Excellent video, very clear and easy to follow. I'm having issues with my home automation for my fans and front door lock. I will check out your other videos. I just subscribed! Thank you.

Good video man. Right to the point, practical and advice and, maybe most importantly, no distracting lo fi beats music (or ANY music.. like we have on EVERY DAMN VIDEO THESE DAYS). It really is refreshing having videos that don't vye for your attention.

@michaelsleen I am using the NFC tag to let my family know if the dishes in the dishwasher are clean or dirty. have a "dumb" dishwasher connected to a smart plug. When the dishwasher runs/finishes it toggles an input Boolean to "clean dishes". And when I unload it I scan the NFC tag which toggles the Boolean to dirty Dishes. This status is visible to everyone on the wall mounted tablet nearby. Currently I have not found a good way to automate this without the manual effort of scanning the NFC tag. If you have a good suggestion here, I am all ears my man!!

One idea is a contact sensor on the dishwasher door. When the sensor changes from open to closed after the dishwasher cycle completes (based on the smart plug with energy monitoring), you could assume this means the clean dishes have been unloaded and the machine is ready for dirty dishes, and trigger the input boolean to switch without the need to scan an NFC tag.

I’d love to see a solution to NFC that doesn’t involve a phone. Like maybe a little battery powered zigbee reader. That way you turn it around and carry different tags on a key ring and wave them at the reader to run automations.

My phone is second most likely device to be with me, after my watch. I wish Apple would open up the Apple Watch NFC to allow for home automation use cases, and not limit it to Apple Pay.

@@michaelsleenHave you tried any other devices though? I haven't powered up my pixel watch in over 6 months because the battery is so bad that it's just not worth it to me, but I think it has NFC.. I figure it will be able to use with home assistant which would be cool

I have not used NFC tags with an Android watch, but last I looked at this, it had a similar restriction as Apple Watch in that the NFC only worked for payments.

Just picked up 2 ONVIS 5-key switches. 15 programmable buttons per device. Let's me (and anyone in the house) operate my shortcuts and automations w/o my phone.

Hi, can this also work with android and google home?
@michaelsleen

For Android, you'll want to use an app called Tasker. It is not as user-friendly as the Shortcuts app in iOS.
@sypreme

I'm less familiar with Tasker, but I know people use it on Android for their NFC automations.

Can you do the same with Alexa please?
@michaelsleen

You can use NFC tags with Alexa by enabling an Alexa skill called URL Routine Trigger. You then have to visit the website www.virtualsmarthome.xyz/url_routine_trigger/ and provide your Amazon login credentials. I do not know the trustworthiness of this site to be providing them my Amazon login.

You went through all this for a garage door opener? You know they make garage door openers. Hit the button. Garage door opens. Takes 1 second vs the 5 minutes spent on doing all this.

That is correct.

I believe he’s using it as an easy to understand example. I use this on the outside of my house in place of the old keypad. More secure. In his example it’s more secure than the classic button, because it’s not easy access into your home/garage with someone breaks in the car.
