I don't know if anyone mentioned So apologies if I'm rl going over something someone's already said. But the reason the tuner post (head) is shorter on the locking tuners is because you don't need space for the string wraps around the post with a set of properly fitted locking turners You won't even have a full wrap on any string It's usually about half a rap depending on how tight you pull the string before locking it.

Follow-up: Slight tuning inconsistencies have continued since replacing the tuners. I tried moving the existing strings to go over the Bigsby tension bar instead of under like you see in the video and that has literally cured any tuning issues I've had. It's significantly more stable! Give it a try if your guitar's bigsby has a tension bar close to the bridge like this one :)

Yeatzee Guitar hey does it mean you’re changing your tuners back to the original since you found that it stayed in tune better above the tension bar? I have Lubed my les Paul as well as saddle but still don’t stay in tune well...and my locking tuners on my strat worked like a dream. So i Guess the locking tuners does help contribute to tune stability right?

So this is a very useful vid. It's pretty hard for people to find info on drop-in replacements for vintage-style Kluson tuners with the 8.5mm holes and the push-in bushing instead of the 10mm hole and the hex-nut bushing. For those of us who have Japanese copies of Gibsons, they're much more like Historics than they are like Gibson USA models - including the vintage tuners (usually Gotohs). So it's very useful to know that these drop-in replacements exist. Locking tuners are fantastic for speeding up string changes which is very valuable if you break a string live and don't have a backup guitar.

With regards to the plastic buttons sticking out more than stock: you can use a soldering iron to heat up the shaft and push the buttons to the depth of your liking. Stewmac has a video on this on their channel you can check out.

Im my experience and and purely accidental I had two guitars that had locking tuners and it only helped a lil bit even with nut lube and from what I could tell a great cut nut. I was give a few tusq nuts to try out and holy crap holds tune for weeks with intermittent noodling then the real test when your drunk buddy goes on a bending spree for an hour straight and I checked it and d and g strings barely a cent or two which could be the strings stretching. The guitar with the trem is a strat with 5 vintage nickel springs and 10s and it was decked which helped. Great Vid my man!

I had the same issue with the 'just drops in' Gotoh tuners yesterday with my PRS SE Pauls guitar. I had a round file so just filed out a little bit inside the holes and it worked out fine in the end, but was a bit annoying.

locking tuners don't help tuning stability, they are to make string changes easier. You have tuning inconsistencies because on a Gibson, strings go at an angle at the nut. Then you have a tune-o-matic with a Bigsby and the string grinds against the saddles and gets stuck. Start out with using Big Bends' Nut Sauce at all contact points. If you want to have even better tuning stability, Brian May came up with a roller bridge back in the 60's -- it worked for him incredibly well. So get a Wilkinson roller bridge. Cheers.

@@KudaBear-jy1zl well, if you stretch out the strings and put them on correctly, they are not going to move. If you are in a pinch, yes changing strings with locking tuners is a lot easier and the strings don't need to be stretched out as much--tuning stability right away.

I think the reason the bushings are not level is because the holes were not drilled at the right angle. More wonderful Gibson quality control issues. This might also explain why the E and A strings rub against one another, but for the slightly different reason; the tuner holes were drilled in a 'v' shape, which is really not a great idea, take prs and musicman as an example; the 'v' is the opposite way around, as a result strings will never rub against each other in this way.
@blackmetalchemist

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I can even see how the peg for the E string is closer to the middle of the headstock than it should be in comparison to the high E. Not shit talking his guitar at all, if it's his dream then right on. But gibson needs to get their shit together if they're going to hold their instruments in high regard and sell them for $3k.

Nice video. Very useful. I think your low E string hole has been drilled a fraction over to the center, at the factory. This a common thing on early Gibson's, which is causing your close touching situation. I have seen this before on other Gibson's. But nice tuners and video. Thanks.

Nice vid Yatzee! Locking tuners is a good start but put on a roller bridge instead of the stock bridge, and also let the string pass over the tension bar instead of under it. Less friction points.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a decent roller bridge replacement for guitars with the historic sized ABR bridges. If your guitar has a nashville style bridge they are plentiful. What's actually helped the most is restringing it with the strings going OVER the bigsby tension bar. The guitar stays in tune MUCH better now :)

Great video. I just bought a set for my Les Paul and was looking for a tutorial, thanks. Regarding the 6th/5th strings almost touching at the tuner heads... same issue with heavier gauge strings. What I found and works wonders (and helps to keep the guitar actually in tune!) is get a String Butler by Dietrich Parts. Look it up... I'm sure you'll benefit from it as I did!

Nice review. I've been thinking of changing out the Kluson turners on my Gibson Les Paul '52 Tribute to locking tuners mainly because I'm not a fan of restringing (nor am I a fan of the Kluson's). So I like the idea of locking tuners making the restring job faster and easier. The Gotoh turners seem like a good deal price wise and ease of installation (as well as looks). By the way, that is a great looking ES-330. I'd love to have a ES-330 (with Bigsby) to go with my LP. Thanks again for the review.

Instead of having to put the ball ends on those post, these go straight through the bar. Check out the newer player series gretsch guitars and you can see them on there. Supposed to be better tuning stability and way easier to string.

YeatzeeGuitar. I've already installed these same tuning machines, and given that I had taken the stock nut out from the instrument, in the present, I'm waiting for having installed a new bone nut. After using these Gotoh tuners, in terms of staying in tune, would you say that your ES330 is a more reliable instrument? In other words, would you say that it stays in tune better than with the stock original tuning machines? Thanks in advance.
