Holst's choral music is extraordinary. It is highly underappreciated. The "Planets Suite" and military suites are excellent, but the chior repertoire represent the best of Gustav Holst. They are exceptional works of passion and need to be performed more.

Awesome post, thanks for this music which brings more of Holst's innovative and interesting work to the public.

It is of Rigveda 10.121, known as Hiranyagarbha hymn among us. Vedas are the sublimest expressions of ancient wisdom poetry and spirituality. Holst has done the best what he could by adapting those multi ended verses to his unparalleled excellent musical vision.

This recording is a bit extreme, isnt it? if I adjust the volume in such way the quieter parts are audible, the loudest one will blow up my head. :/

you are missing the 3rd movement of the first group "the funeral hymn"

Jeez what makes you think I didn't notice that? They didn't perform it. As simple as that.

The volume is far too low. I can hardly hear some of it and it isn't my tablet because other KZitem channels are fine.

After reading your comment I immediately listened again and indeed I had to turn the volume up on my sound system and headphones but the quiet parts are very audible. I used a CD whose volume I couldn't increase on my movie maker.

The hymn is actually composed under Divine inspiration by a child of Vedic age, named by tradition as Shishu Angirasa (Child descendent of Angiras clan). :) The way Holst interpreted it musically is just awesome.

If anyone here knows where I can obtain a CD-quality recording of all 14 of these hymns, perhaps even with liner notes (libretto), I'd be much obliged. Holt's approach to the Vedas was a rare success in cross-cultural art making

Where do you see that? Must be in your head because it is not in the video, nor in the music.

Hahaha Obviously not written in the score, nor represented in the video but , I imagine poor villagers calling to their gods to fight for them as everything the love dearly is being pillaged and utterly destroyed.

Fortunately for me I don't have those visions. I hear well written and beautiful music, excellently sung. That it has historical connotations is nice to know but doesn't mean anything in the end. I doubt if Holst was bothered by it. It must be tough for you to listen to Wagner or Carl Orff.

Bartje Bartmans Well ofcourse it's everything you just said but personally, music like this is an out-of-world experience , most of Holst is , and remarking Wagner and Carl Orff, no it;s not tough, since when did having an imagination or vision when listening to music make it tough. It just amplifies the emotion of the piece.

I have to hasten to add that I do have problems with Wagner's music. The more I learned about his Germanic archetyical and socio memetic influence on Hitler, especially his "Blut und Boden" theory, the more I despise the man, which makes it hard to appreciate his (otherwise excellent) music.
