I like how you got the amazon gift cards and then you just splurged it on your rats. Id do the same. With my first paycheck from amazon (warehouse jobs are so exhausting) i bought my 13 year old hound dog a extra large brown couch dog bed just because i could.

My sisters rat is not the smartest (she used to have two, but one died. Her current rat is over 2 years old as it is, possibly closer to 3). When our dog comes, rather than being scared, she sniffs at him interestedly. He gets concerned and leaves. It's funny, because he's not a small dog, either. He's a 7-ish year old labrador.

Try meat baby food on a spoon or on your finger. I normally use a banana, my boys love it lol. I usually eat the banana until about a quarter of it is left or less. With the skins till on it I hold it to the opening over the cage ( door open ) and they love coming up to it and eating it. Great way to tame them because it stops the ratties from running away with the food

@Shadow The Rat Super Important! - Rats do not have Gallbladders & their Colons do not encircle the Viscera & along with other details regarding the bowel & colon being separated & split into sections & the colon basically being incomplete, (I can explain in technical biological terms if You prefer) They cannot in any way process red meat. It is super bad for them. I give Mine chicken which is a healthier meat protein for them. One that's safe & that They can fully digest & get rid of 100% of the waste product from. They love the pureed veg baby foods just as much especially Sweet Squash or Pumpkin. They really do see them as a treat.

@ShadowTheRat

Rats eat about a pound per month, often a bit more when young, so it should last about 6.5 months, likely a bit less. It does start to loose some of its nutritional value with time once opened though so be sure to keep it in an airtight container.

@ShadowTheRat
6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it takes weeks for rats to use new items like wheels or hammocks. The best thing is to just put a few treats in them to draw the rats attention, then leave it in the cage on and off. Also, in the winter, even my hammock-loving girls don't use their hammocks. It's just too cold, and instead they use a shoe box that I stuff with fleece and other nesting material as a sleeping spot. Finally, some rats are just less hammock-oriented. I had a girl that was very "wild-rat" like in that she was very wary of humans and preferred to burrow rather than climb. She only slept in a hammock a few times during her life, and it was always with her hammock-loving cagemate Shadow. But as soon as someone approached, she'd bolt out of the hammock and sleep elsewhere. My current shy girl Cream just started using hammocks after 5 months with different ones constantly in the cage. She initially bolted out if you walked by, but now will sleep in them even when other rats aren't present. And of course, some rats just hate flat hammocks. I imagine they feel exposed in them, and that they'd much prefer the honeycomb or pocket ones sold specifically for rats.

How do u train ur rats do play basketball?
@ShadowTheRat
6 жыл бұрын
I shape it. First I clicked train the rat, and train them to fetch a ball to my feet. I do this using what I call the "box" method, which you can see here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pY53t5d7hYR_ZY4&app=desktop Next, I place a shallow bowl in front of my feet. I use the object they've know how to fetch at first, and use food to lure them into placing it into the bowl. After practicing both sides for a bit, I begin to roll the ball away. They'll run after and fetch it (as they've learned to in the past), and I'll be holding a treat over the bowl to reward them. If they put it in the bowl (which is only an inch or so high), then I give them the treat. If they dont, I withhold the treat and try again. And over time, they learn how to place the item into the bowl from and angle. Then I gradually start to move the bowl around, and to change the height of the bowl. Once they can place the fetch item into the bowl from anywhere, I can transition to an actual hoop. By this point, they understand that placing the fetch item where I point is key. So I can just point at the hoop, and they'll place the ball into it. At this point, I assign them one of the left or right hoops. I'll initially just have out that hoop and be pointing to it. Once the rat has placed the ball into the hoop a few times, I fade out my hand and begin to put the ball farther and farther from the hoop. Once they're good at that, I add in the second hoop. They never get rewarded for placing the ball into the second hoop, and continue to be rewarded for putting it into the first hoop. Once they are accurately placing the ball into the correct hoop, I add in another rat who has been trained to place the ball into the other hoop. Sometimes I'll initially give them two balls, especially if one rat is more experienced and is thus better at snatching the ball. But I quickly fade this to using one ball, and then voila! You have a real rat basketball game! (kzitem.info/news/bejne/lW9qzKOKfmRkoYY&app=desktop)

If your talking about the rope nets clips I’ve already replaced them, I use tiny plastic bird clips now with great success and not only are they much safer but incredibly easy to work with (no more working to pry the metal apart, these bird clips slip together with ease and are great at holding even my heaviest rats together).

