Tyrone Power's best role. This scene is the actual ending of the film. They tacked on a horseshit ending because the studio was gutless.

I don't think it's horseshit.... I just believe that del Toro handled it in a better way.... After everything that happened Carlisle finally turned out to be everybody's fool while he was trying to fool everybody.... So his punishment was to turn into the very thing he didn't want to become , a geek .... One standing point between a total animal who lives on basic desires , like alcohol, and a human being who knows that he is not full anymore.... *SPOILERS FOR THE DEL TORO VERSION* When Carlisle hears this offer at the new film he says that he was born for this and then he starts laughing while also crying

Fortunately the re-make allowed the film to end with this last line. Even then in 1947 Power’s fans were to say the least not pleased even with the compromised & somewhat upbeat ending which followed this scene. Zanuck refused to release the film without it. Too bad & for Power he immediately was off to Mexico for another routine costume epic (CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE).

Excellent scene. Excellent movie, (Nightmare Alley, 1947). Of all the movies Tyrone Power made, this was his favorite and he had to fight to get the role because the studio did not want him to do it, and when it was released it was boycotted. A real shame! Thanks!

@@milalara6992 Oh, yes! It's true!! He is marvelous in this movie! And I think that in "Blood and Sand" (1941), "The Mississippi Gambler" (1953), "The Long Gray Line" (1955), "Abandon Ship! (1957) and "Witness for the Prosecution" (1957), he deserved to be at least nominsted, too! Regards!

This comes from William Lindsay Gresham's novel "Nightmare Alley" (made into a film in 1947 starring Tyrone Power). This is a clip from the film.

Wtf is that rendition of the last line? Does he think he's James Bond? What a world of difference from the way Bradley Cooper does it.

Geek is a carnie term for someone who bites off the heads of chickens for nickels. What they do is find an addict, and promise him either a bottle of whiskey or opium a night if he’s willing to be the opening act of a freak show.
