I saw George on his last public appearance at the 100 Club. I seem to recall that he had lung cancer and dementia. He wore a kaftan and an eye patch. He had a cigarette in one hand and an inhaler in the other hand. He gave it everything he'd got. What a character!

What George may have lacked in finesse, he certainly more than made up for it with sheer enthusiasm and pure joy.

He cheekily drops some of Kurt Schwitters' Dada sound-poem, Ursonate, into the call-and-response bit on Fanny Brown.

George Melly what a singer and artist, as a footnote to this video it was filmed at The East Somerset Railway in the steam shed with a good crowd of people who loved his music, as i recal it was shown late at night on Channel 4 some years ago i don`t think it`s ever been repeated so how about it Channel 4.

Great Video of George. I knew him from his first appearances with the Mick Mulligan band. never forgave him for stealuing my girl friend. Still great fun. he had a fantastic knowledge of blues lyrics, which we used to swap in @The Four Posts " pub just round the cporner from the Lytelton club, with Beryl Bryden.

hey palindup. a million thanks for this. I love good time George. first saw him on tv about 1970, "milligan and melly" I was about 10 years old. he did "my canary has circles under his eyes." I was appalled yet fascinated at this fat bloke singing and juddering around the stage like he'd lost control of is body. saw him at the chancellor hall in Chelmsford, same time year as this recording. a great entertainer. personally I think it is cecil Parkinson on clarinet. thanks again. timeclimber.

As an aside from the unique and individual Melly sound, George also wrote for a main News Title as an art critic. He lived a full life giving so much enjoyment to his army of fans

Freddie Mercury, so-called extrovert, is a minnow compared to George. Has there ever been a bigger personality than George?
