I always saw Aikido as one of those arts with a giant learning curve. Something like... 2nd dan is where you finally are able use it, assuming you have practiced properly. It takes masterful finesse to win leaving your opponent and yourself unharmed. It's fundamental philosophy is why it doesn't make a "fighting" art. Kudos luckyshoes

The biggest aspect of Aikido is movement of your legs,you don't use them to trip or anything..Just the movement moves you OUT of the danger,and balance your whole body so a technique would work like a game,if you don't have propper leg positions most games won't work (Game is a throw in japanese)

It is possible to lock a joint quickly and in real life it could possibly work but some of the techniques are not just designed to lock a joint but to totally destroy and immobilize the joint. One of the reasons why its not used in a publicized world championship fight is that no one wants to get permanently disabled. But who knows how many fights masters like these have gotten into that aren't public bouts.

the reason why so many police forces have adopted it. Is that its "soft" form, it doesnt effectively knock out an opponnent, so u are ready for the next, it's a momentarely knockout, if you may. thats why many policeforces also have adopted WT, in their training program as well..

true. A lot of martial arts only work after a long time of pactice. But practicing a martial art -no matter for how long- cant be called bad. Someone with 2 years experience of aikido or even 1 year, has at least more advantage in a fight than he did before aikido. If something, doing martial arts change your idea's about a fight, and can build up your courage. all of this can be usseful.

Fantastic commitment and dedication. Deflect the aggressor - who is unbalanced why because anger/aggression does this to you.(there are better ways to lose anger) Control - balance/non aggression = winners. No competition just demos why? why attack. Plus real life scenario = broken arm, wrist, neck and death in less than one second - just as well!

Aikido is not about breaking bones :) It's not about doing anything >against< resistance or meeting force by force. I didn't believed it's real as well before I started to practice and realize It's just an application of basic mechanics. You're not striking, pushing or pulling anyone, just leading him, so you don't need to be >tought

I practice several martial arts, and believe me, Aikido is probably one of the most dangerous and fearsome :) Throw anything you want, it'll be dodged. try grappling, and you get thrown or submitted. And if you don't know how to fall or how to 'jump' then you end up with a broken wrist, elbow and shoulder, simple as that ^^ The reason people "jump" in Aikido, is only to preserve themselves... not for show ^^ Try fighting an Aikido Master and you'll understand the point ^^
@AaronAlso

only someone who has never been to an Aikido Dojo would say that. Since I've practiced for some years now I can tell you... Everyone of those attacks or "uke" was really trying hard to make a successful attack. This is the nature of Aikido, we train with intent, it looks scripted because it is in some form, but there is also a very real possibility that if you screw up your technique as nage "thrower" the uke will hurt you.

I think aikido is veeery effective yea :) but I'm also of the idea that it needs to keep evolving a lot, some great styles and branches have come out of it (others not so great) but since it is a relatively new art, I dont think it would be a crime to innovate it or change it a bit ^^

@aa3gunner There is a reason they are being "submissive". Ukemi is the way you receive techniques. This is so you avoid injury. By learning to move with the technique, you can learn to counter it. Every move the Uke (The person being thrown) makes is based in a counter to the technique. Though most of the time, it is very hard to see, and indeed many Aikido dojos do not teach the counters.

İf u look at military and police close combat books, most of the moves are the same as aikido moves. I also saw many aikido moves used effectually in cage fights . I think aikido is like pro wrestling. While the first one is scientific the second is for entertainment. They re not real fight. But u will learn alot if u whatch them carefully.

You are fooling yourself if you think you are going to understand it by watching videos. Look up and read about "Aiki" that's a good place to start. I believe Aikido isn't the only art in which it is used.

While it's certainly true that it's harder to pull off than you see in a demonstration, there's a reason many police officers still use Aikido and traditional Japanese jujitsu... and in fact it overlaps with many BJJ techniques. They DO share actual combat applications, after all. It's just that most of what you see on TV is sport oriented. Nobody who's been trained how to fights like that for real though, because there are NO rules on the street. Your eye gouge, bite and ball grap are fair game

I'm not Jiu Jitsu master, but I have studied some MMA, and I can tell you, I don't TELEGRAPH my take-downs like all the Aikido vidoes show. Also, I don't try to grab a small target like a wrist. I usually go for a double-leg takedown after a grapple or a quick and LOW shoot. I don't run UPRIGHT and try and grab a wrist. I agree that Aikido has its uses (good for women), but it won't work in real combat!

uke/attacker chooses if he will be thrown not the aikdoist. Technique will not work in aikido and forcing someone to flip or fall because of leverage or wrist locks is not the true idea of aikido. aikdio is training in ki (intention) sensitvity. The uke (attacker) will fall and flip depending on what his intention is, how strong it is, and how the aikidoist can feel the needs of the attacker and meet them quickly. uke creates aiki manifestation not the technique.

in all the jiu jitsu videos they talk about 95% of fights going to the ground. What happens before this. someone tries to grab you right? Thats when aikido really kick in. Movement that most standup or grapplers would not be used to and locks and throws and chokes and clothslines. aikido gets direct when its wants too.

-AlexWasBored most of the time aikido is practiced (at least in my experience)more from a static stance. it is not until you really start to learn it that you start doing things faster and whatnot that is why these are 'Masters'. And most Aikido technique is based on movements with a weapons. so a lot of work with weapons is done. we do alot with people attacking you with weapons, and you taking them away. it is a key concern(removing the danger of the weapon) does this explain at all?
