Hysteria was doing well, but it was their massive hit single "Read My Body" that really made sales of the album go through the roof!

I like that song on Def Leppard's first album called Hotel California. Unfortunately that's when the bassist Huey Lewis had his left leg chewed off by his gerbil. While in the hospital they managed to glue his leg back on and he learned to play bass without the use of his leg. They've come through all this diversity and have had a number of hits since then including Stairway to Heaven, Disco Duck and another song that isn't out yet. Little known fact Def Leppard originated in Zimbabwe and is comprised of all the original members of Abba and Twisted Sister..

So? Not everyone is built the same. Plus Def Leppard had to wait 3 years for their drummer and theit music got significantly more basic to play. One huge album, the next far less successful and bam they were basically gone. KISS has had successful tours well past Hysteria. DL has not. I do respect that DL waited for their drummer but they all played together as teenagers. KISS did not. Different story as well

Gene had a very similar experience when making the Destroyer album with Bob Ezrin. Ezrin made that very important follow up album to Alive what it was and it was crucial to their careers. Ezrin was also responsible for the outstanding Alice Cooper album Welcome to my Nightmare.

This album bridged the rock and pop genres of that era. The songs are always the most important thing, but production/sound style has to be commercial for the record to sell. Mitt crafted the perfect blend of rock songs and 80’s hi tech pop music. The problem with newer Leppard records is that the main songwriters for their classics, Pete and Steve, aren’t writing those great songs anymore, and Mutt isn’t producing what songs the remaining band members are able to create. Meanwhile, see Vivian Campbell’s great songwriting and album craft with producer Jeff Pilson in his side band, Last in Line.

The only thing that was done one note at a time was the 3 chord jingle in Hysteria. "I gotta know tonight" - - -. They would still be recording it if everything was one note and one string at a time lol.

Come on Gene, tell us your real opinion, did you personally bless their album? Did you educate them with your expertise, did you create the album and give it to them, didn't he invent or discover Def Leppard? . Way too modest of an opinion to come from Gene lol

Diverse, but I don’t think anything really touches hysteria. It’s its own beast, or “animal” if you like. Same with pyromania. They drastically changed the standard.
