Love this song! I work in a tall building. We lost a wonderful person in John. Just lost my mother also. Saw him live and he was a one man band!! Peace and love to all!! Happiness to all. RIP to my dear mother!!

I'm 19, but I didn't start listening to this incredibly creative guy until 2005... too late to see him live, unfortunately.

I never saw him and I certainly should have. I’m thankful for his songs that live on. He was a truly incredible talent. He’s on my Rushmore.

He was a friend of my family. At this festival he was very ill. I was always haunted by this song when I was a child. We love you, John. Shuffle off to your great reward.

John was a favorite at the Philadelphia Folk Festival amd performed at the 1999 festival for the last time. He always got the crowd involved and leave us singing all the way home.

I only saw him perform about 5 times, but he was alway gtreat, always worked hard to entertain. This is likely my favorite John. H. song. A sweet wistful song from a good guy.

Heard this song on NPR in Vermont and fell in love. The version I heard was raw and sparse.. like this one. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a version like this out there. Just one that recorded a little more contemporary and w/ multiple background singers and a few key moments. LOVE this. Great Video! Thank you so much for sharing:)

For anyone who has actually lived this song it is one of the saddest ever. If you belong in the country never leave it.

I used to play that song on my college radio station and think "that will never be me." Well, thirty-eight years later, I'm getting set to retire, riding the subway to my fifteenth-floor office in downtown Atlanta, and ... yep, that was me.

I'll always remember John doing this song in Hartford Connecticut's Bushnell Park with a backdrop of the gold skyscraper home of United Technologies and the older granite Travelers Insurance tower.

For sure. I found it via Gillian Welch. That's a good version too -- we never really need an excuse to listen to David Rawlings -- but this is maybe even better.... lighter... enfused with some of Hartford's humor and maybe even hope.

I spoke to Gene Shay last year about releasing some of the archival footage from previous years. They started videotaping every performer in 1985, so there should be some really great stuff in those archives. I don't know where that project stands, but Gene (who started "Sliced Bread" record) thought that it might be doable if there was enough interest in the project.

You should listen to the Jones Street Station cover of this song. They do a four part gospelly harmony, and do a beautiful job. Makes the song that much more sad.
