I love mom's voice and accent. She sounds like my mom, bif and toorky. That's how you know is going to be tasty. Nothing like mom's food and her invaluable teachings. Hurray for moms everywhere.

Had tears in my eyes listening to your mother talk, I cooked lots with my grandmother ( mothers mom ) she was from Ukraine and my grandfather was from Poland, she would talk and explain the whole process every time eventhough I had helped her dozens of times I just loved to hear her voice. On my dads side it was the opposite with a little chezk and Austrian thrown in. I make mine a little different with bacon but no carrots, sometimes I put in ground pork or beef, i also leave my rice a bit on the tough side so it sucks up the juice. We use tomatoe or clamato juice depending on which is on sale, I buy 2 sacks of cabbage in early fall, 1 I blanch and freese for cabbage rolls (Holopchi) and the other I shred for sauerkraut (Capoosta). When I'm done with rolling (filling; rice, bacon, onion, garlic, salt, pepper) into the cabbage I cover them with the tomato juice so they are submerged and put bacon rind on top then pour tomato soup over top. I usually cook at 350 for 2.5 to 3 hours or until the center is 180° and cabbage is soft. Thank you for the memories, i just made some with my neighbor for Easter Sunday.

Those look incredible! I grew up eating cabbage rolls here in Appalachia. My mom's recipe was very similar although she did not pre-cook the meat mixture. She also used Campbell's tomato soup instead of V8 juice. The broth in the bottom of the pot was so good you could drink it. I personally can't cook well at all but this has inspired me to run to the store and grab some ingredients to make this recipe. I don't think I've eaten cabbage rolls since my mother passed several years ago. I'll make some in her honor.

I love this! I've been looking at cabbage roll recipes all over KZitem and this is by far my favorite. Your mom reminds me of my ex's mom, her food was my first introduction to Ukrainian food and I loved it so much, I miss her cooking every day (probably more than I miss my ex, haha!) and now I want to learn some of the dishes that I've been craving lately! I love the warmth and generous hearts of Ukrainian families. At times I feel a connection to your culture because they're so similar to Hispanic culture (I grew up in a Puerto Rican household) in a lot of ways. Valuing spending time together with good food is one of them, and something I hold dear to my heart

Hello, I am from Guatemala. We eat cabbage in soups and as a dressing in our own version of hot dog (toast bread over charcoal, guacamole, mustard, we named Shucos -since those are street food this words mean filthy food, as a kind of joke-. I try Yeats ago a similar dish at Nicaragua, street food is known as Fritanga (they cook in a griddle meat, chorizo, eggs, cheese, lot of things. I try a very delicious dish named Niño dormido (Sleeping child, literal translate); is a cabbage leaf stuffed with rice and meat fried on the grill next to the fat of everything else, wonderfull. The Halupki remans me my experience of Nicaragua. You are doing a very nice job, we do not know your culture and traditions, thank you for kindness. Happy holidays!

This is interesting. My family immigrated to the US from Slovakia, and my great grandmother passed down her family recipe for halupki to us (I grew up across the street from her), but we never put onions in ours. Or carrots. Just meat (ground beef) and rice, plus the cabbage leaves, of course, and we cooked it in tomato soup. It's really interesting to see a Ukrainian version from a much more recent immigrant family.
