First off.. great great video luke.. i enjoy your stuff. But this was the one.. Odin couldn't kill Tyr. Cause otherwise he couldn't take his form. That is why he has all the other prisoners as well. I totally disagree with the crater being locked away. After birgir jumped off the ship They had that conversation about he can't be dead. Soon as we reach land again 2 sec later His dogg was running next to atreaus. And he said father I think he is trying to tell us something. And I straight jump into that and found the crater. It's really not locked behind end credit They actually spell it out for you and almost push you into it. Like they do other times saying. Well we can explore or do you want to continue. Except this time atreaus yells at you and runs after the dogg I guess most didn't see, hear or pay attention. Which it not an issue. But it really isn't locked

The reason kratos said to start training after fenrir dies is highlighted when Atreus disappears. If you search for him behind the house mimir will ask why you’re checking the training grounds and kratos will say Atreus was grieving and mimir will respond “oh kratos, I know you’re trying”. This speaks to how kratos handled grief and how also shows throughout the game that shutting it out and training hasn’t helped him, even with Faye he still grieves. Also Faye’s scenes are crucial to kratos’ development in changing his nature and wanting to keep living for those around him.

I love the Faye scenes. It's a shame people bitch about them, saying that they're not important, or that Faye was a boring character, blah, blah, blah, but that just goes to show they don't understand Kratos has a character and want him to be the way he was during the OG trilogy. Also the compass doesn't tell you the general direction of your final destination. It leads you to the next turn you need to make. That's why it swings so fast. So, in the secret shrines Tyr’s name isn’t actually mentioned. Atreus saw the spear and assumed it was referring to Tyr since Tyr was always depicted with one. I'm a little confused by the critique that Atreus should tell Kratos about Ironwood and what happened there. Angrboda literally told Atreus that he couldn't tell anyone about Ironwood, even his father, because Odin could find out about it and then annihilate whatever life was still in Jotunheim. And considering what ends up happening with Týr, it's clearly for the best that Atreus kept his cards close to his vest.

I feel it depends. Atreus could have done it in a way that allowed his father and him to only know. If he communicated with him. Kratos wouldn’t have leaked that information easily because of the circumstances. The main reason why Atreus didn’t tell story wise is to make Kratos think he went to Asgard as thus kickstart the mask plot. All he had to do was tell Kratos that he wanted to tell him something in private went out to the middle of nowhere with no one else and tell him about it. Heck telling Tyr would also add to the whole thing about how Atreus messed up in terms of the story while providing more of a show of how vile and petty Odin is. Like imagine what would have happened if the way Odin was revealed was because he was too hasty with attacking Ironwood which tips Atreus off that there is a spy in their midst leading to Odin being found out. Then Atreus has to recognise how dangerous his recklessness and naivety is to others

There’s this thing they do with Kratos, which you can see Judge do in an interview where he talks about his kids, and it’s a lower lip quiver of a strong man being overwhelmed by emotion but struggling to contain it. Everything about Kratos’ moments is underplayed and it works so damn well as not many video games are even confident enough to even attempt that kind of subtlety but also as an evolution of a man who was so ruled by his emotions trying to control them while still feeling them just as strongly. It’s honestly masterful character writing, as well as amazing acting from Judge and top tier animation. I honestly now regard Kratos as the best, most compelling video game character of all time. Joel and Arthur are great, but Kratos is on another level, with a continuous arc spanning all the way back to 2005.

I viewed the ending and the prophecy as the idea of what the Norns said, that prophecy is just understanding people’s character and changes. The entire story is about how if you want to change your fate, you need to be willing to change. Kratos was not prophesied to die, he was prophesied to die if he kept pushing Atreus away and had him close his heart to those around him. They didn’t just fulfill fate or buck it, they changed it all together. The ending with the reveal that Fae destroyed the murals and made a new one of Kratos is not a prophecy but really showing how Fae viewed Kratos. He is not some destroyer who will only lead to his death he is a great man who will come to be worshipped in the future, or at least that’s how she views him. The entire game Kratos struggles with his memory of Fae and the reality and worries about if fate defined their relationship but in the end Fae destroying the murals reveals to him that no, she truly did love him for him not for prophecy. The biggest theme I got from the game is the idea that your decisions will lead you down your path and it needs to be your decision to change that will keep you alive. Kratos, Atreus, and Freya all made a choice to change and grow, Odin made his choice not to which directly leads to his death (explicitly stated by Atreus), and Sindri makes his choice to change and grow darker and seek vengeance which leads to him ultimately killing Odin. To sum up the ramblings, prophecy in the Norse Realm is not a true depiction of your future but rather it is an extremely accurate guess of the actions you will perform if you refuse to change your nature.

