ACT I, SCENE 1: WAGON RIDE: "NED PETERS WAS A HUSTLER"
NED: (driving Shirley in the wagon)
Ned Peters was a hustler
From Independence town;
He warn't a college scholar
nor a man of great renown-
He warn’t a college scholar
nor a man of great renown-
But he had a way o’ doing things
and doin’ ‘em up brown.
He drive four pair of horses,
just like you’d drive your own team,
And you’d think you was a travelin’
On a railroad driven by steam;
He’d get that wagon there on time,
or Ned ‘u’d bust a seam,
’Cause he loved those strong white horses
Just as coffee loves cream.
SHIRLEY:
He said he came to Sacramento
on a boat named Jenny Lind;
then headed west, like all the rest,
and went digging in the mines.
NED:
He carried mail and carried passengers
And started on the dot,
And his team of horses, so they say,
Was never known to trot.
And them teams o’his’n, so they say,
Was never known to trot.
But they went it at a gallop
And kept their axles hot.
SHIRLEY:
The first job he signed for
was in a place called Negro Hills.
His work there was a futile chore,
left him nothing but more bills.
NED:
And Ned, he didn’t allow no foolin’,
When Injuns hove in sight,
And when bullets rattled at the stage,
He druv with all his might;
When bullets rattled at the stage
he druv with all his might;
He’d holler “Fellers, give ’em hell,
I ain't got time to fight.”
SHIRLEY:
He said that later in the Southern mines
his luck turned up the shine.
But the man who owned his contract
played him foul and wouldn’t pay.
NED:
Then the way them wheels ‘u’d rattle,
and the way the dust ‘u’d fly,
You'd think a million cattle
Had stampeded and gone by.
SHIRLEY:
They sent a gang of thugs to threaten him,
knocked him down and scored him with a knife.
Said the boss to Ned with a vile grin:
“You should be glad that you got off with just your life.”
Once a slave, but now a free man,
they’d rather him hang than let him vote.
A black man, not a citizen,
you’ll never see him make his case in any court.
NED:
But the mail ‘u’d get there just the same,
If the horses had to die.
You’d think a million cattle had stampeded and gone by.
But the mail ‘u’d get thar just the same,
If the horses had to die.
