The Goliath tracked mine or "Leichter Ladungsträger Goliath" was a series of two unmanned ground vehicles used by the German Army as disposable demolition vehicles during World War II. These were the electrically powered Sd.Kfz. 302 and the petrol-engine powered Sd.Kfz. 303a and 303b and they carried 60 or 100 kg of high explosives depending on the model. They were intended to be used for multiple purposes, such as destroying tanks, disrupting dense infantry formations, and the demolition of buildings or bridges. Goliaths were single-use vehicles that were destroyed by the detonation of their warhead and while thousands were made, the type was not considered a success due to high unit cost, low speed, poor ground clearance, vulnerable control cable, and thin armor which could not protect the vehicle from small-arms fire. The Goliath was also too big and heavy to be easily man-portable. They mostly failed to reach their targets, although the effect was considerable when they did.
The Gustloff Volkssturmgewehr was designed by Karl Barnitzke of the Gustloff-Werke for the Primitiv-Waffen-Programm or "primitive weapons program" in 1944 and was intended to be used by the Volkssturm militia. The rifle was made from January 1945 till the end of the war and roughly 10,000 were manufactured. It was chambered for the 7.92×33mm Kurz intermediate cartridge like the earlier StG 44 assault rifle and also used the same detachable 30-round box magazine. The action was a gas-delayed blowback based on the Barnitzke system, whereby gas bled from the barrel near the chamber creates resistance to the rearward impulse of the operating parts, which ceases when the projectile leaves the muzzle, allowing the operating parts to be forced rearward by the residual pressure of the cartridge case. While not an especially accurate rifle, the Volkssturmgewehr was adequate for its intended role and offered considerably more firepower than a bolt action rifle for the sort of urban combat the Volkssturm would be involved in.
