I had the privilege of knowing this man on a personal level. He, and his wife Karen, we very good family friends. He was a very nice, sincere, and genuine person, just as you would expect. My favorite memory of him was back over a Thanksgiving weekend in the early 1990s, he and Karen came over for dinner at my Aunt and Uncle's place. My cousin was eight years old at the time, and she was so excited that Willy Wonka was coming over for dinner. He was gracious enough to sit down and watch some of 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' with her and it was such a fun and amazing experience with her. He gained my total respect for doing that.

This is the one and only time that I have seen Conan O'Brien refrain from all comedy and witty sarcastic comedy in front of a guest. This is both a measure of his admiration and respect for Gene Wilder, and furthermore, a measure of Conan's professionalism and talent.

Conan really tuned it down for Wilder. Conan is very gentle with him here and Wilder is quiet soft spoken here , very gentle, just a conversation. You can see Conan genuinely respect Wilder, almost as if to a student to a teacher.

I'm 48 years old. My dad took me to see Willy Wonka when it came out. The boat scene & the bubble scene scared me. I'm watching Wonka today & it's bringing back such wonderful memories. I'm so sad Gene is gone. He always reminds me of my dad. He looks so much like him. What an emotional day I'm having.

I'll never forget what his wife, Gilda Radner said about him when she first saw him from across the room at a party. She said that she thought he was the handsomest man she had ever seen. That's love. They were together until her death.

OK but if you read the book he was promoting in this interview, you'll find out that life with Gilda was a hot mess most of the time. He describes her as often clingy and self-absorbed even before her cancer diagnosis.

Stumbled on this. Hearing Gene speak takes me back to a long forgotten but oh so familiar voice of my youth. It's comforting to hear but sobering to realise he's long gone now and time has passed but his quiet unique humour and warmth will live on as long as we can access his movies especially Willy Wonka my first movie at a movie theater at 6.
