I have 2 of these rigs. One was bought used at garage sale for $25 and included a 15a power supply. First mobile contact was Australia - Yes 10m mobile @ 25w from AZ to AUS. YES, the work ! The other was bought at Yuma ham fest this year. It was NOS. Never out of the box.

Kevin, these are, despite the soldered control board, very good radios. In many respects, they are better than the HTX-100s. They are more solidly built and have a better final. They do 10 meter FM at the upper end of the band - and even support repeater operations with an offset and memories! A bud and I went on a crusade one weekend in SoCal when these went on sale at Radio Shacks, Hoovering up about six of them for about $40 each. (I got a display model for $20!) Of course, when the next sunspot cycle came in, we sold 'em for a pile! (Check out what they eBay for today!) I kept one and mobiled it, working around SoCal through repeaters in TN and TX. Regularly worked AK, HI, WA on SSB as well. Would recommend you throttle back the final to about 25 watts, though. Rig will last longer and work just as well. I think there's a pot on board for that. Good find! 73 de k6whp Dit dit.

I enjoyed this video/repair. Thanks for sharing! I picked one of these radios up at a local hamfest a couple of weeks ago and had to bypass a choke on the mic power circuit. Once I sorted that out, the radio is working great.

The closer you are to the equator, the better it gets. More direct solar influence. 6 meters is also more active down there.

These were very popular with commercial fishermen - more power than a CB without the amp, and the antennas fit a modern commercial boat easily. I have one now too.

Did you check for "golden screw-driver" treatment. I'm a bit suspicious of the full 'swang' that registered on the swr meter.

I used to have a radio almost identical as this! Before i got my ham radio license i got it under the name "Jopix Itaca", it was sold in italy as 40channel CB radio, but with a simple on board mod it could be opened to be either 400ch CB, 10m RTX or both together with the press of one button I guess the outside enclosure got rebadged by many companies and some of them changed the internals as they needed?

Thanks for this! I have a HTX 252 two meter radio that I think has the same problem, except the diode is still connected! Now I gotta find a 1N5401 or equivalent (after checking to be sure). The other problem with this radio is that the mic cord is losing it's outer cover, so the individual wires are showing. Hopefully I can find a new mic or I'll have to replace the mic cord.

Any beefy silicone diode will work for the job. I had that disintegrating cord problem on a Yaesu FT-1500 and found a replacement on ebay. A company is making new mic cords for old radios.

I'll have to keep an eye out on ebay, thanks. I hadn't worried too much about it since I wasn't using the radio (got an Alinco DR 130 that I'm using now), but after watching this I may get the HTX up an running as a backup. Mother nature likes to throw lightening bolts at unexpected times! :) KF5AQF after edit - terrible trying to type before you finish your first cup of coffee!

Nice video on the Radio Shack 10m mobile. I've watched many others on YT desolder their electronics and all use solder wick exclusively. I notice that you use the same desolder iron as I and you are first person on YT that I've watched use a desolder iron. I think I purchased mine from Radio Shack 40 years ago.
@loughkb

This is my second iron. My first one was about that old and failed in the worst way. The heater shorted to the metal shell, energizing it with 120V. Blew the hell out of a board I was working on that had a path to ground. I guess any soldering iron can fail like that potentially. It's much faster than solder wick and does a better job on normal sized through-hole stuff. I do use wick for smaller and surface mount stuff.

Great video. Do you have any recommendation for reattaching the bezel to the LCD screen? I just bought one that was listed new old stock. The outer layer of the screen with the RadioShack branding, model number, and 10 m fell off. I was thinking a tiny dab of superglue in each corner might do the job. I’m nervous that superglue will somehow ruin the actual LCD screen though.

Kevin, I have one of these and the plastic cover over the LCD screen is warped lengthwise...the top and bottom curl a bit allowing dust to get in behind the plastic screen. Would it be prudent to attempt to carefully pry that cover off, heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer, then attempt to flatten it out with something heavy? If so, what would you use to glue it back on? Thanks for your help. Wayne de WD5W

I'd be hesitant to make recommendations just off my memory of the unit. But for plastics, good old CA usually works pretty well. (super glue) Just a touch of it around the edges or just at the corners would hold. But I can't remember how it was mounted in the first place. Use discretion.

Hi Kevin.i am new to this .next year I am retiring and moving up to my property just out side of the Daniel Boone national Forest in Kentucky. I want to keep in touch with the outside world via radio if in case my phone signal fails.so tommorow I am going to buy a htx 10 10meter radio I found on craigslist.used as a base unit in my home I would like to know the max clear signal distance I can hope to get out of this little radio.meaning how many miles can I communicate at the furthest to another operator.
@loughkb
5 жыл бұрын
That depends on many factors. Antenna type, height, and orientation. Propagation at the time. Geography. With beam antennas at both ends and a good height, 20+ miles direct. With active sunspots and propagation, all the way around the world. 10 meters doesn't open up too often during the solar low that we're in now. In 5 years, you might talk to the world more days than not.

I know some radios won't have audio if the mic isn't conected. from using Cb's as a child back in the 60's 70's and 80's. I got my ticket in 95. but most will work without a mic now days.

i also found a mod to save the memory. It loses its memory after its off for 24 hours. This keeps the memory for a year! Contact author. Contact author: Manolis Mizerakis SV9ABL When the radio is off for a long time it loses all the stored frequencies, modulations e.t.c. Sometimes it goes to a frequency of 7Mhz and is dead. First, the heal of the 7Mhz lock is done if during the turn on you press the function (fine pot.) and call/2 button. And for the data keep it has an electrolytic cap. 220μF/10V on the front board. It is charged to 5V and it keeps the data when power if off. It is under the frequency switch. But it's too small. I put a gold cap. of 0.1F/5.5V in parallel and it can keep the data for at least one year. Before the modification it kept the stored data about 23 hours. 73, SV9ABL

I just bought one of these radios off ebay. I'm pretty new to ham radio and studying for my license. I'm not getting inbound audio. It seems like I'm getting a signal but somehow its not decoding right. I'm not sure if you call it demodulation. I made a video about it below. Do you think this device is worth fixing? kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGxs34aNsaWkq5w
