In many cases, depending on location, the armor of Muslim warriors and knights largely resembles the armies opposing them. There werent truly significant differences although all factions somewhat retain a certain flavor due to their culture. The eastern side looked very closely like early Turkic warriors while believe it or not, *the muslims in Spain actually wore plate armor* , most notably their elite units and warriors who coud afford them. Mainland Arab armies closely resembes the Byzantines etc etc. There are many general stereotypes saying muslim warriors were lightly armored, this is not true at all. Muslim frequently fielded heavily armored cavalry and infantry units but "heavy" is relative to the times they were involved in. Humans always learnt from each other and armies especially will absorb any sort of military knowledge and technologies that can at least give them parity with opposing forces.

Another thing to note, during the crusade the muslim/crusade armies were also very similar looking. And muslims were also using straight swords very closely resembling the swords of Europe. The popular Arabian cruved swords came a little bit later and they were actually Turkic-styled/influenced swords, when Turkic muslims became more prominent and dominant leaders in the Muslim world, including the use of Horse Archer armies. If you look at the early swords of the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W and his companions, they were all mostly straight blades.

>the muslims in Spain actually wore plate armor Erm, citation needed. Also of note, many Muslim Andalusians were native Spaniards anyhow, and Christian Spaniards often served Muslims as mercenaries, so them using European styles of armor wouldn't be all that surprising and in fact is known to have happened. >There are many general stereotypes saying muslim warriors were lightly armored, this is not true at all. Uh, yes it is. It's true for pretty much every Muslim army everywhere for most of history. In the Middle East and North Africa in particular, Arabs and Arabized peoples were well known to have fielded light cavalry and infantry in great numbers. Of course, they also fielded heavier cavalry wearing mail and lamellar armor, but the vast majority of Muslim troops were lightly armored, and you can find countless contemporary accounts on both sides that corroborate this, along with dozens of manuscripts, paintings, and decorative pieces in which heavy Muslim units are almost impossible to find. Compare this to Western and Northern European historical accounts and illustrations, which depict almost every mounted combatant in heavy mail, the only notable exception to this being Spain specifically because of Muslim influence (see Jinetes). So yes, as a whole Muslim armies were equipped much lighter than their European contemporaries.

This might be true for later Abbasid times. But early Islamic time it would be mail armor. The ummyaid armies were very similar to the Byzantines.

You're armor set is based on the 20th century, low budget Arab movies and TV shows. Its completely inaccurate. The correct historical set would include chainmail under or over clothing, plus scale or lamellar armor made of leather or steel. It offers more protection than the fantasy leather breastplate in the video. Check out the books by David Nicole from osprey publishing and the Razmazfar Persian martial arts channel for all the other types of historical armor examples
Great video! I love that KZitemrs such as yourself have finally appeared to give us hungry viewers insight into Arab and Islamic arms, armour and tactics. I'm into roman history, I would say scale armour was used to a fair degree. Of course popular culture does grossly over emphasize the use of many pieces of equipment. Loved the vid. Peace.

From what Im aware of, men in the old days were like men nowadays, men wear what they want. European men and Arabian men wore light cloth in the Arabian summer and heavy cloth in the European Winter. I imagine most European men in the past would take off their jacks and grand helms when travelling long distances in the summer in Syria. I imagine most Arabian men in the past would put on wool coats (tunics) and a coat of mail under their cuiras when camping in the winter in France. Most men today dress in many clothes, not only their father's clothes, so Id imagine its not so different in the past

Arabian armies were often much more fluid and mobile. Especially the horse archers were tremendously effective. Wasn't the chain mail much finer and lighter than European?
@Carl007Jr
Жыл бұрын
The Persians, particularly the Khwarezmians, were not focused on speed and maneuverability, they were certainly focused on heavy cavalry, even their horse archers were very heavily armored. They still retained the ancient Persian cataphract type heavy cavalry as well, and would wield the famous tabarzin heavy axe, commonly. Though it's true that Turks and Arabs were definitely speed, maneuverability, and hit-and-run focused.

Well plate armour did exist in the middle east , early forms of plate where called 4 mirror armour and in later piroids moorish plate armour in Spain and morroco was common , however I think you are talking about the 12th century and it is true in the 12th century Arabs where most likely wearing either mail or lamlar and maybe both if they could afford it but most common armour would have been padded kaftan or gambasons

@@kessler682 Properly tailored European plate doesn't really restrict mobility all that much. The real cost is that every movement fatigues you a lot more simply because you're moving more mass whenever you do anything. That being said, comparable heavy Muslim armor weighed just as much, if not more, and was not distributed as well, nor was it as protective.

I've been trying to find info on the 4 mirror (plate) armor. Not sure you know or could at least find out; if the 4 plates rested on your hips when wearing it or was there a way to tighten it around the natural waist? I could make assumptions, but if there's some information you might have that'd be cool.

I almost cried, our history, its lost! ... at least I got the answer I want about salahdin armour in the movie, it was scale armour all that time (I wonder what's the change of that being true, that he used a scale armour). however: 6:28 I could understand why its not popular, but why its not effective? its not like they are heavier then lamellar armour.
@GoldenMiddleAge
3 жыл бұрын
I know, it's very unfortunate! Well with scale armour, if you notice they are a bit like flaps (best word I can think of). They hang down. It protects you if someone is striking you in a top down motion. But because they are like flaps and open from the bottom due to the hanging, it's risky. If someone strikes you coming in from underneath in an upwards motion, the sword will get through the gaps of the scales, and therefore it will not be effective. I hope that answers your question!

I looking for medival arabic armour, but I dont think that what You show here is correctly. It is more LARP costume than real historical east armour :((( Of course in Spain arabic knights use full metal armours or lammeral armours but it was metal, not lether LARPs armours. Breastplate in this movie event is not making like historic. Check it in some museum. And lammeral leathers armors are not weak, they give good protection against cutting, and are more mobile than metal.
