Fun fact: Birds can't actually pee, the reason their poop is white is because it's actually a combined form of the two types of waste mammals usually release. Which means in actuality, the old mentor penguin in Surf's Up was just shitting on the main character to relieve his jellyfish sting. And that whole concept is just a myth anyway, you're more likely to aggravate the leftover stingers when you do that.
@allendepacheco3419
3 жыл бұрын
Also birds aside a few exceptions like ducks do not have a penis or vagina. They streamlined their orifices to one for both reproduction and waste disposal called a cloaca. When birds mate, the two cloacas would come together and press on each other which is called called cloaca kissing. So those sexual tensions from the movies would lead to the characters touching their cloacas together instead of traditional sexual intercourse that mammals do.

I felt like I should say this because of Pan's observations about how horny these movies are. Actual penguins are viciously horny. Males especially they don't care. Supposedly some researchers took the head of a dead male, put it on a pike, and observed as three other males tried to mate with it.

The Brazilian dub of Surf's Up is honestly one of the best dubs of all time. It not only adapted the source material well, but also used real surfer's slang in the dialogue. "If you put a gun to my head and said, 'You have to come up with a story for Happy Feet Three,' I’d say shoot me. I would have no idea. I really would have no idea. The stories creep up on you. You just have to allow the stories to come, and then they get in like little ear worms in your head and they won’t go away. If that happens and we’ve got the energy, we’ll do it is a fantastic movie a third one. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. That’s the only way you can do it. It has to be authentic. I really wanted to make this film better than the first one. Otherwise, at my age, what’s the point? You really want to make it better. If something comes up that’s really exciting and I can convey that enthusiasm to other people, then there would be a third one."―George Miller.

In Happy Feet there was originally going to be a subplot involving actual aliens from outer space, where they were taking resources from earth like how the humans were taking fish from the penguins. The movie in general was also supposed to be darker and more mature with the characters cursing. They scrapped this during the last year of production. I think where the "dissatisfaction" comes from in both Cars and Surf's Up (and allow me to disclaim that I'm biased because I love both movies) is that the "sports" aspect of the movie is really only meant to be the initial hook, while both the mentor-student bonding and subsequent "philosophies" about the respective sport and environment (the Arizona desert/the ocean) is meant to be the real meat of the story and where both films' strong points lie. I'm really not invested in either racing or surfing, they're just not my sports, so the ultimate lack of either in these films never actually even struck me, much less did they dampen the experience for me. Also. I have never seen Happy Feet 2, but I can hands-down guarantee you that it's better than Surf's Up 2. Not even heavy drinking made that film bearable.

I think this is a case where despite looking similar the films serve entirely different purposes, it’s hard to properly compare them. Happy Feet is an INCREDIBLY high stakes movie for our characters, their mistreatment at the hands of humanity and the ignorance of the elder penguins give the film a weight. Surf’s Up, on the other hand, is the ultimate feel good movie. The stakes are absolutely minimal for 99% of the movie, besides the one scene in the “boneyard” the film is incredibly chill and totes that theme proudly.

I always liked Surf's Up way more than Happy Feet. It's ironically the more happy and relaxed of the two films. Love the voice acting and the stylized animation more, too. Also, I agree about the actual surfer testimonies in the middle of the film 15:35. Just makes me feel really good. Glad to have weathered another year (this one especially) watching your videos. Happy Holidays, Pan.

Both films are anomalies in a number of ways, Happy Feet is the more complete feeling film, but the faux-doumentary framing of Surfs Up is a novelty that should be attempted more often with animation. It could bring fresh cinematography to the medium and as animation you could make "documentaries" about subjects otherwise impossible to.

I enjoyed both films, I remember really wanting to see Happy Feet in theaters, but we got it on DVD instead. I also really liked Surf's Up mockumentary format. I had no idea it was improv.

I really like the contrast in the music. Happy Feet has more ice themed music while Surf's Up has beach themed music. Also Surf's Up is a childhood classic.

I'm very open to the Idea of thicc penguins, but if we're going to do it they should absolutely be required to be properly anthro. If they're anthro then it's just more design creativity/freedom, and I'm down for a bit of furry now and then. If they're still mostly realistic like in Happy Feet it's just disgusting, It feels like the sickos behind it looked at a regular IRL penguin and thought "I want me some of that" *shudder*.

I can't believe how perfect the retro ad at the credits was. Obviously, it had CGI Penguins, but it used the Beach Boys' Little Saint Nick in its soundtrack. Happy Feet has a couple of Beach Boys' songs on it, like In My Room sung by those adorable penguins, and Surf's Up shares a title with one of their albums.

So about those UFOs you see in Surf's Up: those are actually a reference to an old Sony Pictures Imageworks (the aimation team behind Surf's Up) theatrical short called The Chubb-Chubbs that aired before Men in Black II. It's a little Easter Egg throughout their animated movies as it was the first thing the studio ever worked on, in order to test their CGI capabilities. On the DVD release of the movie, you can actually watch another sequel short they made in the bonus features menu, (fittingly) titled The Chubb-Chubbs Save X-Mas, which was how I learned of its existence.
@RebelTaxi

I figured it was that. Tho I skimmed it and couldn't find a UFO in that short beyond 1 in a parking lot.

For 2006, Paprika also came out that year that was easily the best animated film but as far as stuff general Americans knew, yeah, Monster House was way better than Happy Feet, honestly, I think even Car's waa better than Happy Feet.

18:13 actually I feel that actually work’s really well for the film, the entire theme of the film is to not care about winning or view the sport as an outlet for success but to just enjoy the sport for the sport itself. Chicken joe “doesn’t” care about winning or losing he just loves surfing by itself so he was embodying the main theme throughout the whole film (and in the end he one the competition because of it weather he even cared for it or not)