The Norns scene is important because they explain that Kratos will kill Heimdall, cause Ragnarok and destroy the realms and then die, because he cannot change his nature. However, Kratos does, right before and during Ragnarok, thanks to Faye, he has the epiphany that he must not 'close his heart to it', but instead open his heart. Suggesting that perhaps if Kratos had not gone to save the Midgardians, he would have ended up dying because he failed to change his nature.

Although, not gonna lie it didn't work well for me personally as I would constantly accidentally press it in the heat of battle causing more harm than good for me. 3:59:00 There is actually a reason for Tyr being alive, and it's that Odin needed to keep people alive to assume their forms, so if you notice the other cells of the prisons, it's filled with creatures and characters you've seen throughout the game, and I think this detail adds yet another layer of despicableness to Odins personality. All this time he could've embodied any creature and been spying on you that way as well. I agree the discovery of the real Tyr is kind of underwhelming, and I was hoping he had a somewhat different vibe than when Odin impersonated him. You can actually travel to the nine realms after freeing him and seeing him 'meditate' in random locations. He still seems broken and sad. Not like the Tyr we head in the stories of the previous game. But not every character needs to have redemption I guess.

Luke, I think you need to do a retrospective on this game, because a lot of things haven’t aged well with it and a lot of things really pale in comparison to the first game. Not really in terms of gameplay, that’s all fine; but in terms of narrative. The way characters will spell out their intentions & feelings with zero subtext being used, the way Kratos has become a strictly reactive character and how Atreus is the one pushing the story along, the way they absolutely fumble Freya’s forgiveness of Kratos with Kratos uncharacteristically opening up about his Greece days (which, mind you, he hadn’t even really done with Atreus prior.) The way the Asgard Gods were written to be just some sort of dysfunctional family (Thor the alcoholic, Sif the mom trying to keep everything together, Thrud the rebellious teen.) I mean, let’s be honest, can we imagine characters like Magni, Modi, and Baldur living among the rest of the aesir we see in Ragnarok given their characterizations in the first game? I could go on and on, but I really think you need to sit down and look back at this game’s story.

In regards to the prophecy of Kratos dying for them not to be true is because of it being a false prophecy. False prophecies played a huge role throughout the game with finding the shrines then going inside to find the true prophecies. So it was kind of like the game telling you that the mural you saw might not actually be the case. Also I do believe it was a line mentioned by Angrboda (not entirely sure, maybe mimir) basically confirming this, stating that Faye lied about the prophecy to the other giants in order for Kratos and Atreus to create their own path.

My biggest pet peave was the war. I felt like the battle really wasn’t focused on. Ya ya I get we were coming to the climax and probably had a time crunch but think about the potential we could of had, I mean in 2018 all we hear is Thor and the snakes legendary battle. How nice would it have been to see them fight in the backround or have little cutscenes that because of there battle opens up pathways you can go through during your pursuit to Odin. There should have been more danger with the main characters instead of sending them off screen to help. I felt like the Odin felt was really lackluster tbh and The wasted potential that was within could have been even better and dramatic rather than a really crappy 3 on 1 with a square button and Odin ranting. To me his fight was the easiest in the entire game and I played on hard but that’s just me. This is my opinion but I rather had them end the game preparing the war while finding some weakness for Odin then set up the next game to focus on the war and post war rather than to me it took me 48 min to complete the entire war segment including thb

One of the themes of kratos is just how tired kratos is of fighting and his past of being a killer and his frustration that the part he hates is still required. That’s why kratos story to Atreus before ragnarok is so powerful and kratos throwing down his weapons after looking for Atreus and being bare his exhaustion of hoping for peace to such an extent that the thought of death is not only possible but seems necessary for it.

