Don's voice started deteriorating way back in the mid 1990s By 2002 he had lost his upper range and part of his mid range. By 2010 he pretty much lost it completely. I think what happened sometime between 1999-2002 was he damaged his voice on tour and despite having significant issues he continued touring, further damaging his voice instead of halting the tour. The other issue is that he was a HEAVY smoker, apparently he smoked 2 packs per day, and had been smoking since well before he formed Dokken, although smoking contributed to his decline, it cannot be the sole factor. It's a combination of factors. And indeed he contracted cancer sometime in the late 2000s I believe and then recently had a spinal surgery which almost paralyzed him, he couldn't move his hand and could barely walk for a while and that apparently damaged his voice even more. Interestingly enough though, despite being a heavy smoker all through his career, his voice had improved SIGNIFICANTLY between 1981 and 1987, by the time he recorded under lock and key and back for the attack he was in his prime as a vocalist, he increased his power, range and incorporated a vibrato which he didn't have on the first album. What was particularly impressive with Don's vocals is that he was a baritone or even low baritone (he had a fairly low speaking voice) and managed to have an insane range, just listen to songs like Lightning strikes again, unchain the night etc.. The thing is that Don never had much power but he had tricks up his sleeve to make his voice appear powerful, notably in ways he ended high notes or adding a bit of distortion. Don was a pretty unique singer. His voice was instantly recognizable and was a big part of the classic Dokken sound.

Yes, Mr. Lynch hasn't been resting on his laurels. But no amount of shredding can compensate for the fact that the man the band is named after, can't sing anymore. I seriously couldn't watch the whole thing. The voice is an instrument as well, and most vocalists of his caliber baby theirs, or can damage it irreparably. I did hear he had cancer? So maybe that's the issue, but either way, I just want to remember his voice the way it was, and I if that's gone, just stop touring. You are still a god, Don.
