We hear that from a lot of electricians. My best advice would be to link up with a reliable dealer that can assist with the install… and of course take over servicing if you don’t want to get involved with that. Generator installs have led to a lot of new work for our electricians so it could be a loss leader.

@@ipowergenerators4200 ... I worked for a large dealer near 25 years (recently retired) and Generac will grant a dealer status to almost anybody who will sell 6 - 10 units a year. (that's the first price break) OTOH, there's a catch. Someone in the company needs to be a certified tech and there's a minimum list of parts to stock. This allows you to actually get paid for any warranty work. If you don't fully understand the units and don't have a good supply of parts, it can be rather cumbersome. This is the typical situation of a small dealer / electrician. Better to hook up with a larger dealer (read: experienced) and just get a discounted rate from them. You don't make as much up front, but they are set up to do the job and things go smoother. BTW, the dealer I worked for currently has over 7,000 customers on service contract (twice a year routine service) and 15 techs in the field. There are also 4 full time delivery guys out there setting units (to code) and digging trenches for wires / gas. They run like a well oiled machine.

I am a gen tech, you need to remove utility voltage before disconnecting that ac mod. An arch could fry the pcb. I've had it happen before. Also that mod just clips in, so I pull the whole thing out to make it much more ez to wire, and cut the fuze holder of the bottom.

Removing the molex plug would effectively remove utility power but ideal you would want power at the disconnect off any time your working in the switch … we know that usually is not possible. Def so much easier to wire it when I’m clipped from the mounting plate. That fuse puller is a joke… lol

@@H2oToGoWH .... depending on the age of the unit, the delay before start can be up to 15-20 seconds. (Generac) Depending on the age, the retransfer will take another 15 seconds, and then there's a cool-down period that can last a full 3 minutes. You'd need to do some proper diagnosis, but I suspect the circuit board in the unit is no good. If the unit is old enough (15 - 20 years) and you can see the individual parts in the control area, the auto / manual switch itself may be no good. (common problem) It's got 6 wires on it and they do NOT fit through the panel hole while connected. You must pull the fuses and disconnect the battery to swap that out.... and keep track where the wires go! (easy to screw up) BTW, the new switch is slightly different, but it will fit and function the same. If after changing the switch you experience any issues with lack of retransfer or the unit shutting down before retransfer, post here and I can walk you through it. This is usually with 12 and 15 Kw air cooled units. BTW, for automatic operation the switch MUST BE in the auto position. Running in manual is just that. You must shut it off. What I outlined above is only if it fails to do things in automatic.

when your wiring up the ATS, typically you want to get power back on inside the building, so you wire up the line voltage coming from the utility to the transfer mechanism or breaker (depending on your switch)...once you do that, there will be power at N1, N2 and T1 to the board in the ATS. Then if you run you connect your control wires, the other end of the wire will be hot ... so in process of connecting everything you can easily ground the hot causing the fuses to blow. If you disconnect the molex plug you remove the "hot" from the board ... effective making it better to run the wires. The fuses in the board at the ATS are not easily sourced locally .... at least not where we are. Hope this makes sense ... i know its a little confusing.

Chances are you have a bad board however when running in manual it will never turn off regardless of utility power. You would have to turn it off manually. Have you simulated a power outage to test the system? What model unit is it? Does it power the whole house?

@ipowergenerators4200

The transfer switch can function off a 2 wire start signal but you have to program the generator to send the signal once it’s told to by the inverter… we’ve done this with Xantrex inverters use their gen start module. The important thing is in the board at the generator and wiring it in the correct pins at the board.

@user-lo8pd7co7q hi, great question. There is a ground wire coming from the meter… it’s hard to see in the video but it’s there. You should have a ground from the ats to the water meter on the street side and house side(after the meter). You’ll have to check with your local code but usually we put two ground rods in that are tied to the ATS. I believe there should be about 6’ between the two ground rods.