3:55:24 Luke is actually wrong here. He says you have to keep track of the combinations yourself. I thought so too at first but in the main arena room there are six circles with all the possible combinations on the floor. They all start lit up and as you do them the light goes out. So the combinations that are lit up signal the ones you didn't complete yet. I don't blame him for missing this I didn't notice until my last combination. However they did think of this even if it is excuted in a clunky way.

The Norns said there was no such thing as fate, it was just that people are predictable and generally do not change. I do not think the rift had anything to do with the giant's prophecy abilities. The story seems to strongly indicate that seeing the future is a common trait that the giants have. The shrine from the previous game was destroyed because Faye went back and wanted Kratos and Atreus to forge their own path. Fate is a significant theme in this game but so is changing your fate by being better than you were, which is what the Norns were meant to highlight, it's just that in their experience people do not often change. It was "be better" that was the key to avoiding the prophecy that was woven throughout both games.

My biggest criticism of this game is the extremely bad ending. It feels very anticlimactic and I was left with a ‘is that it’ feeling. For the whole game to feel like it was building up to something, just for nothing, it really soured the experience for me. After the mural and loki stuff, then the thor tease at the end of the last one, i kind of expected something more to actually happen in the closing moments to set up the next game which will obviously happen. Atreus just going off by himself was kind of a weak way to end the story. I was expecting some kind of post credit sting like the thor scene but … nothing I also didn’t like the fact you spend 1/3 of the game as atreus collecting this mask for it to all mean nothing in the end. It just kind of felt like a waste of my time as the player going through the atreus sections for it to not lead anywhere. My idea: Personally i feel like a better direction for this game to have gone is to have made the rift a gateway to another realm to then set up the next game. Odin’s motive would then have been that he knew ragnarok was coming all along and that he has been trying to find another realm to escape to. By tricking atreus to find the pieces of the mask, atreus unwittingly would give odin his way to escape. Odin steals the mask and tries to open the rift to no avail. Then after you fight him and beat him, odin grabs atreus as a last resort to keep himself alive and only then realises the mistletoe around atreus’ neck is the final piece of the mask. He then uses the mask to flee through the rift. The next game would then be atreus and kratos travelling to a new realm to try and stop odin. Similar to the last game, there would be an optional post credit segment where after you have said your goodbye to freya etc. kratos and atreus would have gone through the rift and appeared in a jungle-esque setting. Following the path and some dialogue players would have then reached a gap in the tree. Upon reaching the gap in the treeline, the camera pans and reveals a sea of sand with lush oasis’ and pyramids before cutting to black.

Not trying to be rude here, but you've completely missed the point of the game if you think Atreus' story goes nowhere. The point is that he is told its his destiny, he makes it who he is, someone useful, special because he can help Odin. Him breaking the mask is both breaking the reliance he has on Odin to be important, and breaking fate as well. He makes the choice the fates would never imagine him making, and in doing so saves his father and cripples Odin. As for seeing egypt through the rift, why set up a sequel when you're finishing a story? What would it have added? The point of the rift was that odin had done terrible things, abusing his family and discarding people so he could learn what comes next, what happens when you die. Because the gods are supposed to be an allegory for us. In real life, we dont know what happens when we die, and many people would do anything to know that. But doing so at the cost of other peolpe is wrong, and that is part of the choice atreaus makes.

