Kazuki Washiyama of Suspended 4th vs. Tatsuhiro Tsuge of Buxus During a recent street performance in Nagoya, Japan, one of that city's bands, Suspended 4th, invited a local guitar player to join for a song. That guitarist leads another Nagoya band named Buxus. The Buxus guitarist accepted the invitation and quickly faced off against one of Suspended 4th's guitarists in an epic sidewalk battle. In the footage of that guitar duel, on the far left of the screen is Suspended 4th's leader, Kazuki Washiyama. On the far right is Buxus' leader, Tatsuhiro Tsuge. As a footnote, the two bands share close mutual ties, and in particular so do Washiyama and Tsuge. Washiyama is a former member of Buxus. During Washiyama's stint with Buxus, he and Tsuge shared guitar duties. Washiyama then left Buxus to focus on Suspended 4th. In addition, until recently, the two bands even shared the same drummer for several years.

Love that these guys are playing on the street while smiling at each other and not caring about what passersby might think, all while creating interesting music - down-to-Earth, happy, egoless and cleaqrly skilled enough to jam freely to this degree of smoothness...so typical Japanese musicians, basically! Reminds me of Brand X more than anything, as well as Zappa, with its Jazz/Funk sound cut through with Rock/Blues guitars (the leads made me think of Johnny Winter or Stevie Ray Vaughan's tones, very Bluesy). Thanks for this great breakdown!

Jack, thank you for taking the time to watch and provide such a fantastic breakdown of that lengthy duel. I just contributed to your tip jar again. Back-to-back awesome tutorials! Just finished your Band-Maid "Hate?" breakdown, and then right back with this new one. How do you turn them out so fast? What an impressive and prolific amount of work. Interestingly, those two videos spotlight solos from each of my two favorite Japanese bass players (MISA and Hiromu Fukuda of Sus4), both videos feature awesome duels (MISA/Kanami and Kazuki/Tatsuhiro), and both videos include hybrid picking (MISA and Tatsuhiro). Cool huh?

This different setup means I can record & edit way quicker, also have a better internet connection atm so uploading and proof watching them is speedier as well. Had been meaning to try this format out for ages, but took ages to get round to it. You really are a master of spotting synchronicity, went totally over my head, good spot! Very cool.

@@JbfMusicGuitar Master, huh? Thanks, I guess. Haha, I think it's a mental dysfunction, actually. I'm also a sucker for dueling: banjos, guitar, bass.

The channel the video is on and a couple similar ones that show the Nagoya street performances are goldmines. For reference, Nagoya is a pretty sizeable city (2.3 million citizens from what I can find, 4th biggest city in Japan). While a lot of known bands come from Tokyo (or bands move to Tokyo, like Asterism did), big cities like Nagoya and Osaka have plenty of great bands as well. Also, while playing on the streets is technically not allowed in many parts of Tokyo (at least from what I understand), there are so many videos of these 2 bands as well as Gordon an a couple of other bands from Nagoya playing the streets that I have a feeling that they are allowed to play their sets without people bothering them. These bands deserve to be more known, but I guess their more bluesy/funky/jazzy approach isn't for everyone.

Great comments. Gold mine. Yes! Absolute gold mine. I cannot get enough of watching videos of that Nagoya street music scene. And, as you pointed out, Sus4, Buxus, Gordon, even Qoopie... all of which I listen to a ton, they fall at least in large part under that bluesy/jazzy umbrella which works for you and I, but maybe not everyone.

Hadn't even thought about the legal aspect of it, I wonder what's going on there?
