Great Story on that wheel, and awesome Video. I almost gave up on my 81 fxef couple years back. Throwing parts at it wasn't working out well, but I stuck it out and got her running again since then I've almost gone through the whole bike. I owe that in part to men like you who take the time to make videos and pass on your knowledge explaining what isn't always in the Service Manual. For that, Thank You Sir and keep up the good work!

G'Day from Australia Pacific Mike, Just wanted to shoot you a quick message/comment to let you know how much I appreciate you fine videos. What a joy it is to watch someone do something that they are not only very good at, but also obviously extremely passionate about. You would think that given the huge amount of interest in vintage Motorcycles, especially Harley Davidson, that there would be a plethora of quality step by step videos out there. But unfortunately, this isn't the case... Its not like there are no talented mechanics, just take a look at "Born Free" videos showing invited builders bikes, amazing. But no really thorough fix/maintenance/ general "how to" videos. There are some one offs that are OK, and a few series types that are either swearword filled ego trips or videos that are exactly like being in school, and just as boring. (I don't have a real problem with these guys as they were the ONLY thing out there that didn't make you pay to watch for a long time). Those guys just don't have your fastidious expertise, an almost perfect distillation of trial and error, many years of real word experience, knowledge that has been handed down, in many cases, only a degree or so from the guy who invented the trick, tool, or part in the first place, and your never ending search for "perfection". Is perfection possible in the world of motorcycle maintenance? Sounds like a question for Robert M. Pirsig... I even think you may be one of the few motorcycle mechanics to have read his book, as eye opening as it is boring (every biker should read it, ONCE). I saw a Bob Ross comparison in the comments, but I don't think that is right. Mr. Ross is softly spoken and soothing to watch, Pacific Mike on the other-hand is Deeply spoken, with an underlying harmony and confidence that, to me, is reminiscent of Mr. Johnny Cash. A few other things I like, shades of the 1960's aka a certain book by Hunter S. Thomson, again, a must read for bikers. Shades of the 1960's aka Deep Purple... Has had an earring and longhair since it could land you a night in jail. Still rides his rigid Pan-Head that is probably worth more than a deposit on a house, all the time, in fact, "any excuse will do". Embodies all that is good about bikers and biker culture, IE: -Brotherly Love -Not afraid to show mistakes and/or glitches -Keeps his Ego in check (and his Evo) -Go's out of his way to help others in need -Will acknowledge and talk to other bike riders, regardless of bike "brand" -Puts up with neighbours "squeaky" little dog. -Reminds me of Rick Griffin, a comic and rock poster artist who designed not only 2 or 3 Greatfull Dead Album covers and Hendrix concert posters, but was a nice guy and Harley rider. (died at 47 when he was hit by a van while riding his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle) -Teacher and keeper of sacred knowledge. -Sharer of aforementioned knowledge, with the world, now, and forevermore. Kind Regards, Gareth aka bobber_chopp

I know this is an older video - but I just wanted to share a tip I was given many moons ago: after getting the fasteners just a smidge past finger tight, I get the bike on the ground and work the front end a few times. Straddle the bike, grab the front brake and bounce the forks a couple times as best I can. the purpose is to "align" the for sliders to the axle and avoid even the slightest deflection in the forks and sliders. once thats done finalize the torque on the fasteners. It may well be a process that is more ritual than practical...but its what I do.

Mike, towards the end of your video, you said to make sure the fork leg is floating. I recently fixed a flat on my 08 softail, and what exactly do you mean by "fork leg floating" ?? Thanks in advance for your answer.
@pacificmike9501
6 жыл бұрын
Sorry 'bout that. By "floating," I meant, "not stressed, or binding." The fork leg should not get pinched or held to one side or the other. It should locate in an "unstressed" position. Then, after the axle nut is tightened, then tighten the two bolts on the fork cap. Again, no binding or stressing. I hope that clears it up. Sometimes, the hardest part is picking the right words.

Hey Mike, another great video... I am reworking my new (to me) 76 FLH, is it ok to TRUE a wheel with the tire on the rim? and does it matter if I balance the wheel before or after truing the wheel? Thanx TD
@pacificmike9501
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Truing a wheel is a serious endeavor. When you're finished, all spokes should be torqued evenly or the wheel is not strong. Truing should be done with the tire, tube, and rim band removed. Other wise, you don't know how far the spokes protrude into the rim where the tube seats. Balancing should be done after truing and mounting rim band, tube, and tire.

Another timely video! I just rebuilt the 16-inch, star-hub wheels on my '53 Pan. I replaced the heavily corroded rims and spokes, and rebuilt the star-hubs per my service manual. I then spent the next 20-hours learning how to 'true' spokes. Per the shop manual, 16-inch wheels require a 11/64-inch offset from the rim edge, to the hub center surface to ensure the wheel is centered. That meant that the spokes on one side, would show about three threads, where the other side was fully screwed in. Once completed and 'trued' I mounted the tires, and installed the wheels onto the bike. Imagine my surprise when both the front and rear wheels were offset to the left side of the bike by 11/64-inch? If I had ignored the service manual, and trued the wheel equally on both sides, the wheels would be center in the fork/frame. So what's going on? Should the '53 Pan wheels be offset, or is the service manual wrong? The bike rides fine......but I like to do things right. Will I be spending the winter months re-trueing my wheels?
@pacificmike9501
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, "learning" wheels is a long process. I always like all of the threads covered, but as long as they go in all the way, I'm happy. Sometimes it takes talking with the manufacturers directly to get the proper length spokes, and sometimes we're too critical of ourselves; probably a good thing.
@pacificmike9501
6 жыл бұрын
I believe those wheels are supposed to be centered. Along time ago, an old Indian mechanic friend of mine taught me a few things about the way he did them. The old Indian wheels were offset and confused me. He told me to put the wheel on the bike (tire removed) and true them wherever I wanted them to be. I've offset a lot of wheels this way. A truing stand is a great tool. But, a motorcycle is also a great truing stand.
@jjlad5037
6 жыл бұрын
My research reveals that the original Pan rims were 4-1/16" wide at the rims. Consequently, the 11/64" offset should result in centered wheels. My aftermarket rims were also exactly 4-1/16" wide, which makes my results so disappointing. Notwithstanding, I plan to take your advise and pull the tires, and roughly true the wheel on the bike for dead-center. Then I'll remove and finely true on my DIY trueing stand (Glad I kept it.)

