love your videos. I respect what you do and share on KZitem. i have a question… when you get to triple and quadruple refining your metals, at what point are you limited by the quality of the chemicals you use in the refining process? I don’t know much about chemistry, but i can assume that higher quality or purity chemicals would make for a better or more efficient refining. Just curious! Thanks for working so hard to share your work with us. It’s really fascinating!
@AndyGraceMedia

The fact he did so many refinings - the oxalic acid/ammonia solution - then used H2O2 to re-dissolve as chloroauric acid, then dropped the gold out at the end with an SO2 gas generator, which itself was bubbled through sulfuric acid means the purity is going to be spectacular. I'd love to see what a X-ray fluorescence machine says about it. My bet is it's more pure than the accuracy of the machine. That gold could probably be used as a decent calibration standard.
@canonicaltom
2 жыл бұрын
He's basically at the limit, where he stopped the video. Any more refining steps and he's not going to be able to remove any more impurities due exactly to what you mentioned, the impurities in the industrial grade nitric and other chemicals. If you wanted higher purity, you can get trace metals grade nitric, for example, but something like electrolysis is likely to be better and cheaper.
@sreetips
2 жыл бұрын
Usually two refinings get the gold to three nines - if your careful. But every now and then I get something in the metal that follows the gold. If you watch the first video that produced the ingot that I featured in this video, then you’ll see. If I plan to sell the gold to people (other than the big refiner) then I must be certain that the gold is as clean as I can get it. If I’m selling to a big refiner then I can just melt the gold after the nitric boils with no further refining. Because he will just throw it in with his next batch of gold and re-refine it himself.

I wonder how often aqua regia forms naturally in mineralized rock and how often gold is leached into suspension? If I remember correctly it's uncommon for gold to be liberated by natural processes like sulfuric acid decomposing granite or something like that. Curious what is in those orange puddles that have an iron smell I'm always avoiding stepping in.

To achieve this they can conjure a half million ounces out of thin air, paper gold, and offer it for sale when demand for gold heats up. @sreetips

The scrap gold I work with only has traces of lead from repairs done with soft solder that contains lead. Traces only. The reason it’s so important to remove lead with sulfuric is that lead, in just tiny trace amounts, will ruin the ductility and malleability of gold. That is why I add sulfuric even if I don’t suspect the presence of lead. It’s a preventive measure to make sure that my gold is lead free.

Here is the real reason: making these videos is hard work. It’s almost become a drudgery. I’m getting old and it’s just not as fun as it used to be. I only sell gold that I can be certain is very high purity. Getting it that way is tedious, dangerous, and a giant pain. I’d much rather melt it as-is after one or two refinings, then send it in to the big refiner. A lot less hassle, much simpler. But, I can get a much higher premium by making a detailed and interesting video (mine are the best - on the entire internet) and then selling it, as a novelty, to people who want to own a little piece of my work. When these grams of gold from this batch are gone I’ll do another one and sell the gold from that process. It may be time for sreetips to retire. That is so cool 👍🏽 if you were to sell it, would they try to give you less than spot because it wasn’t refined at a refinery? Also how much did you roughly spend on chemicals? Thank you for the awesome video sir 👍🏽

I’d guess less than $50 in chemicals - all in.

Yes, they probably would (try to give me less than spot). But if that be the case, then I’d just keep it. Gold is worth much more than printed paper money. Their published “spot price” is rubbish. People are clueless about gold.

Sreetips : you ought to do lead cupellation 1st , by using lead oxide to fire assay refine the gold , the lead gets itself and all other base metals out ! The gold bead left behind is at .9998 24kt. , and even better... it's much cheaper than going thru a king's fortune in Nitric acid ! Save the AR wet assaying for the final chemical wash !
I was taught that lead could end up in the gold if both metals were being melted at the same time in the same room together. Avoid lead “like the plague” if I remember correctly.

@@sreetips : That's wrong Sreetips! Only 1 electron separates Gold from Lead ! It's what the Alchemist's have been trying to do , get lead to except that other electron. { Sorry , I have too correct myself... Lead has 82 protons & Gold has 79 protons ! Now if Lead can somehow be forced to decay more thru radioactively by loosing 3 protons & 3 neutrons & 3 electrons }

My wife calls me Pete. That’s what people called me back when I first met her 44 years ago last month (Feb 1978).
