You have to know that he was as sweet and loving in real life as he was on the show. What a gentleman. What a talent.

I always loved Grandpa Jones! I guess he was going by that stage name since he was in his thirties. My maternal grandparents grew up in Nashville, but had to move to California during the depression like so many others, but my grandfather came from a large family and visited back home often. He stated taking me back with him when I was very young. A brother in law if his worked for a large company there and they usually had tickets for the Opery available if you asked for them early enough. On a trip with my mom after he had passed away, we went and saw Grandpa and Ramona. Poor Grandpa lost his pick and was looking around on stage and Ramona saw it first and retrieved it for him. They were such a nice normal couple that even though I had seen him so many times on tv, I really felt an attachment to. He was always one of my favorites on Hee Haw. Like everyone else, I was shocked at the news about Stringbean back in ‘73. I was only 10 years old then, but only recently saw the clip of Grandpa on Hee Haw telling the audience of his close friendship with Stringbean and his wife and how they bought the farm together. That must have been horrible for him to find them. I’m glad it didn’t rob him of his calling to make people happy. As far as I’m concerned, he and Ramona were top notch folks and I’m glad I got to see them in person even in an impersonal way.

I’ve saw Reba,Alabama; Charlie Daniels, Alan Jackson etc. but I saw Grandpa in Atlanta once and I have never seen an entertainer hold an audience in the palm of their hand like Grandpa did.
