Gluck-Mottl: Ballet Suite No. 1
Boston Pops Orchestra conducted by Arthur Fiedler
Recorded March 24, 1940, in Symphony Hall, Boston, on RCA Victor 78-rpm matrices CS-047196 through CS-047199. Issued in 1941 as Victor Musical Masterpiece set M-787 (records 13649 and 13650).
The composer-conductor Felix Mottl (1856-1911) seemed to make a specialty of arranging earlier composers' music; besides this and a second Gluck Suite, he published orchestral suites based on works of Gretry, Lully and Rameau. This particular Gluck arrangement is very tastefully done and includes the famous "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" from "Orfeo ed Euridice," as well as selections from "Iphegénie en Aulide," "Armide," and "Don Juan."
The Gluck-Mottl Ballet Suite No. 1 is in four movements:
1. Introduction - Air gai (at 0:23) - Lento (at 1:26) - Air gai (at 3:09)
2. Dance of the Blessed Spirits (at 4:29; middle section at 6:29)
3. Musette (at 11:07)
4. Air gai (at 13:29) - Sicilienne (at 14:52) - Air gai (at 15:55)
