I remember first being exposed to this album in 1980. I suffered from the curse of addiction to alcohol and piles of cocaine for 27 years. It followed me from Saginaw mi to Oakland,Boston and Atlanta and after being a failure at two rehabs I felt hopeless to ever being sober. But God is great y'all, in 2004 he answered my cry and delivered me. Tears of gratitude are flowing as I type. May 27th 2018 I celebrated 14 years sober!

A great artist who sadly many have forgotten. He merged poetry, music and social consciousness into the fabric of his work. This is what REAL African American music is, not the product placement that is just a 3 minute commercial for "I got mine and you need to get yours" mentality and the violence advocating pontificating many of today's young black artist call music.

There are certain artists that do not get the marketing, advertising, promotion , management. Gil brought a serious message with social consciousness that was out of the mainstream. It didn't matter to him how many records he sold. He brought the real deal but also wanted to be joyous and celebrate the music. So you got the best of both worlds w/ Gil.

Gil and I were friends from back in the late 70's. I met him on University Avenue in Berkeley (Keystone Corner). Since them we had kept contact over the years, and once, while in D.C., I happened to be sitting in a club, and said to a relative, Gil Scott was a good friend of mine, and 2 tables away, lo and behold, Gil was in the house. Needless to say, we had a great time with him that night as he sat in and played. A true genius and gone way too soon...Rest in Peace brother Gil...

I met Gil in the late 80's in Berkeley myself. What a coincidence. A great man who I got to know, shared our poetry together and until his death we shared a true friendship & I consider him my mentor although he was only 6 years older. Thru the years and every time he came to the Bay Area we hooked up. The last time I saw Gil was when my band opened for him at Yoshi's Jazz Club in San Francisco. Three months later he was gone. My heart felt such sorrow of such a good friend. I knew of his music since High School and was so proud to become his friend and brother.

I learned about Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson in college. Late 70’s. I’ve always been enthralled with jam bands. And Gil! I had the vinyl and turned my son onto the band. He took all my albums. He was a bassist but could play many instruments. Parents have to keep legends alive. Anyway my son died in my arms suddenly one night heart failure last year in June 2021. It’s been devastating but I’m finally after almost a year to listen to music again especially the bass that he played impeccably. I only had 1 kid but at least on this earth he was able to appreciate this band. A kid after my own heart!!! I have to add that I loved Racetrack in France, Angel Dust, etc.

Celebrate, Celebrate, Celebrate... the life of GSH. Proudly I have listened to Gil from the beginning. His message & music has inspired me countless times. I cherish having gotten to meet & become friends with Gil over the years. My band has performed with Gil 2 times now. The last was 6 mos before he passed on his legacy to the world. Gil, my friend, you are sadly & deeply missed. Bless you always. And thanks for the love & wisdom you shared with the world thru your words & music.