I'm assuming you're speaking of "late model" springers, like 1988 up? If this is the case, then you it is quite different from the old Harley springers. If one comes up, (which means one of my friends needs help), we'll do it. But we generally do whatever we need and show it.

Fair enough, and yes I do indeed mean the "late" models 88' up. I don't wish for any problems but if someone needs help, it will be valuable to document. Since you mention it, I would be most interested in the comparison of old and new if for nothing more than curiosity, but again, finding much information on any them is amazingly difficult. Thanks for your reply Sir.
@pacificmike9501

Factory service manuals show blow up pictures. But, the major differences, as I perceive them, are: The late model springers are much stronger. Due to some differences in geometry, the neck bearings need to be replaced oftener. Instead of straight bushings at all pivot points, the late model unit uses "spherical bearings," which require frequent servicing and rarely get it. I'm sure I'll be doing another one eventually. They're a great front end, but need to be properly maintained to function at their best.

And it seems those neck bearings need more frequent adjustments as well. I've heard that about the other service as well, and have endeavored to learn all I can about doing it myself, and have begun the process of gathering the very special tools to work on mine. Thanks for your reply. I'm adding this to my knowledge bucket on these which I'm filling a drop at a time. I'm enjoying all your vids very much even though most may never be something I need, but it's all pretty fascinating.

If you're running solid lifters, readjust after retorquing; just good practice. Adjusting solid lifters on any overhead valve Harley is basically the same. Adjusting hydraulic lifters is dependent upon the recommendations of their manufacturer. Good luck! Sorry I don't know what you have.

Hey Mike! Tx for all the invaluable info! Im about to put new tires on my 81 shovelhead. The only jack I have is a Craftsman yellow jack rated for 1500 pounds. Are you familiar with it? Reason I ask is Im gonna have to leave bike on jack for possibly 2 wks. It has locking tabs that, when at desired height, you back off the hydraulics and it stays put. Is there anything else I should do safety wise other then just strapping bike to jack. This is my first time doing this so I wanna make sure Im not missing anything. Tx!

@pacificmike9501

Thank you. The bad news is, "You'll have to change tubes and lower legs completely." The good news is, "You're gonna love it." The later assemblies are much nicer and easier to service. They're much simpler and they work better. If you want them to look like they belong on your bike, you'll need to use units from FLT (big dresser) bikes. They have the pretty tapered lower legs.

Hello Mike, My 71 Electra Glide handle bars are askew. There are videos online that show how to correct that problem, but none dealing with a older Harley-Davidson. Do you have any suggestions or maybe a video showing how to re-align these old forks. I also tried their method of the “ push down on the forks , I couldn’t get them to compress even a little bit.
@pacificmike9501

First, I'd want to know why the forks don't collapse. Are they maybe frozen (that's tube stuck to bushing)? It sounds like you've got some issues that would make me guess for you. I don't want to do that. But,from what you've told me, it sounds like complete disassembly and reassembly. But, I'm just guessing without more information.

I can't see it from here. The "single brake disc" is usually mounted on the left side of the fork leg (sitting on the bike, the left side). The disc has mounting holes that are either counter sunk or couter bored. The sink goes to the outside. If for some strange reason, it's getting mounted on the left side,, the same rule applies.

Sometimes you have to "transpose" numbers when mixing late and early. Sometimes referring to the books for optimum torques on specific fasteners will help. Either a machinist's handbook or even a late 80's up Harley service manual has charts with bolts by size and grade for their optimum torque settings. Worth looking at.

@pacificmike9501

I think you're referring to the set screw holding the axle end cover on. It really depends on who made them. There are a lot of them around. If it's the set screw you're looking for, simply buy a couple different sizes and see what fits. Try 10-24 and 8-24. That should get you there. If it's the fork cap nuts, they are 5/16-24.

Is that oem fork legs, cause it does look like a 11.5'' floating rotor, and a old fl only allows 10'' rotors. Or did you switch the legs with a newer 41mm model?
@pacificmike9501
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are 2000 something 41 mm complete leg assemblies using 11 1/2" rotors, 1 inch axle, and a late model wheel hub. Those are also 2000 something four puck calipers. There is a 11.9 (?) inch rear rotor utilizing an enormous 4 puck caliper from a 2008 Dresser. This bike is getting a sidecar and I felt, "The more brakes the better." It's for my dog.

The legs are complete units for a late model FLT. But, they utilize 41mm tubes. Therefore, they fit the original oem, 41mm trees. You'll need all of the pertinent parts, wheel hub, rotors, axle, calipers, and, to refit the front fender to clear the calipers. This is an undertaking operation.

I learned early on that if a speedo needs rebuilding, there are companies that offer that service. As a little kid I used to mix broken alarm clocks together to make one good one. Drove me nuts. Early model speedometers can be quite valuable and worth spending the money on. The rest can be replaced. If you put on a lot of miles, you will replace speedometers. Good luck with whatever you decide. Just opening it takes special equipment.
