From wikipedia: Unusual for a major automaker, Pontiac did not have the customary "small-block" and "big-block" engine families common to other GM divisions, Ford, and Chrysler. Effectively, production Pontiac V8 blocks were externally the same size (326-455) sharing the same connecting rod length 6.625 in (168.3 mm) and journal size of 2.249" (except for the later short deck 301 and 265 produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s before Pontiac adopted universal GM engines)@LunarOutlawsGarage

I sold auto parts 30 years ago and one of the guys I worked with told customers that Chevy paid Ford to put a 302 in the Camaro. Either he knew he was lying or was just oblivious to the facts of how displacement is created.

Man this argument has been going off for years and I love that it is still relevant. Here are my definitions feel free to put me on blast: Muscle Car: any two door mid size car with a powerful (for the time) engine. IE Roadrunner, GTO, Chevelle (Big Block) Olds 442, Charger (Big Block) Regular/Classic car: Belvedere, Lemans, Chevelle (low performance engine) Olds Cutlas, Charger (low performance engine) Pony Car: Mustang/Cougar, Fire Bird/Camaro, Cuda/Challenger Hot Rod: ANY car modified to a higher level of performance. Sorry I don’t have any examples of ford muscle cars/classic cars but I am not very fluent in “Ford”. Keep up the good work!

lol ya I am not really up on the ford stuff either. I have put my hands on a total of 3 ford engines that I can think of. It is fun to stir the pot with the automotive definitions. People like to gate keep with them without understanding them, when some of the definitions overlap, and some are just poorly thought out and precluded icons from them. I like to bring up the muscle car definition, because it is flawed. You should have seen my buddy terry wheels spinning when I brought it up to him, because he is the editor of muscle mechanics 😂🤙

That's like saying if it has 4 doors it's not a muscle car.

When I was a younger 4 doors were not typically considered muscle cars. Not that they couldn't perform like one, but most muscle cars had two doors. When I was growing up a four door, that had the heart of of a muscle car, would have been more of a "sleeper" because it was not expected to perform like a muscle car. I believe those lines have definitely been blurred/changed just like the definition of a sedan and coupe has changed as well. In the fifties you could have a two door sedan or a two door coupe. It was all dependent on the window frame on the door.

10 years ago I wouldn't consider a 4 door of any kind a muscle car but as time goes on, I am growing to accept them into the fold.

When I was in school the argument on what was a muscle car was in magazines and at car shows were ever car culture existed. We never really figured it out as a group or friends or what ever. But the things we all scratched our heads about was if a car with a 273 wasn't a muscle car then a 396 Belair wagon was or a 32 ford came with a 4 cylinder flathead but you put a v8 flathead in it and that was a hotrod muscle car a 273 would make mincemeat out of that and couldnt be considered a muscle car. And the the ford torus sho with overhead cam and then the new dodge charger with a gen 3 hemi. Well my conclusion is if it's a car and a truck and it's got something above and beyond a 2 barrel and was intended to be above average in performance with power or handling like a 302 z28 or TA challenger I will except that as a muscle car or truck. Isn't America great.

Interesting , the Ford mustang was considered to be a muscle car back in the 60's and early 70's and had a small block V8 ( 289 - 302 , until the early 70's they had the 351 and a few had the 429 )
