Never will not understand why he wasn’t as big as Elvis. His voice by far passes Elvis and if not all male singers today and back then. He never had flashy costumes or stage pyrotechnics like many have. He is definitely one talented entertainer who all he needed to do was walk out on stage and the audience was wowed. Gorgeous, talented and humble. Not full of himself like the majority of rock stars are today.

Weeeelll... Really? I mean, he's a really terrific singer and I'd rather listen to his music than Elvis's any day, but humble? Bare-chested in a white suit, cavorting across the stage like Mick Jagger on Viagra. Isn't he the very epitome of the Italian Stallion, except without the physique? I love listening to Gino; can't stand watching him. On the other hand, the ladies in the audience seem to appreciate him very much....

Gino always had excellent drummers (Casey, Graham, Mark etc.) I think the drumming is what attracted me to his music along with great melodies, vocals, and superior instrumentation for that era. Brother to Brother blew me away first time I heard it. Still blows me away. Gino was way ahead of his time and deserves much more credit for his contribution to the music scene. I would consider Gino Vanelli and Donald Fagen as my top two artists of all time. Both are geniuses in their own right.

My brother Markham went through dialysis with Mark Craney. They used to set up 2 kits side by side and let her rip. Last time I saw Mark Craney was at Markham's funeral. Healthy people should have such positive outlooks as those two. I was blessed to have known them.

I'm a long time Gino and Mark fan (being a drummer myself). Craney used the Ludwig Cortex series kit in those days. What's left unsung are the incredible sound engineers (studio/live) that mixed Mark's kit so perfectly (given the limits of the sound equipment available in those days). That Cortex series didn't have bottom heads; a late 70's thing that went away and never came back. Crisp sound that accentuated every nuance that Mark created.

I might see some similarities between Craney and Bozzio with their splashy, odd time insertions hi hat work and incredible snare/tom work but that's about it. Mark Craney was a gift to music. His drumming was so appropriate and perfectly executed for the music he was playing, especially when he played with Gino Vannelli and Jean Luc Ponty. Complex, but very fluid, off the wall rolls and insertions of notes here and there, oddly inserted cymbal and hi hat strikes and amazing bass drum control. Overall, he was such a creative, gifted drummer. I wish there was more video footage of him out there. Gino Vanelli's Brother to Brother album is my favorite Mark Craney work. Perfection and very well thought out. Mark once said that playing with Gino was the most demanding of his creativity to come up with and execute perfect and impressive licks and beats. He never played a song exactly the same way but always still had the original (album) vibe. I have to listened to these songs 1,000 if not 10,000 times over the years and still hear little nuances that I'm trying to figure out. Just amazing. He is also extremely good on Jean Luc Ponty's "Imaginary Voyage" and "Civilized Evil" albums. Incredible drum work. So precise and impressive. The other thing about Mark Craney's drumming that isn't talked about is the actual sound of his toms and hi hat. Toms were always "fat" and "throaty" sounding. Powerful, deep but crisp sound. I'm sure his mic's helped achieve that sound along with his kit back in the Gino days which I believe were the Ludwig Cortex series and later on switched to Tama maple. He used the original black label Paiste 2002 hi hats which have a very sharp, "chick" sound and he really liked to emphasize that sound. I have the red label's which also have that sound but I wonder how they compare to the black label which I have not heard in person. He loved his hi hat and I heard that it was his favorite thing the emphasize in many of his beats. To this day, out of all the drummers I have admired, respected and somewhat patterned myself after, including Cobham, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dennis Chambers, Chester Thompson and many more - all huge influences and incredible - Mark Craney stands out as the one I want to sound like the most if I had a say in the matter! I've been a Terry Bozzio fan since the Frank Zappa days. He was incredible back then. Extremely gifted as well. Incredible independence, speed, accuracy and creativity. I have to say that I'm not wild about his current stuff. A drum set that requires 4 semi trucks to haul and half a stadium to set up in! Kind of ridiculous really. It's like he wants to play full tunes on the drums, like playing a piano. Although admirable and beyond genius, I find many of these new "compositions" to be boring and none of it really highlights Bozzio's true talent as a drummer. I believe his Zappa days was his best drumming ever! He is so incredibly ambidextrous it's amazing. His first DVD, Terry Bozzio Solo Drums, is the best in my opinion and off the charts for what I'm talking about. I could on and on here about Vinnie, Cobham, Marco, Dennis and others but enough is enough already!!

Fantastic explanation and analysis of the great, Mark Craney. Like other true geniuses, Mark had a style like no other which is impossible to emulate. I, like you, have been listening to Mark's recordings for decades and I still hear new subtleties each time. I was lucky enough to see and hear Mark live at Cobo Hall in Detroit with Gino Vannelli back in 1979. I wasn't a drummer at the time but I KNEW there was something special emanating from that drum riser. I was so taken by that concert I actually started playing drums a month afterward. I've been drumming ever since (38 years and counting).

Such a great description of Mark Craney's work, Steve. Thank you! It is sad that Mark died so early and suffered so much physically even at a very young age (complications of type 1 diabetes and kidney failure took him). But a great talent, and a great guy. Yes. I also liked Graham Lear, who had his own style in Gino Vannelli's "Gist of the Gemini" album, and worked beautifully with Gino on his live performance in Philadelphia in 1975 on "Where am I going." He did an amazing drum solo that night that wowed the crowd to silence!!

Bozzio's work with Levin and Stevens (Black Light Syndrome) was the last of his work I listen to...I feel you Steve S. And I agree, BtB would have been swarmy Vegas music if not for the killer players that conveyed Vanelli's notions...without the crispy and schooled playing on that album it would have been Tigerbeat teen girl music. Props to VG for having the horse sense to stitch that album together with killer players like Craney, Rios, Haslip and Feldman...(thougth I admired Rios' playing I did not like his guitar sound, far too reedy).
