousin whom he brought with him to war and shared his tent with. Totally just a cousin.

So I think inadvertently classical gay erasure gave me a strong appreciation and preference for ace relationships and the existence of aces. I used to (okay still do) get so upset that they so often "ship" close friends especially in a hetrosexual traditional representation and blame that for the friends I thought I had who were just there for some weird rando idea that one day we'd hook up. I kind of love that we're figuring out about how many people were gay back in the day

I went to an Art High School, so we spent A LOT of time talking about Shakespeare. Plenty of Scholars argue that the sonnets written to men were not to express a sexual or romantic attraction, but were instead about him expressing admiration for his patron. And the "Dark Woman" of the sonnets was generally believes to be about a woman with dark hair. Even back in high school I was going.... "Or he could have liked a guy and a woman with dark skin..." Like seriously, I do find it hard to read the sonnets written to the fair young man, and not think of them as romantic and sexual.

Ok but like I hate it when people out of school assume that we still aren’t taught about stuff. Cuz in my state, we learned about queer people in literature, we had queer sex-Ed,and we just learned about intersex people. I know that it’s like this in very few places, but they say “it’s not” like it’s not at all happening.

That's a very recent development and your area may be in a minority. Because all of those literature things I heard about from social media more than a decade after I left school, with the sole exception of Dickinson, and even then my teacher tried to say she was asexual. Hell, they GOT RID OF SEX ED at my school my freshman year. This is why I'm learning to be a sex educator.

Not at my school unfortunately. (Conservative Christian school 🙄) One time (last year) we had a English poetry project and we had to do it on a modern poet. One of the groups on my English class had to redo there entire project because the poet they did it on was a lesbian. Luckily this is my last year there. I’m going to public school next year for high school and I don’t have to be closeted any more

Kind of bisexual erasure / bad opinion. I had a "friend" in high school who was extremely insistent that since I am monogamous and will only choose one person to get married to that I, eventually, will only be straight or gay. So, apparently, bisexuality only lasts until you get married I guess.

so here's a fun story about gay erasure: my very much gay friend (a guy) was taking driving lessons last week and his boyfriend countlessly picked him up after the lessons, and they hugged and everything, which the driving instructor was very much aware of. and one time my other friend, a very much lesbian girl picked him up and driving instructor would not stop refering to her as my friend's *girlfriend* from that point on, even after he told the instructor that they are not in a relationship and referred to his actual boyfriend as his partner. But his teacher just... decided to ignore it i guess?? he even joked around being very homophobic.

@@commandercorl1544 fr XD only my two highschool effeminate gay friends could not get erasured, because people would assume and understand they were gay for not being macho But bet that if i had a macho gay friend, a gym bro with beard, everyone would think he is straight 🤡, when usually, if men are extremely macho, are also signs of them being queer as well. I mean, i've seen in my town entire groups of 8 intimidating 6' tall bikers, fat or buffed with beards and braids, like modern vikings, and they were gay... But bet that if they were seen alone each of em, they'd be confused as straight. But in the end i like those ultra macho gays because homophobes piss their pants off. They wouldnt like in attacking 7 guys who are +6' tall and who are wider than a closet with intimidating faces and tatoos. I have a gay classmate who is enormous, a gentle giant,, and he told us how some homophobes he encountered, being more little than him, were scared 🤣 and that shows how cowards they are, going against effeminate chill guys because they assume they're all weak... until one femboy is black belt and makes them regret it :/

@@xd._.28234 Exactly. People think all gay men are feminine because "Well, if they're attracted to men they have to be feminine, because someone has to be the woman in the relationship" and it goes the opposite with lesbians.

Ugh. My girlfriend works in child care. One day at her work a couple of little 5 year old girls declared they were going to marry each other when they grow up. My girlfriend's idiot boss just had to open up her mouth and tell them that two girls can't get married, only girls and boys can... Not only is that factually untrue as same sex marriage is legal here, but there's a married openly gay man on staff. She was the freaking one who hired him. It pissed off one of the other employees so much that she gave a blistering lecture to her own boss about not saying crap like.

I seriously doubt anyone can learn a language in just three weeks. I have been using Babbel and similar apps since I was eight years old (I'm 21 now) to learn Japanese, and I still can't hold a simple conversation. Maybe by the time I'm thirty I'll be able to hold a conversation, not in three weeks. I've been using Duolingo for one year now and I've probably made the most progress I have in a while, but it's still not magical.

What's extra frustrating about the archeological discoveries is that somehow two people comforting each other when they're about to die just HAS to be romantic, EXCEPT when they're both "the same gender". Like, can we just not calling these finds "the lovers"? 'Cause we don't actually know they were "in love". It's just two humans holding each other as they die.

The Isaac Newton one isn't accurate wth. He had one close male friend that could be interpreted as gay yet it's a stretch considering another person said he had no interest in such things and the letters that are often interpreted as "romantic" by today's standards were quite basic for his time We don't know what his sexuality was, it could have been gay, it could have been bi, it could have been ace, it could have been straight. Him not marrying does not mean gay
@John_Weiss

Oh, Newton was _definitely_ ace, and probably aro. As a gay man with a doctorate in physics, I learned quite a bit about Isaac Newton. Like, he spent nearly all of his time working. He was a loner. And he had few friends because he was … a difficult man, shall we say. So yeah, probably not gay, and this is a gay physics PhD saying that.
