I bypassed mine. I did the bypass under the hood which was a very simple process which cost me $0. Getting to it is another story.

Hi, I live in Europe, Portugal, winters are not very cold rarely below freezing and just -1-3 celsius. Was wondering if bypassing as a preventive solution for my 2018 prius 4 would make sense, because I've already had to top-up the coolant once as it was slightly below minimum level, car has only 40k miles on it. But just for the peace of mind you know ? Could I do it and leave it has is forever without any issue ? Is the extra fuel consumption really a lot because here in Europe it's very expensive already otherwise I barely heat the cabin don't really mind if it takes bit longer if that's the biggest inconvienient. Thanks

Is this the Gasket Masters exhaust gas heat exchanger bypass video prius? What happened to the video on the front end body repair? What a tease! 🙂 Neat seeing the underside design compared to the gen 3. Wondering if there's a hack to get the 1.5's to replace the 1.8's? Crazy the price difference compared.

@@riceburner4747 No, not in regards to the price of the 1.5's. I can find them for like under $500 good working performance. Possibly if a sale, with all the controls. Haven't seen any 1.8's around lately and those weren't under $1,000 when they were available. I'm almost thinking I'll invest in a 1.5 and all the related electronics and most likely sensors (unless I can find specs to spoof connections) to learn on in the mean time until another salvage yard 1.8 shows up and I can get at. Bummer is I missed two this winter that no one grabbed at the 50% off sale at one of the pick your parts yards. Would have been under $500 though no warranty at that lowest price with most everything. Good thing at least is the 1.8's in the gen4's can swap back and forth reads like.

What did they do to diagnose the blown head gasket? My 2016 Prius heater has been intermittently been blowing cold air and showing low coolant in the reservoir. Took it to a local mechanic and they diagnosed a blown head gasket based on "block test" showing hydro carbons in coolant.
@Mrelectric423

I am not sure what they used for diagnosis but the chemical block test for hydrocarbons is fairly reliable. That said I am not sure if the issue in this video would create a positive on the chemical block test.

Hello. I have a 2011 and can't seem to find the part on eBay. What is the actual name? BTW, my issue is that when driving on the freeway in the morning, after a few minutes I get the temperature warning light. After a minute, it goes away and it does not come back until the next morning. The car is consuming antifreeze but the oil and oil cap are clean and the car runs fine so I do not believe the issue is related to the head gasket. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes you could probably reroute the coolant lines away from the exhaust. I mean install a u shaped pipe in place of the gas heat exchanger. Unfortunately this is probably not a smog legal repair so once the part becomes available again replace the entire exhaust unit.

That exchanger can't be found for gen 3, I have been on waiting list and tho paid in advance part not to be seen until early 2023. In the interim I am on Toyota house arrest; meaning I am only supposed to drive slowly and for short trips as the coolant runs out the exhaust pipe instead of cooling the engine. Evidently no part shortage for gen 4 exchangers. Mine went bad due to something flying up off road and denting the damn thing. What I did was paid a shop to run those hoses together and bypass the thing. If your dealer says 2700 bucks for part look on internet you can find it for 1600 bucks. Also after paying shop to run the hoses together underneath car I found a video on here by a Florida muffler guy who by passes the heat exchanger from under the hood by changing the connections on that T hose fitting right behind the valve cover. If you have this problem on a gen 3 look around for it.

@@Mrelectric423 Actually you would be PROTECTING the catalytic converter, not removing it. The argument that the heat exchanger is "smog equipment" just because it heats up the engine a minute or two faster, or because it's physically in the same assembly as the catalytic converter, is a losing argument. The fact that they removed this whole scheme from the next generation, and it didn't exist on previous generations, is proof that it is not required for the Prius to pass any smog test in the world. If they attached the headlight aim sensor to the cat as part of the same part number, would you say that bypassing the aim senser when it dies was part of the smog system?
