Definitely not the correct way to deal with hogweed. It needs complete removal of the roots or best method is systemic weed killer when it first appears and the plants are small. Not forgetting that if it has seeded ever then you will get regrowth for a few years.

Its a weird issue this,,, the only decent weed killer has now been banned by the EU (glyphosate),,, and the Dept of Environment, rivers, rural affairs have made this into a gov money making scheme. It is a notifiable plant,,, but they will charge this farmer a fortune for removal of this patch....
@richardlee2488
3 жыл бұрын
@@rjb10101 what is even worse is that it is illegal to let it grow. It is illegal to dispose of without adequate control measures and must not be composted or put in landfill. However.... It is NOT subject to the same enforcement as relatively harmless to human health plants such as ragwort and Japanese knotweed etc. It is now spreading across the UK rapidly and I have seen huge areas across the country. In many places there are plants that are reaching the seed stage on roadside verges which will only add to the spread. Ironic that the government bodies responsible for its control also fail to attempt to control the roadside ragwort, japanese knotweed and purple flowering rhododendron but have time and manpower to point the finger at private landowners. For the record you can still get some weedkillers if you are a farmer and I agree the groundwater concern is a valid one.

The best eco friendly way to get rid of it is to cut it down after it has flowered but before the seeds are mature enough to be viable. The plant has spent all its energy into flowering and after flowering it dies, root and all. This method is a bit lengthy and you will need a few seasons to completely get rid of them as this plant flowers only in the second year of its life. Also the seeds in the groud can stay dormant for a few years.... they can sprout at a later date. So even though you have cut and prevented any new seeds from going into the ground for two consecutive years, it is still possible you will get new plants from seeds that seeded themselves 3 or even 4 years ago. The area that has been cleared of hogwed should be monitored many years down the line just to make sure that some dormant seed hasn't awakened.

Round up doesn't kill it, just scars it and kill everything around it. You will need shit tons of it.... but do you want to poison your soil and ground water? Cutting them down after they flower but before they go to seed is the best and most eco friendly method. The plant has used up its entire energy into the flower and after flowering it usually dies, root included. The key is to catch it before the seeds are mature enough to be viable. Will take a few seasons to get rid of it completely as the plants flower only in their second year of life, and the seeds in the ground can stay dormant a few years and might germinate few years later.

@@samharper2175 Thanks. Curious... do all you white people's skin react terribly to its sap? Or do some of you tolerate it quite well? I don't think I have seen that plant here in my tropical country but I have seen similar videos with poison ivy. I'm sure I've played with that plant when I was a kid and all I got was a tingling sensation, so it surprises me a lot to see videos (particularly of white people) whose skins look like they have been bathed in sulfuric acid just for brushing on it.

@@mocabe01 Regardless of the amount of melanin in your skin, the sap of the Giant Hogweed or even worse The Sosnowsky's hogweed will still cause your skin to be sensitive to sunlight which will lead to severe 2nd or even 3rd degree burns. If you burn the hogweed, it will release a gas that has the same effect. If the sap or the gas makes it into your eyes, it's best to go to the nearest hospial right away, otherwise it can lead to temporary or even permanent blindness. The best way to get rid of them is with a specialist if it's grown too big, then you're gonna need a special suit for it, you have to remove it at the roots, what this tractor driver is doing here is really not ideal, as they will just regrow next year. Or if they are that many in one spot, mass use of herbicides, even though that doesn't always work either, the Soviets have tried using the Sosnowsky's hogweed shortly after WW2 as a reliable way to mass feed cattle, and eventually it backfired horribly, and now the russians have been trying to get rid of the Hogweed since the 80s. Oh and forgot to say that in the case of the Sosnowsky's hogweed, ingesting it will lead to chromosomal alteration. So what you played with as a kid is definitely neither Giant Hogweed or Sosnowsky's Hogweed, most likely it was common hogweed, motherwort, cow parsnip or angelica.
@SpiritDragoness

It is an invasive species. Each plants life span from germination is 2 years. It flowers in the second year of its life, after flowering and spending all its energy into flowering it dies, root and all. The best way to get rid of it is to cut it down after it has flowered but before the seed has matured enough to be viable. The mother plant will die after that, but there will be no new seed going into the ground. This method needs to be repeated several years coz giant hogweed seeds can be dormant in the ground for a couple of years. Land that has been cleared of hogweed should be monitored many years even after it has been cleared just in case a seed that has been dormant for hears decides to wake up and germinate. They are a pain and getting rid of them is a lengthy process. Often the mistake is made by cutting them either too early or too late. If cut too early, it will just grow a new flower stalk, or it is not given a chance to flower in its second year of life, then its life will be extended into the third year, and this way the plant can survive up to 5 years. But if you let it flower properly, it will just die. It is very difficult for people from outside to catch the right moment when to cut them down. Only a person who sees them every day can catch the right moment when to chop them down. I think it will be much easier to get rid of them if the local people are trained to recognise the right time and are trained the right methods and all necessary safety precautions, ass well as correct disposal of the cut down plants.
