When I left the freeze I was down to 13% and when I got to 4,000 feet and the ice melted away it started charging again and by the time I was back to Tucson, 80% charged! I can't wait to add the next one.

@@AveRage_Joe I watched the other video. I think that battery is a better match for my needs. Thank for the info. I have a question. I plan on using a Growatt 6k inverter with a single 48V CONDOR ELITE 3 - LiFePO4 - 231Ah - 11.8kWh battery. I would like to know how to connect a generator to the Growatt 6k inverter so that it will charge the battery. I will be completely off grid using a 2700 watt solar panel set up to power the inverter when the sun is available, which should work great for my needs. But, if the need arises, it would be great to know how to safely use a generator to recharge the battery through the inverter without damaging the inverter or the battery. If you care to offer any thoughts or help in that regard it would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

@@AveRage_Joe Thanks for the reply. Glad you're m making a generator video. My questions around the generator have to do with the thought I've heard generators do not produce pure sine waves, and that they can harm the electronics in inverters and smart batteries. I've heard the electricity they make is even worse when the generator is working at over 60%. So I've been interested in inverter generators. It appears to me that they produce pure sine wave electricity. But, like I said in the beginning, I am far less than an average Joe. Just trying to learn before I pay out the bucks. Thanks again.

I havent heard any of that. Do you have any links for that? My generator is an old military diesel 5kw generator and produces a pure sine. There should not be any issues at all. Matter of fact if the gen kinda waivers in voltage, the inverter should output 240v cause it can smooth out the waiver. Anyway, do you have any info on where you heard that, Id love to see what they are doing and what they are using. Much appreciated.

14,000 battery house drawing 1,000 watts shows 14 hours until empty. Or figure Maximum draw down recommended so this is a guess 20% left in battery. 14,000 x 80% 11,200 watts of battery would give you about 11.2 hours of run time. One can see in very hot areas of the country 2 or 4 of these would not be over doing it. what is the average charge up time for this big thing. How much solar power is need to recharge. My 18kwh drawn down to 40 % takes 3.0 kw from panels about 4 hours to charge back up. I can see where more solar panels could be needed on some installations I feel you can not have to many solar panels because of rainy days and you can not have to many kwh of back up batteries. @@AveRage_Joe I have a total of 11.75kw of PV, 48kwh of lead acid and a 10 kw inverter at a remote site 1.5 miles from home. To preserve the life of the lead acid I only discharge to 50% so effectively only 24kwh. We do have two EV's so hence the large system which helps to avoid grid charging. To help feed the home and to make EV charging more flexible I have made up two 30kwh LFP battery trailers which transport the power alternately to the home. When fully set up with another 9kw of PV I am hoping to be fairly independent from the grid. However the winters here in the UK can have some fairly cloudy days so getting rid of the grid entirely is unlikely.

When you first got your 12000t, I had gotten one a couple of month prior to your video, and expressed in the comments how it was handling everything I threw at it just fine. I lied, when it got really warm out (~115F) where I'm at, I couldn't run the AC and drier at the same time with the rest of my house load. I still really like the 12000t, but it ended up not being able to handle my full household momentary peak loads. So I left the AC (outdoor compressor, the air handler is still on the inverter for winter heat) and drier (and electric range plug) outside of the inverter. I figure if we have a super grid-down emergency, I can turn off my main breaker with those things and backfeed them by removing my interlock for the grid bypass in my subpanel and then just be careful about managing loads. I have some old grid-tie inverters with limiters sitting around that I can program the battery voltage points when to feed power - limited by the load, but it occurred to me that I would need to put those circuits in their own subpanel that doesn't feed the grid side of the inverter, so it couldn't form a loop under certain conditions. Then it would also be straight forward to have that subpanel be fed from the inverter or the grid as well. Ian from watts247 ended up using his 12000t as a managed autotransformer for a cluster of Growatt SPF5000ES's, which can also be the source when doing maintenance on those. I really like that idea, although I don't have the budget for it right now and am satisfied with what I have.

Very nice, especially for the plug and play crowd for that sort of capacity. I just ordered a set of 230ah cells to replace my BYD packs that are basically crap at this point, little less capacity and won't have as nice of a case, but combined with my other couple 100ah packs it should be enough to get me mostly off grid. 400ish amp hours is a nice bit of storage. That big battery along with the others you have should be more than enough to get you off grid for days at a time provided you have decent solar production. Congrats man.

