They are retaining the "loan" scheme for first home owners. Not such a bad thing. I'd be happy enough to go that line. Australia issues grants for successful first home buyers and doesn't expect stamp duty payment. It may be only a matter of time before we go down the same line.

@@macunion1225 If you are receiving any portion of the $2.9 billion tax break for landlords, then you are effectively bludging off the NZ taxpayer as the current government is borrowing to deliver this tax break. New Zealand’s biggest banks can make changes to rules around lending on rental properties making it easier for investors to buy existing properties in direct competition against first home buyers. People live hand to mouth because of external factors reducing their buying power. There is no sympathy for landlords and property investors complaining that they are having to contribute to the cost of their own investment.

In 2024 there are about 25,000 families on the waiting list for social housing and about 3,000 families in emergency housing (This is 28,000 families or roughly 60,000 people). Funding for 1,500 places (people) is a drop in the bucket. "Elected to do the right thing"" - yeah right, here landlords have $3bn in tax cuts. It was not the right thing to do to remove interest deductibility. The NZ tax system is heavily biased towards property investment. It does nothing to increase housing supply either. Providing 30 years zoned land does nothing to address the immediate issue of the massive shortfall of both social and standard housing supply. NZ doesnt have a fiscal problem as mentioned. A comprehensive capital gains tax, inheritance tax, gift tax and shifting the age of eligibility for super for those able to work are all viable policies.

Historical if National and it coalition partners had built state houses at rate of 1,000 every year since 1993. Then there would be 15,000 extra houses as at April 2024. So National has created the problem by not investing in infusrtucture.
