Compared to brushed DC Motors in locos, these are near silent
@masteristscalerailroadmodels
3 жыл бұрын
@@jannickcst Yes, this is called magnetic flux or magnetostriction effect. Given the comparable power output older DC motors are louder indeed however this has nothing to do with brushes. It is because their magnets were made either of iron or mild carbon steel. When material is softer it tends to deform more due to magnetic stress (parts of rotor repelling and attracting to different parts of stator). Modern electromagnets are more durable which means they deform less under the load. As the result they are quieter under the same applied force. I imagine these are some hefty traction motors yet their volume and timbre is comparable to DC motors of Soviet commuter multiple unit train where each traction motor is only 150hp, 600hp per car kzitem.info/news/bejne/mGuV2oBopImEopg

I worked on locomotives for over 3 decades. I still love railroad sounds and up close and personal mechanical. The whine you hear are the bars of the traction motor commutator on the brushes and the meshing of the pinion gear to the axle gear. You can listen to these sounds and know they need servicing.

Am curious how comfortable these GEVOs ride with the self-steering trucks compared to the Hi-Ads that are standard. From what I've heard these locomotives ride much more nicely than their EMD counterparts, which is probably why they've surpassed them in sales and use.

@masteristscalerailroadmodels

The train wheel has a slight conical profile with 1:20 or 5% slope. On turns centrifugal force pushes outer wheel outside. This works out well as outer wheel now rides on the wider side of the cone while inner wheel rides on the narrower cone end. kzitem.info/news/bejne/wp2annZjbGOTnXo

Not the motors, the gear drive connecting them to the axles.
@masteristscalerailroadmodels
3 жыл бұрын
@@kleetus92 No these are motors, the magnets in them to be precise. Anything "purely mechanical" is heard on 0:18. I am pretty sure that would be either gear meshing or suspension. At higher speeds it becomes just inaudible to human ear. While if we take at 1:12 of time in the video: wheel seems to spin 120rpm (2x/second). With common freight locomotive traction motor to wheel ratio of 4.5/1 motor spins 4-5 times per second (240-300rpm). Given it is a 3 phase motor and there are two polarities - there are 3 positions where magnets on armature attract to magnets on stator and 3 where they repel from magnets on stator (attracting and repelling causes metal deformation thus producing hum vibration since even modern super-strength magnets are made of fairly soft metals if you compare with steel alloys used on the aforementioned gears). If we do the math (2Hz for wheel rotation * 5 gear ratio*3 phases*2 polarities) we arrive at 60Hz sound pitch. Verify here www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/ but type 65Hz as 60Hz is too low for most speakers, close enough and select triangular wave shape.