@@AveRage_Joe No retiring the BYD pack as it limits the things by cutting off when it hits its cell high limits on the weak cells. Might repurpose it as a 24 volt pack for something else where I can parallel the two 24 volt packs into one and it might be a bit happier. With my other packs and the new one I'll have about 430ah of storage or a bit over 24kwh. That should do well for a bit. I'll likely add one more inverter as well to handle some more 120 volt loads and it'll give me a 3rd solar string. I've got another 2.5kw of panels to put up. That'll bring me close to 10.5kw of panels at that point, with 9,000 watts of inverter capacity. At that point the only thing that won't be on the inverters is my electric oven. Should really only need grid power on the really cloudy days then.

The ecological price still makes it not worth though. Mining of lithium end other materials are irrevocably unsustainable. To get a fax grams of material, tons of earth have to be extracted and treated. It’s purified with nasty chemicals that end up fucking up the environment even more.

Inshallah, I'll be able to finally contribute to this in May ish. Will be getting my batteries in Pakistan. Took me nearly three years to figure out the details. Set up my own private limited company with an import/export license to make it work 🤣. Naturally now I have to sell the batteries as well, because I am not rich enough to do all the setup for fun 😁. Super excited to test them out. The electricity usage is much higher in Pakistan, especially for people who run air conditioners. That is what I will be using primarily for my load testing for continuous discharge of the battery. My only worry is the charging and discharging limit. Let's say the inverter is max 60amp charging and discharging. If I run that everyday, chances are in our hot weather I will ruin the inverter. If i run it at 40amp, 280ah battery will roughly take 7 hours to charge up, that is practically a whole day. In my inverter, we have hybrid inverters here, with net metering. I have to ensure that when solar is out, I don't end up selling the electricity to the grid utility company. Lots of little things. Hopefully with everyone's help, I'll be able to design good batteries that work for Pakistan primarily, and the rest of the folks abroad who might be interested.

So, I'd love to see how to build a larger whole-house UPS -- like 200amps or so. Perhaps using a stack of rack-mount batteries instead of this wall-mount? Oh, and as a married guy with four cats, one of which is a tuxedo that looks almost identical to yours, and another 99% black cat that looks very similar to your other one, I'm all up for any cat-related out takes that you might want to share with us. 🤣 Thanks!

Hi.. No one seems to be able to answer this question? I saw your video on the Hawk big battery.. I see you have a Growatt inverter... I would like to purchase that or the 6000 watt one.. but I have a Generlink transfer switch on my meter .. it’s a 240 v plug that I plug my propane generator in... if I got that Growatt system can I find a way to still use my Generlink connection... Thanks I would appreciate any help .. I can’t seem to find any...
@AveRage_Joe

Yeah you can do that with the growatt 6kw or the 12kw. Both are 240v inverters so it would be the same, just wire in and go!!🤘

Fantastic video review Joe. How do the think the Kong 15’s would do. They are only 1kw power capacity but weight almost 300lbs more at 650. What am I missing? Heat on the battery clearly isn’t an issue. The Kongs don’t wall mount. Do you plan on running at 80% use? Down to 10% upto 90% or 20%-100%. Kongs show 10000 cycle at 100%. So if you run at 80% they say it should go up a potential of 50% more cycles. At 15000 cycle that would be 40years. So jacked for off grid capable life.
@AveRage_Joe
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I saw a few different Kongs that were listed with a few different amp hour ratings from 11kwh to 19 kwh. They may be using the same cells but might have more cells in parallel for increased amp hour\capacity. Also construction of the box. 10000 cycles would also explain the same cells. These cells are BADASS!!! Yeah for normal operation Ill probly be in the 80% range. Top end voltage Ill probly be around 56.4 and low end at 46.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed the cell voltage differential(“delta”)during different states of charge when viewed on the phone app(that app is highly accurate). The battery obviously came “top balanced” because it was very close at the start. During the long nearly flat part of the battery’s voltage slope the delta was very low and climbed a bit only during moments of high discharge. This is absolutely normal. Then as the battery was nearly depleted the delta climbed a lot even with a low load to about one hundred millivolt. This is also absolutely normal. During recharge the delta reduced and could have been lower if the charge current was lower but this is normal. When the battery had finished charging the delta climbed again to about fifty Millivolts and yes again absolutely normal. You don’t have to have a low delta at the top charge again like it was when it was delivered. Soon after you start discharging, at say 98% the delta will drop back under 10 or better. If the battery is held at a higher state of charge (anything over 54.5 volts) the battery management system will have time to bring the batteries to perfect balance but it really isn’t necessary since a little bit of balancing happens each time it’s charge is usually enough. The lithium battery has a voltage slope with “knees” (a sharp change on the curve) on both ends. At the beginnings of those knees you will always see an increase of delta. And with greater charge or discharge current, the greater the delta value. Don’t panic, it’s NORMAL.
@AveRage_Joe

😆🤘 Yep all 100% normal!!!
