comparing HLG base iso-400 to Natural and Cine-D iso-400 is wrong! Natural and Cine-D base iso is 200, and it should be at iso 200.

I’m Still confused, lol. I’ll try different scenarios myself once it drops, I guess. Do you think HLG is applying some HDR like algorithm (detecting local contrasts and stuff) or is it more like a special internal LUT sort of thing without any analysis involved? A sky gradient against some shady rooftops should reveal perhaps.. Ps. I’m so disappointed with how the GH5 constantly has a weird green/ yellow cast on everything. It’s like there’s something fundamentally wrong with their white balance or something. Other than that, so happy with it!

Thanks for the comparisons. I am wondering if the mushy detail could be down to noise reduction as you have more detail in the shadows that bring up noise more? Also, how does HLG compare in exposing the highlights/whites in SDR compared to V-Log? I have noticed with V-Log it is very easy to overexpose whites (I normally shoot at +1 stop to avoid noise in the shadows and over exposing highlights, but that can over expose anything white in the shot.) I quite like v-log, but I have noticed when I edit it and up the saturation in After Effects, it makes red blocky areas appear in some parts of the image which I don't like, maybe that is macroblocking from the codec, I am unsure. Using color boost in Resolve does the same thing and can make some color banding appear in cloudy skies as well.
@CRFTSHO

There was NO external noise reduction performed on those images. I found it easier to clip the highlights in HLG versus LOG. To me HLG acts more like one of the base level profiles than anything else. We have not done a ton of testing to adjust the profile internally as we prefer HDR10 for HDR delivery versus HLG.
@DynamixWarePro

I believe its because you're taking an HDR format and forcing it out of its native color space into an SDR color space of REC 709. If you see HDR (HLG) content on an HLG monitor - it looks amazing.

The skin tones on the HLG look too yellow and saturated. as more I use the GH5 I come to the understanding that Cine V is the most reliable profile in terms of skin tone and even General Tone. Its a bit dark so I lift the MP to 15 and a little tweak on the curves, the GH5 is much less noisy than the GH4 so I found it possible. I recommend to try it.

Just tried activating new V2 HLG for the first time per Panasonic V2 instructions. Set Rec Quality to MP4 HEVC, which supposedly forces Rec Quality 4K / 30p / 72Mbps / 4:2:0 / 10-bit / LongGOP / ... except that it really DOES NOT. Instead, Rec Quality is 4K / 30p / 100Mbps / 4:2:0 / 8-bit / LongGOP. Raw footage does NOT trigger HLG HDR on my 2016 LG OLED B6 TV - which happily triggers on all of the HLG HDR demo clips that I have found online so far. What am I missing? Is there another sequence for setting modes/formats that DOES engage HLG in HEVC 72Mbps? Yes, I know - with 59.95Hz System Frequency - that there are actually SEVEN ways to record HLG using H.264 (various combinations of 4K/FHD, 30/60p, 4:2:0/4:2:2, 8/10-bit, all LPCM), but none of them plays directly on TVs (according both to Panasonic and my own tests). I assume this is pilot error on my part. Please enlighten. Thanks - and keep up the great work!

What settings are you using to get HEVC and/or HLG? And, are you recording internally or with an external recorder. I can't figure out how to get HEVC in any mode other than 6K photo. FYI, FCPX 10.4 & High Sierra ROCKS. Now you can import HEVC video shot in the 6K photo mode directly into FCPX with sound, no converter required. 6K just looks so much better and requires less color correction.... I don't understand what's going on. V-LOG is a major PITA, even with the new camera LUT built into FCPX, I can't get it to look as good the other mode (Std or Vivid or 6K); 6K photo simply looks amazing. In FCPX, it says its Rec 709, HEVC. I'm confused.

Looks like HLG is Rec2100. Rec2020 is another HDR format which can be edited natively in Davini, FCPX and probably most other editors. blog.extramaster.net/2016/09/srgb-vs-rec-2020rec-2100.html

not sure why you say only 2 editing software can deal correctly with hlg because when a editing software converts a footage to work on it internal it convert color components to 32 or 64 bit bit floating point numbers so it keeps way more information than any camera video codec does, being hlg, log or raw
@CRFTSHO

Only two programs can actually work and output the correct color space - REC 2020 - and deliver for HLG (hdr) triggering.

+mpgxsvcd 90% certain it's 200. Cam at office but HLG works differently than log. It's available in all modes.
@LearningFast

So what if ISO 400 in LOG isn’t the same thing as ISO 400 in HLG or any other profile for that matter? The camera indicates that the exposures are even when Vlog is set to ISO 400 and all other profiles are set to ISO 200. If that is the case then in the tests you did all of the other profiles were 1 stop over exposed which really would be concerning with the HLG profile since it always appears to be underexposed. I even mentioned that it looks underexposed with HLG the very first time you posted a video with it. It sounds like the settings to help you judge exposure correctly with HLG need some more investigating. It shouldn’t be underexposed like that and I am also afraid you shouldn’t be choosing ISO 400 over ISO 200 with it. I have proof that ISO 200 produces lower noise than any other ISO in all of the profiles that the current official firmware can shoot. I will post that in the next few days. ISO 400 in Vlog-L is the correct ISO to use but not in any other mode that the official firmware can shoot.
@CRFTSHO

+mpgxsvcd not sure I follow. The basics of trying to meta game hlg to do something it's not intended to do are a bit more concerning. The question was if hlg could replace the need of log and I would say no. They like flavors of ice cream feature a similar set of ingredients but are all different flavors. I would say always expose for the sensors native iso which for GH5 is 200 in all modes except log. Therefore yes there will be more noise however if attempting to compare hlg to log I would want to know what they both look like at a base iso as in the end if you're not displaying hlg on an hlg format and thus conforming the colorspace to rec 709 why not just shoot in natural or cine d or any other color profile? I've not seen any substantial gains from shooting hlg for an SDR conform.

You're going to need to transcode it - which means you'll most likely convert the color space from 2020 to 709 thus killing the HLG portion. In order to retain the HLG metadata and color space you can import it into Davinci Resolve.

Can resolve grade HLG correctly?
@dan_hitchman007
5 жыл бұрын
It can now. However, you may need to get an HLG to Log LUT (based on the camera you are using) in order to flaten the profile and make it more grade friendly. HLG has more of the color baked in. Users of the GH5 and GH5s are using HLG over VLOG L, even though it's a delivery profile and not a flat grading profile, because these cameras capture an improved dynamic range and the entire 10 bit depth with HLG mode over VLOG L (it has to do with the limitations inherent with the light consumer version of Panasonic's VLOG profile in these particular cameras). With more pro level cameras with greater bit depth and dynamic range, LOG and RAW are the better choices unless you need a quick turnaround with minimal grading and a pre-baked Rec 2020 gamut.
