This is the 5th or 6th largest pipe organ in the world. Everyone running out at the end of the service and not staying to listen to this is doing nothing but taking something SO grand, and SO special for granted. I guess it goes to show what an under-appreciated (if not lost and ignored) art the organ really is in this country. We have to do something about that.

I miss going to this church.......the music was always, always wonderful! When church would dismiss, I would always hang around and listen to the organ being played. I wouldn't dare leave! :)

Beautiful piece. I am a bit in awe how in tune this organ is. It must be a nightmare to keep it in tune with that much sunlight shining directly on it everyday...

my Episcopal Church used to have this fabulous organist and I would walk to the back of the Church and listen till she finished. That was 25 years ago and we haven't had a organist since that good, those are few and far between. This piece being played by this organist is magnificent

I have used this fabulous piece for bridal processions since 1970!😊 of course I don't make it all the way through. usually ending shortly after the second page. But, it works beautifully.

and it sounds a heck of a lot better than trumpet tune, or God forbid, wedding march.
@califdad4

the wedding march was originally a parody it was not to be done seriously , and some Churches don't allow it to be played in the Church because of it. I actually haven't heard it played in years

+bonobo2go In 2010, it was a huge Church, with a huge congregation , if you notice there are people also coming in after the people are mostly gone. They had a bunch of services on Sunday Mornings . I like Tom Leonard's playing too, I would have been sitting there like the older guy is

It is too bad that everyone walked out. The missed a great piece of music played on an Amazing organ. I've never heard anyone ever open it up as much as they could. Then again you don't need to for this piece.

@OrganoAeternam Not just do I agree, but unfortunately most people my age (20) probably don't even know what a postlude is! Anothe really good recording of this on KZitem is one at Saint Eustache in France. The music is majestic.

I love good organ music, but it is the postlude, we are supposed to leave during the postlude, the next service at CC was going to happen, if you notice people are coming in and sitting down for the next service

It's amazing how many churchgoers don't appreciate good organ music. What a shame. They're probably thinking "Let's scram so we can get a good seat at the buffet..." Amazing....

I was in that church in 1982 when the workmen from Fratelli Ruffati were assembling it. I complemented their work but the guy working on the console replied that he wished they were not building it, it being done only for size and not quality or musicality. Anyway, some test fanfares from "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam" with the hanging high pressure en chamades were impressive! It is true that the space is far from ideal for an organ that size, or any size actually.

That’s very interesting to hear that. It is a harsh environment for an organ but Christ Cathedral has really done a marvelous job at making it much better. After it was totally reinstalled and completely voiced, Dr. Fred Swann played it and said this is truly the most magnificent organ Ruffatti has ever built.

Its amazing to me how most people feel as though the closing voluntary is simply traveling music or "background music" the service is not over until the last chord shimmers away...what a shame...

I have to add my two cents to those that bemoan the mass exit of the congregation. I was a church organist for 30-plus years and this, sadly, is all too typical. Organ postludes, regardless of how well prepared and played, are invariably "traveling" music and God forbid you should play them too loud so said masses can't hear themselves chatting on the way out the door! Too bad culture is not appreciated. Their loss!

My understanding of Postlude is that the full intent of this music is to be big, boisterous, and loud enough to "clear the house", in order to prepare for the very next service; not to perform the last piece of the organ concert. As an organist and pianist, I too hope people will appreciate my hard work, and hours of practice. However, please remember where we are, and the purpose of this music. Celebrate God's word, but get out! :-)

People have all the time in the world to “chat “ after the service, but as the postlude is an integral part of the worship service, they should accord the respect that it deserves, instead of hastily heading for the exits.

When I was organist of St. John's Darlinghurst, Sydney, I had cause to play Parry's "Jerusalem" one morning in memory of my Mother who had died shortly before. At the end of the very moving piece, I looked up and was amazed to find the church still full! No one had moved.

They remind me of walking through a mall, people oblivious of such a great piece. But that seems to be the way of church services these days. Closing voluntaries are virtually ignored by but a few with the rest being irritated by them with a probable comment being, "speak louder, I can't hear you for that noise"! One could play "three blind mice" and they wouldn't have a clue nor would they care if they did.

I agree, it's very stressful. Perhaps a few words by the ministers/priests/masters of cermoney/presiders would help. I honestly don't believe most have any grasp of the talent required to render such a work, let alone the thousands of hours of practice and dedication necessary to utilize and bring such talent to bear. It's a problem, and I think so across our nation. Maybe the world.

OrganNLou mentioned in a thread below referring to this majestic work of art being "The March of The Christians". Now, if someone could compose another majestic piece and title it "The March of The Christians" in Honor of the "Holy Morons" who appearantly do not have enough since to come in out of the rain and display what quality upbringing that they missed out on. But on the other hand....You can't fix stupid, no matter how hard you try!
