The fact that she wrote this song drunk and she's like telling herself.. Tis the damn season... Write this down.. to herself 😂... I can't with her.. She's just so talented.. Drunk or sober

This instrumental was a very near and dear piece to Aaron Dessner and he’d had in his files for years. But when they were filming the folklore long pond sessions Taylor went to bed drunk after a night of celebrating folklore and the next morning had this ready to show Aaron. He said “it was another moment my brain exploded because she sang it to me in my kitchen and it was just surreal”

"I won't ask you to wait" reminds me of the trope of when someone in a relationship leaves their hometown behind to pursue their dreams or go to uni elsewhere and they say "wait for me" or the other person says "I'll wait for you". But she's saying she won't ask for that even though she loves him because keeping this person waiting is unfair to him, while she's going off achieving big things, only returning for the holidays. As the saying goes, if you love someone you let them go (when you know you can't give them what they need).

In folklore and evermore there are just a few songs that are about her life, most of them (like this one) is fictional, it’s Dorothea’s perspective from the song coming further in the album

I think the “sleep in half the day” line is meant for the both of them lol. They both sleep in half the day together and in the end if he doesn’t ask her to stay when they wake up then she won’t ask him to wait for her. At least this is how I interpret it.

It’s also some kind of game, like he wants her for the weekend but does not ask to stay, and she is hesitant to ask him to wait for her because they are even. They have in common their history in hometown but she also want something more. So even though she’s leaving she knows that they have kind of the same pain inside. I find that it really fits to what you said that it sounds like a movie or something, she really wrote it down really well.

16:45 I think this part is about she (the narrator) not wanting want the life in her hometown, so she doesn’t want the person to wait for her to go back to her town so they can be together, and she also doesn’t want him to ask her to stay in the hometown so they can be together because that’s not the life she wants for herself, it’s not about waiting the person to wake up

I thought so, too. I also feel it's implied that he waits even when she doesn't ask him to, as a season is a recurring event, so it kinda sounds like she's home every Christmas and every year she ends up with the person she's talking to. When Christmas is over, she leaves again in pursuit of her career and they both wait for the next year to see each other again, even when they don't mean to. At least that was the idea I initially got.

Thank you for the chuckle. That part where you said the screen wasn't frozen had me laughing out loud. I really love listening to you talk about music. This is one of my favorite TS songs. I relate to this song. Thanks for reacting to music so we can enjoy it from another perspective!

“Sleep in half the day”. I think this means them as a couple. Together, they will both “sleep in” just like when they were a couple. But “I won’t ask you to wait, if you don’t ask me to stay”. This is her leaving and going back to LA, I won’t ask you to wait for me to finish chasing my dreams, if you don’t ask me to stay in this small town with you. A conversation it seems they had many times before. So let’s not go over the same thing again, let’s just be together for the weekend. And she knows her heart is breaking, but she needs to follow her dreams and those are not in this small town. This is one of my fave songs on the album.

I think of that movie, This is Where I Leave You. Tina Fey is married but when she comes back to town, she spends it with her high school sweetheart, Timothy Oliphant, who she didn't marry because he had a traumatic brain injury and really isn't in a place to be in a long term relationship, but they love each other. That's what this song reminds me of, that fleeting moment that is beautiful but unsustainable.

I always saw in movies Christmas like you described. I never had that but always thought it was beautiful. I'm from Brasil and here in December is very hot and it's the time for us on the countryside travel to the beach. I find it very cool how every place in the world has it's own peculiarities. Btw, really love your reactions of Taylors music.

God I love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing, it always puts a smile on my face. I think they're together, sleeping in half the day just for old time's sake (in the warmest bed she's ever known). If they don't ask her to stay, she won't have to ask them to wait, which goes to the impermanence you were talking about, like she knows this has to be temporary, and that she can't really stay because this isn't her life, or at least not right now. So neither of them say anything - kind of a don't ask, don't tell situation. They can't really wait around for her, and she can't really stay - it's just the weekend.

Dorothea (track 8) is the male’s response to this song, watch out for it. The story is not autobiographical, she kept the theme of Folklore of writing from other perspectives. There are a few songs that are about her, but most are scenarios she came up with. Love your style and how you bring out different perspectives into the forefront.

She meant “I won’t ask you to wait for me, if I you don’t ask me to stay for you.” I think reading novels out of your comfort zone would be good to develop some tools for critical thinking and analysis.
