:::Additional Off-Map Artillery Tips::: 1: in deployment phase place your artillery spotter (for off map arty) closer to the enemy for a more zeroed in effect of fire. After you have placed your fire missions move the spotter back to cover, BEFORE exiting the deployment phase. The pin-point accuracy of your fire missions will still work. Conversely, you could place the spotter farther back and then edit your fire missions if you purposely want a lot of dispersion. This is useful for "scheduled support only" type of weapons so you can saturate more ground with rounds since you're "guessing" where they might be. 2: don't waste HE shells when using the "zero in" feature - use Incendiary rounds if possible. Smoke rounds can be highly valuable under the right circumstances. 3: in a campaign take note of what types of artillery support you receive after your request on turn 1. Do the same thing a few times and take note of how many total are available and what goes where (various factors affect this). Does it appear you only receive 3 arty spotters when you requested 5? Prioritize what units should get them, and only reinforce 3 with firesupport!!! This might seem autistic, and it is - but you can and should repeat this until you get what you think is the most desirable fire support for each unit that you have requesting it. For example, scheduled only support only would be ideal for attacking a fortified hill or village (places where YOU KNOW the enemy will be waiting...) while normal off map fire support would be ideal for a unit covering normal terrain. 4: in a campaign place a supply unit right behind the "hottest" spot in your line. They will resupply your on and off map artillery. This is CRITICAL. Even though you will probably only have 1 or 2 supply units, they can basically ensure a massive amount of fire support every turn for the units within their supply radius. I find this particularly useful when on the defense or consolidating my lines/gains in preparing or withstanding enemy counter attacks in the long term... 5: preferably use heavy artillery (15cm or larger) rounds against buildings. While 7.5 to 10.5cm weapons will surely suppress an enemy in a town, they might not bring down buildings and kill that many enemies. 6: by default the enemy AI targets objective key points on the map. Click the flag icon to see these points. Take care in your unit deployment for battle phase. It might be wise to wait to occupy a small village that is also a keypoint. The AI will surely call in artillery on it and well... if its heavy say good bye to your platoon. Take cover elsewhere and move into the village after the enemies initial barrages, if possible. 7: treat your artillery spotters as though they are the most precious units you have, because they are. I rather lose a whole infantry platoon than 1 artillery spotter! Artillery wins battles, infantry mops up. :) ... you can move your spotter into position to just barely call in the fire mission, than immediately pull him back into cover. (assuming radio use)

Thanks for the info and tips! Nr. 3 is obsolete for the new BG system. Here is how the new feature works: 1. Select a BG and open the BG list. 2. Right-Click the BG symbol thats left of the BG name (and above the "reserve" buttons). 3. Select a spotter from the list to instantly attach it to the BG commander. Done! Hi WarSimmer! Very nice video. Although I am not a beginner, I always find your videos very well crafted and like watching them. I totally agree with the mechanics you showed here. They do work. However, one of them looks more like a bug, as far as I am concerned. In the manual, it is written "Typical layout of target designation transmission consists of an observer connected using wire (or voice) link with the battery commander. Which in turn is connected using wire link with the firing platoon commander, which designates targets for battery guns or mortars using voice." In the case where the battery commander is inside the same unit as the firing platoon commander and the guns/mortars, ie the same box at the bottom of the screen, the setup you showed in the section "Proper Setup" actually uses the firing platoon commanders as observers. So there is a discrepancy with the manual that states that the firing commanders should be the ones shouting orders at the guns and not the battery commander. This leads to a second bug (in my opinion) with the "player controlled observed fire" without communication between the battery commander and the firing platoon commmander. If you use the battery commander as the one who must have eyes on the target, ie the one in front, and leave the firing platoon commanders near the guns in the rear, a wired link is necessary for the guns to shoot on the designated target area. And this seems more logical, considering the mechanics of communication in the game. I have noticed these discrepancies for a long time. I would like to know your opinion on it. Do you think it is a bug? Has anyone else spoken about this thing with you? I have suscribed to your alerts. Keep up the good work! I really appreciate it.
@TheWarSimmer
5 жыл бұрын
This seems totally more logical. I never understood why you didn't need a wired connection for observed fire and chalked it up to a problem with the coding. It isn't logical and feels like cheat mode. I actually made a post in the forums to confirm just the other day because, as you said, it made no sense. Very interesting that it works as "it should" if you use the battery commander as the spotter. Gotta agree with you that it must be a bug or something. Did you ever try to bring it up with Andrey?

@@TheWarSimmer I never took the time to write a proper post for this strange behaviour on the Steam forum. As I am sure you will agree, this game is rather addictive and time-consuming and I even try sometimes to stay away from it... until the next time I fall into it :-) There is also another real bug for the zeroing-in of off-map artillery. I noticed it as I often use smoke shells for zeroing-in as a way to save HE shells. When I am low on smoke shells and ask for more zeroing-in tasks than I can afford, the first tasks will consume the smoke shells and then, if there are still remaining zeroing-in tasks, they will still be called. As expected, no shells will come, but the benefit of the triangle will be granted as if the zeroing-in had processed normally. This is clearly cheat mode! Finally, if one day you plan to make a video on how the score of operations is computed (not the one at the end of a battle, the global one for the operation), I can send you some observations I wrote down and have never published.

I really appreciate this in-depth video guide, if only my own troops would watch it! I'm running into situations where the spotters inside a platoon for observed fire, even with wire links, will just sit and stare at their observed fire mark and it will sit at 0%. Even left the game running at fast speed for 10 minutes in game. Still 0%. Mortars have fire control set to player. They just sit and do nothing. Sometimes right at the start of the mission the percentage will climb, but then it resets to 0 and sits there.