odin as an antagonist, not just on the physical plane, but his purpose and stand against the beliefs and mentality of Kratos, Atreus and the other members against him is by far one of the most compelling aspects i have seen in any recent video game of the last decade and even stretching into the 2010s. from introduction and death, he maintains a manipulative and deceitful character in which is shadowed by a facade of 'moral' and 'just' intentions towards the protagonists. It was extremely prevelant in the conversations he had to atreus throughout his stay in asgard: his obsession of the crack is simply based on unreachable knowledge: knowledge of where he stands, what he is and 'where i will go when i go', and on the basis this simple wish is understood by any viewer or player as they relate to our own curiosity of our place and leave in the universe, which grips to us and is perceived to be a simple good act of will for all beings of the norse realm. However, knowledge of his actions throughout both games, his relationships and narrative impact on the landscape and people demonstrate this is only a curtain for his true intentions: from the giants and his annihilation of the race, to the torture of Mimmir, Freya, Tyr, Thor, Baldur, Atreus etc., all of these actions and relationships are result of Odin's attempts of a dictators control on the entirety of this mythology. Odin believes that total control and knowledge on every aspect reachable will give him security and the knowledge to retain his perception on the world: he attempts to retain such control through manipulation, deception and annihilation of every person he interacts with, and the results can vary from those who abide by this manipulation (such as Atreus and Thor for the better part of the game) or in the cracked images of his former allies (Freya, Mimmir etc.); but the crack hidden below asgard is the fundamental and final example of an aspect odin cannot control, his one vision into this crack supposedly would answer his own questions and provide a sort of 'control' over his existence in death and afterlife. All of his actions in the narrative circulate over this single desire: to have a sense of control over his time and death so that he can understand his finite position in the realms. Even in his last moments at the end of the game he is adamant in this goal, but in the end he is killed as a result of the control he tried to have over the realms. This character has so much presence in the story that it makes me shudder: every character we have interacted with has been manipulated, deceived or affect by Odin's wrath: from Mimmir through his imprisonment and manipulation into deathly decisions, Freya exiled and lock in Midgard, Thor and his depression/alcoholism and submissive nature, even Sindri in his disguise as Tyr and later murder of Brok, alongside the Giants demise. All of the realms have been shaped for odin to control: in Asgard he controls the settlements for protection (yet later forces them into battle behind walls), in Hellheim he imprisoned Garmr to prevent chaos and damage, in Svartalfheim he orders the dwarves to created weapons and machinery for Asgardian soldiers. Every single moment of these two games is a result of odin, and that understanding emphasis his desire for control. But the greatest transition is through Kratos' prevalent yet slow impact on the realms which brings odin demise. throughout the trilogy of the first section of God of War, Kratos has been manipulated, lied and submissed into actions that resulted in the death of the greek panthion, thus has gained a greater perception on the world around him, and specifically the lies and deceit of characters he meets: this can be seen through his inital confrontation of Baldur and Odin, where he demonstrates his perception that both characters have an ulterior motive that is shrouded by these lies. Consequentally, he recognises the potential damage possible and attempts to prevent this through his own belief of how these scenarios should go. Slowly, he frees and draws alliances with those such as Mimmir and Freya, and eventually, alligns with the Aesir and other species to result in the death of Baldur, and the fall of Asgard. granted, he would break his trust and have conflicts with the allies around him at moments, but he amends and seeks truth to further the good of the realms. As a result of his campaign across the nine realms he conquered the might of odin and the asgardians, awaking the manipulation enforced on Thor, and joined those who also saw the true intentions of odin (such as Sif and thrud). Odin up to this point has such as control where he could not be exposed or challenged in any manner, not until kratos arrived into the norse realm: bit by bit, his lies and deceit fell apart through every interaction and death at the hands of kratos, and eventually ended up in the final rally of asgard. As soon as Atreus would break the mask and seal the crack, he understood that all of his efforts were for nothing (from the death of the giants, to the exile of Freya, and the death of Brok), his plan has fallen into pieces, and he knew that control was no longer in his possession. By the end, Odin is left in the hands of someone he attempted to control, and his killed by the person who had consequences from his control. Odin is a fleeting and manipulative character, his manipulation onto the realms was so vast that up until the beginning of the story, his narrative impact was concrete. To watch this control break down up until he has nothing left, not even a singular goal through the crack, is both a satisfying endeavour, but also a daunting one: knowing no character can have the concrete answers of the universe is a reality odin could not accept for his entire reign as all father. This denial led him to the deserving and daunting death that will impact not only the characters around him, but the 9 realms itself.
