There is subtlety here. The despair of the mother matched by the despair of the father.

Hush wee babby, for yer daddy's comin' in Stumblin' up the stair and missin' every yin Rotten wi' beer and stinkin' o' gin He's drunk again -- as usual Oh my God, it's a weary, weary life Who wid be a drinkin' man's wife Who wid thole a' this trouble and this strife Who but a silly woman Hush wee babby, he's comin' in the door Drunken big feet are skitin' over the floor He's had a bucket, but he's thirstin' for more He disnae ken when he's beaten Hush wee babby, listen tae him sittin' there Wi his bloodshot eyes and his tangled hair Mooth fu' o' big talk and eyes fu' o' despair And blaming me -- as usual Hush wee babby, yer daddy's gone tae bed The morn he'll no' remember a' the things he said But his tongue wis sharp and a' the wounds they bled But then I'm used tae bleedin' Hush wee babby and close yer weary eyes Cuddle intae mammy and stop yer tired wee cries And in the mornin' when ye decide ta arise Yer mammy will be here waitin'

So many families experience this and you wonder how to exist like this. Like any drug, if only a cure could be found to prevent getting to this situation. Such misery that will wreck havoc on many generations. So sad.

So true of life in major cities in the 1950's and 60's when women & children had so much to be fearful of.

As a child, my brothers and I were the recipients of the "drunken man" as was our mum! The police couldn't intervene and the neighbours despised us! Having said that, not one of us kids ever beat our kids, and treat them as gold as they should be. Just a sad delusioned man who knew no better.............................his childhood was dreadful.........

having worked in the DV field one thing really surprised me, not so much that there are approx 1.5 million reported cases per year of DV against women, bad enough though slightly on the decrease. But what surprised me is that there are approx 900.000 cases of DV against men and the figure is rising fast!

Sadly, the Irish-German-Scottish ancestry(mine) comes thru to many of my family - even when it, by chance, skips a generation. There are many fine things in each heritage, but for some of us the love of drink can destroy even the finest. Prayers to all, esp on the receiving end.

Deerie deerie me. What painfully sad memories of growing up in Glasgow in the 50s this lovely wee sad song conjures up " Sad eyed weemin dragin' greetin'faced weans roon' the Pubs on a Friday night, lookin for her man, who's went straight tae the Pub frae' the Shipyaird, Wi' his full peypoke in his bin" It was usually a race against time. The sooner she found him. The less chance he had "tae drink the bluidy lot". And when she did she'd probably get punch in the gub for her trouble!

I've also met a few hard working couthie men who have the opposite problem, i.e., they're wives are alkys. Scotland might have the distinction of having the highest percentage of husbands being beaten. Trouble is they don't do such surveys.

having worked in the field of domestic violence, i can only say that you would be very surprised how many men and esp children get beat by their wives/moms. I was amazed. It is waaaay underreported bc men feel ashamed to admit it. Big problem for both sexes.

In Europe: "This put the country behind Luxembourg, Ireland, Hungary, Moldova, Czech Republic, Croatia and Germany. Many countries just don't know the full extent. The USA has 15 million known alcoholics. So, yes, we have a problem, but no, we're certainly not alone as some would suggest.

It's a horrible subject, isn't it? On a recent return to Scotland I saw on a news programme that in one year recently,2.5 million cases of this type happened in South-West Scotland alone...as a person with experience of boozing,I advise ye Scots to take extra care when you're drinking "The Water O' Life" because sometimes it can lead to the opposite......

You do know there's only about 5 million in all of Scotland. Don't know where that two and a half million figure comes from as alcoholic's.
