Nice. I would describe Golden Russet as complex but harmonious. Many complex apples are a little chaotic, especially sweet 16. In golden russet, the sugar, tannin, flavor and acidity all just seem to come together in an orchestrated symphony. I think that concept of harmony or coming together as a package, should be a standard criteria in tasting. Sweet 16 at it’s best [to me anyway) doesn’t have much ocf the anise’ just almond/cherry. But it is still chaotic and somewhat disharmonious. Golden russet is like bach. Sweet 16 is like the perfect rock n roll girls band I haven’t ever heard yet. Maybe bad reputation by the runaways. Exciting, delicious never harmonious. Gotta love them both. Here sweet 16 is pretty early and doesn’t improve with age. In a year where it tastes of anise i wont even eat it. In a good year it is amazing, like spicy cherry candy.

One year my sweet 16 were very good and definite strong Anise taste and smell with hints of cherry and almond. But mostly the black licorice type of hints. I think the cold nights we have here really play a big factor in bringing out the taste in some varieties

Really great to see such a good objective test of sweetness for each of them, cheers!

Nice 👍. From my research it seems to do well in warm climates. Definitely on my Scionwood list to get next season.

These readings seem pretty normal to me for the temperate climate I am growing in. It is rare to find apples that have a Brix over 15 in Northern Europe. It could be that the PNW climate is similar. Golden Russet with 19 is still amazing. I have never had a Brix reading that high over here.

I put in a golden russet and a sweet sixteen last year. Hopefully, in a few years I'll have some to try!

The best apples are the ugly apples It got augly from all that sugar and taste popping out of it. I planted one this year. I am looking forward to biting into one.

Results are pretty much what I would expect. I’m not a fan of honeycrisp. Other than the texture, to me, they’re one of the worst tasting apples available. I like super high brix apples. If it doesn’t leave my lips and hands sticky it’s not good imho

Store bought honeycrisp tend to be too big and flavorless. Homegrown are usually very sweet and delicious. Make amazing dried apple chips