I get frustrated at times as well. Especially with the battle editor, rather than the campaign. It seems like that mode doesn't work as well as the operations. Great video buddy! I wrote up my comment and noticed that there is a version of it below. Basically, the units/men that you are calling "spotters" for your mortars are actually the individual mortar team commanders. So unless I am totally wrong, you have inverted how it is supposed to work. The way I understand it, the Battery Commander is supposed to be the spotter/observer who relays back the fire mission to the 3 x "firing platoons" / mortar teams via a comms link. By using the firing platoon leaders as the spotters, you would have 3 x sets of targets being relayed back to a single commander who then has to pick one and shout it to 6 different teams who need to make sure they have heard correctly over the din of battle from 100m away. Are you sure you have it the right way around? I may be wrong! :) The technique that you are referring to when adjusting fire is "walking fire" and it is a pretty key technique in the game to hit positions that are near to the limit of your LOS. Adjusting fire is a very standard part of training, and once a mortar team is aware of exactly where their shells are landing, they know what each adjustment to their sights and tube does.
@TheWarSimmer

I have always done it the way mentioned in the tutorial- my initial line of thinking was that it made more sense to have multiple spotters in case of losses and that the battery commander (being the "leader" of the platoon) should not be placed close to front line combat. However, after reading both yours and Ian's explanation, it appears that you are both probably correct, and it makes more sense logically. This would explain why the communication mechanic works as it should (link required) when setting up the way you described. Perhaps the reason you don't require a linked connection via the method I used in the tutorial is simply because of a bug. It always seemed cheaty to me that one wasn't required with this method. I'm not sure if this "bug" has been addressed with the devs.
@TheWarSimmer
5 жыл бұрын
I wish they would put in a new symbol to differentiate between the mortar team commanders and battery commanders, rather than it just being a flag for both. Yeah, the battery commander is always far left on the bottom toolbar, but it would still help. Especially when in combat and you're looking at the troop emblems above the unit's head for quick reference. It would be nice to quickly see a unit on the field with binoculars or something so you could instantly know "oh, that's a spotter". Would also help end the confusion between who is supposed to sight targets and who is supposed to relay the commands.

The field artilleryman in me cringes everytime I hear "squad" being used to describe groups manning weapons equipment. For reference (this includes mortars) it's: Normal Designation / Field Artillery Designation Squad OR Team / Section (1 section per gun/mortar/launcher) Company / Battery (3-5 pieces per battery) Headquarters Company / Headquarters Battery (no firing elements, comprises the FDC [e.g. "spotters"], Battalion level command and support staff) *Note this is US Army, however MOST armed forces operate under similar structures. Also, typically you would NOT group elements so close to one another. This is to minimize casualties in the event of counter battery fire or direct attack. Typically pieces are placed 100-150 meters apart. This varies depending on situation, terrain, number of pieces, etc.

Let me know if this works! Ill try it the next time I play. @KomradeCPU
4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, first of all thanks for your tutorials, those brought me back into the game after a while and I had to refresh my memory about how to deal with the chain of command when it comes to artillery. I do have one last question, though; in my german campaign, I have infantry platoons that have a single 5 cm mortar as a support weapon. To reliably use them, should I place the commander of that platoon within 100m of the mortar while the company/battalion commanders do the spotting and relay the info via wire link? If that so, am I somewhat obliged to keep the mortar team, in this case, very close to the platoon since the platoon commander would have to relay orders to both the mortar team and the infantry squads? I could test it, just a bit lazy but I got everything else working, it's just this example with the way the germans combine a single mortar with infantry under the same platoon. Have a great one man, thanks for all the information and tips.
@TheWarSimmer

The general rule with mortars attached to platoons is to order them around like they are part of the platoon. They will automatically support attacks and defend positions, and won't be stupid about it. Just leave AI control on for them- which it should be on by default.

24:42 The observed fire is no longer valid, as people now suddenly complained in forum calling it as "cheating" because your spotter can go everywhere without wire connection. An old issue brought back. Now instead of fixing the issue, the devs responded, by making observed fire almost no longer existed as they are going to make sure every players focused on automatic fire. Enjoy not able to use your on map artillery, as now everything is automatic fire. Good luck getting all your battery to respond to your command. Even with wirelinks, half of your gun battery will not respond even if you moved your spotter by fucking 100 metre. I'm gonna ditch all my on map artillery, and probably bring back Napoleonic Wars gunpowder cannon instead. Warsimmer can i get your advice on player observed fire for artillery, for mortars it works fine, but with artillery the only spotter that will work is the battery commander, the firing platoon commander unit (3 men) relays the order initially the target goes up to 7% then drops back to zero and stays there... Everything is correct as per your video and other forums. Now if i swap the firing platoon units to have the battery commander as spotter, and the firing platoon commander units next to the guns its works fine. (I used the same range and visual spot for spotters and checked indirect fire is OK so my question is why wont it let me use the firing platoon commanders as spotters? i even tried having the battery commander next to the guns and gave him a simple target and the target area stayed at 0% it works fine with mortars with either commander or firing platoon spotters (just like your example above) I have played 400 hours but this has me stumped...

Don't quote me on this, it has been a while since I played. But I believe that the devs decided that the way I explained it in the tutorials is not the way they wanted to go with it. Not sure if I agree with it, because your entire unit is wrecked if that one squad dies, but I believe that is how it works now.
