Where is Chris Cairns, he had a better Test batting and bowling average than Kapil Dev, his ODI stats were also amazing. Kapil Dev scored only 1 ODI century, Cairns got 4 in about the same number of matches at a much better average. If you look even further and analyze their home and away performances Cairns is consistently better. If you're going to rate Kapil Dev at 6 you are looking more at longevity than achievements. Respect to Kapil Dev who once held the record for Test wickets but he got those records by playing a lot of matches rather than superior performance, he once played a 3 Test series against Australia without taking a single wicket. By the time he broke Hadlee's record he had played nearly 50 more matches. How does he not rate in the top 10? And surely Jadeja has to rate a few places above Ben Stokes?

I don't know of anyone who witnessed Sobers in action who doesn't regard him as the greatest cricketer they have ever seen. I would have considered putting Imran ahead of Kallis, taking into account the former's captaincy and extraordinary record as captain (batting average over 50, bowling average of 22). But I think ranking Kallis ahead of Imran is also plausible. The Hadlee/Kapil decision is tricky. I think Hadlee was the better overall cricketer, but since he wasn't really a match-winning batsman, I can see why people would want Kapil rated higher as an all-rounder.

Imran Khan was actually a little better than that, In 48 Tests as captain he averaged 52.34 with the bat and 20.26 with the ball

@@fruitopia6798 Indeed, I undersold him slightly - he was just that good. Perhaps the only knock against him is that even in his batting prime, he didn't make 100s at the same rate as someone like Botham. That said, someone who averages 50+ is obviously a very valuable batsman even if he isn't making a lot of 100s. Btw I think your comment about Cairns is fair, but there is a widespread view that Kapil was a much better batsman than his average suggests. I once found myself arguing with someone who insisted that Kapil was *obviously* a better batsman than Imran. While I still don't think this is a particularly plausible view, I grant that someone like Kapil batting at 6 and 7 with a weak tail might be forced to chase quick runs in such a way that isn't conducive to having the best possible batting average.

If we look at Tests only they are very similar in batting and bowling averages, the major diff is that Sobers bowled a lot more than Kallis, at times he opened the bowling and per match bowled almost twice as many overs as Kallis who was more of a part-time support bowler in a team with some of the greatest bowlers ever. Of course Kallis played ODI and T20i as well compared to only Tests for Sobers, but we cannot judge players on which era they born into, I rate them equal.

There were almost no ODIs when Sobers played and far fewer Tests. So if we’re looking at stats Sobers batting average was better and so was his bowling average. Plus Sobers was WI captain for many years and was THE superstar of the game in the 1960s. For all those reasons Sobers is rightly No.1. And to be clear Kallis was a great great allrounder, he is Sobers’ only real challenger for the title of “the greatest.”

No. Kallis was better - a much better batsman and almost as good a bowler. Kallis and Sobers are well clear of the others. I think Kapil and Imran should be 3 and 4 (or 4 and 3) because the excellence of their captaincy distinguished them from their rivals Hadlee (the best bowler but worst batsman of the lot) and Botham (a great match winner but a rubbish captain).
