Lol, I did a "mini" 7th refinement on a tiny fragment of this sponge gold. I dissolved a tiny amount, it wouldn't even show on my milligram scale, in HCL and household bleach. It all dissappeared and I had the beautiful gold colored Choroauric acid. I then added sodium bicarb(household baking soda) until foaming stopped. Filtered into a vial and the next morning I have beautiful, shiny gold particles in my vial! I was only trying to neutralize the acid and did not expect the gold to drop back out! Thank you again!

This reminds me of one lab project - preparation of high purity tin(IV) oxide nanoparticles obtained by treating a solution of tin(II) chloride with ammonium oxalate and igniting the dry precipitate. If you are after clean precipitation, you can also use hydroquinone, which is one of the best reducing agents for gold [1]. Oxalic acid is also excellent but make sure there is no excess nitric acid in your solution (since oxalic will decompose and the CO2 released will shift acidity of your soln). Using cold dilute solutions is also an advantage in obtaining clean, well separated precipitate. All this is well described in textbooks for quantitative chemical analysis, namely gravimetric methods. There is also a homogeneous precipitation where you have just single solution instead of having to mix two solutions. The precipitation reagent is generated in the solution (in situ) so the precipitation is well controlled and proceeds homogeneously throughout the entire volume. That's a crazy reaction! As a chemist, seeing new cool reactions really excites me. Also, whenever you are boiling solutions in smooth glassware, I would STRONGLY advise you to always provide nucleation sites for steam bubbles to form by adding a stir bar, some sand or boiling stones, in order to avoid explosive boiling. You could very well have shot your gold solution to the ceiling there at 10:15. I've seen it happen, not fun😬

Have you tried getting the gold out of a circuit board that has multiple layers? Example, some of the newer processors are just a silicone chip covered with a Copper/Nickle IHS on a multilayered board with just gold pads.. Wondering if those boards the chip is glued to have gold wire sandwiched between the board layers and if it's possible to extract that gold. I tried to look this up, but there isn't much info on it. Wondering if burning the boards is the right answer.
@sreetips

John, I’ve done gold plated pins, pentium pro cpu, trimmed circuit card fingers and SIM cards. They were all fun to do, and I got to make some videos. But the yields on these are tiny. I don’t process much escrap these days. And everything is getting smaller and thinner.
@JohnD-JohnD
2 жыл бұрын
@@sreetips Yeah, I watched those. (Thank you for doing those) I'm sitting on about 40 processors that are built with those multi layer boards and just gold pads on the bottom.. The chips themselves aren't worth much in terms of their processing power since they are about 8-10 years old each.. I'm just wondering if there is gold between the board layers and if it's worth it to process them. I haven't seen much info on how to process these types of chips. Most of the videos I see are the ceramic chips or the Pentium Pro chips where they smash them up and process them. I have no doubt the pads on these can be dissolved off the boards and processed, but I agree, the amount from just the pads would be tiny and likely not worth the chemicals.

As you can see, refining gold is not quick and easy. It takes roughly the same amount of time to refine a couple rings as it does to refine a couple ounces. This is why most refiners will shy away from such a small quantity. I’d hate to have to do it for a living. I only work on stuff my wife and I find at local sales. Do you have a video or could you explain the advantages vs disadvantages of using this process vs aqua regia?
@sreetips
2 жыл бұрын
The advantage of aqua regia, it’s faster than h2o2 but you could have excess nitric (bad) after all the gold dissolves if too much is added. Or if, God forbid, you premixed the AR three to one or four to one - it matters not which, both guarantee that there will be excess nitric in the solution that must be removed before precipitation. Why? Because the presence of excess nitric will cause platinum group metals to precipitate with the gold, if they are present. Using hydrogen peroxide to dissolve completely eliminates any problems associated with the presence of excess nitric because there’s none in the solution to begin with. But it is much slower than AR. Hope this helps.
@Zeke-id2bo
2 жыл бұрын

Hi from Argentina! This acid can be used to refind silver!?
@grebulocities8225
2 жыл бұрын
No, the first acid is HCl so it will drop out the silver as silver chloride. AgCl on the surface of the silver would protect the silver on the inside from reacting, so it wouldn't be a good way of converting to silver chloride for refining. As for the oxalic, trying to refine dissolved silver with it would be dangerous: you'd get silver oxalate, which is explosive.
@sreetips
2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know that - thank you
@grebulocities8225
2 жыл бұрын
@@sreetips Yeah, that's one of the reasons that oxalic acid is only used as a re-refining agent - using it on something that contained a lot of silver could be dangerous, and you'd get other metal oxalate salts precipitating too. Granted silver oxalate isn't as sensitive as other explosive silver salts (e.g. fulminate, nitride, or azide), so the risks are lower than for those. Still definitely something to avoid though.