Probably you know more about this than I do, but I just came across this video about rat communication -- including that they can "squeak" at 100,000 cycles per second, and that most of their communication is at frequencies way above human hearing. So who knows -- one day your rats may be able to "tell" you what they think of the amazing amount of actitivites and stimulation you provide for them. This video is about "Deepsqueak": kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2uCv4qujYeLm4I

Why do you say that? Oxbow adult rat food is considered one of the best lab blocks out there and perfect for rats!
@amyspets3599
4 жыл бұрын
It has hay
@ShadowTheRat
4 жыл бұрын
@@amyspets3599 To start alfalfa isn't bad for rats - they can't digest it, but in the same way they can't digest lettuce. Its pure fiber for them and in small bits helpful for digestion. The only time hay is an actual issue would be if its in massive amounts and flavored so that the rats intake a ton. Only then could it cause blockages in the intestines. With that being said only the young rat and garden variety versions includes alfalfa as a filler - and that's actually why its considered poorer quality than their adult food. Here you go - ingredient list for the adult food (note the rice filler): Ingredients: Whole Brown Rice, Oat Groats, Wheat Bran, Wheat, Soybean Meal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Soybean Hulls, Calcium Carbonate, Yeast Culture Dehydrated, Flax Seed Meal (Linseed), Inulin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Soy Oil, Methionine DL, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Wheat Germ Meal, Salt, Magnesium Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, Choline Chloride, Natural Flavor, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Oxide, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-Monophosphate, Biotin, Niacin Supplement, Copper Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Rosemary Extract, Cobalt Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vitamin K Activity), Calcium Iodate, Vitamin B12 Supplement. And ingredients for the young rat food (containing the less quality filler alfalfa): Ground Corn, Soybean Meal, Wheat Middlings, Soybean Hulls, Dried Whey, Cane Molasses, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Meal, Alfalfa Meal, Limestone, Flax Seed, Sodium Bentonite, Menhaden Fish Meal, Lignin Sulfonate, Monocalcium Phosphate, Natural Flavor, Dl-Methionine, Salt, Magnesium Oxide, Choline Chloride, Yeast Culture, Hydrolyzed Yeast, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Ferrous Sulfate, Mixed Tocopherols, Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Monophosphate (Vitamin C), Zinc Oxide, Manganous Oxide, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Biotin, Vitamin A Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vitamin K), Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Calcium Iodate, Cobalt Carbonate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Rosemary Extract. So yeah, Oxbow adult is a great rat food for all ages. I suggest doing your own research before believing any of the hype about rats and hay or alfalfa in particular. Yes problems can occur if they intake a huge amount, but that goes for any food and alfalfa by far is benign and fine for rats to consume in normal portions (plus again Oxbow adult doesn't even contain any).

Not really sure what you mean by "garbage" here. If you mean the eco chews, then yes, they are unhealthy - but its only 2 of them, and they only get to shred them as a rare treat. It'd be like you eating a bag of Cheetos once a month, sure, its not the best, but its not going to harm you. If your referring to Oxbow, its been proven to be one of the most nutritionally complete diets out there for rats. Nothing "unhealthy" about it, in fact, I'd wager that its better than most home made rat mixes (not trying to insult you here, but many people don't research what their rats need nutritionally, so their home mixes are just as bad as pet store seed mixes). I don't have the knowledge to make my own rat diet, so Oxbow is most certainly the best choice for me. Don't forget that health is also two-fold - I've heard of rats being fed Kaytees rat food (which is known for actually killing rats who eat it long-term), yet living for 4+ years with no health issues. You can chalk this up to good genetics or luck, as its certainly not due to diet. At the same time, I've heard of rats living on a great diet (both home made AND good store lab blocks like Oxbow) with minimal "poor" treats yet dying of something like a pituitary tumor at under a year old. My girls are fed Oxbow as a main staple, and get treats like Cheerios or veggies on a daily basis. As of now, my whole crew is healthy and energetic as ever, and this particular group has never suffered a respiratory issue (or anything serious in general). Would I chalk this up to their food? No.
