As a giant on the ultrarunner scene, Harvey Lewis III is a household name to those who love long-distance running. However, until recently, in his town, he was just Mr Lewis, the teacher.
Nonetheless, since winning the Big Dog Backyard Ultra once again in October, he has become a mini-celebrity in his own right, receiving honks and cheers of joy upon his presence.
Harvey Lewis isn’t new to the sport. Beginning his running journey in the 1990’s, Harvey has competed in some of the most decorated long-distance events in the world. He has represented his country several times at the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 24 Hour World Championships, Badwater 135, Marathon des Sables and the Long Haul 100 Mile trail race.
As a non-violent protestor, he has also done incredible challenges like Gandhi's Salt March (241 miles) and the historic Selma to Montgomery (54 miles).
He has a decorated running career, with his most recent performance at the Big Dog Backyard Ultra adding to his accolades with a 108-yard (450-mile) record at the event, cementing his win.
Lake Lazerus, the mythical Race Director of the famous Barkley Marathon, holds the Big Dog Backyard Ultra. Colloquially known as the ‘Bigs, ’ the route covers a 4.1-mile radius (known as a yard) and invites runners to complete as many as they can in succession, with the final runner standing, claiming the winner status.
