You are extremely articulate and methodical in your handling and explanations regarding the small pets. I know it's hard for beginners to deal with so many profoundly differing opinions regarding care and handling of gerbils. Small animal vets and biologists warn of the very things you recommend... but then you are calling upon many years of small animal handling. It may be suggested that those new to gerbil care, may rather follow the safer practices as they gain more hands on practice? Young caregivers are often anxious to share what they have learned first... it can come off as overly critical. Thank you for sharing and for the motherly way in which you present your information...

Gerbils have thin skin on their tail, as in the wild when predators catch them by the tail the tail skin will shed off. So. Do not pick them up by the tails.

Great video. Very Informative. The only thing is literally every source of gerbil Information that I've read or watched states that you should never grab them by the tail. They drop it like a lizard if prey were to grab them by the tail.

Keith you are so right. We think the owner for life should be the one who names the pet. I worry a lot about folks who name all their babies and then end up with way more than they can properly handle. Thanks for addressing the issue.

i was also suprised that you were able to handle the babies without the mother killing her offspring afterwards.

also the tails can come off if you pick them up by them. I really don't think you can just assume that that won't hurt them. their tails are fragile and you could always do it on accident.Hamsters are crepuscular, but it depends on when you care for them. Iv'e heard all sides on when gerbils are active so I think its the same for them. And even though they are dessert animals they still need constant access to water unless in unuasual sircumstances.

i was surprised to hear that interbreeding within the same litter is acceptable to produce new colour lines. does not it increase the risk of severe deformaties.

I do not agree how you are handling those gerbils! You do not pick them up by the tails. It can mentally and psychically harm the gerbils.

Do not use wire wheels it damages there feet and tail when they run on them

Gerbils are some of the nicest small animals to handle. Yes you can handle their tail and we have never harmed one over many years of doing this. Wire wheels do work safely and because gerbils are so sociable, inbreeding does often occur. Are there problems with any of these? Yes there can be so always be gentle and careful.

I understand gerbils natural environment is sand, is it a good idea to use sand mixed in with shavings as bedding. also I have been advised not to give gerbils vegetables and friut except for once or twice a week and they always need fresh water available. I am getting so confused as what to believe is best for my gerbils

You really shouldnt be touching those gerbils when they have no fur . The scent of you on the gerbils skin will make the mum ignore them attack them or even kill them. I know u have good intentions but ur not doing the right thing.
