Yep! As an artist myself, there's a weird sort of disconnect between the artist's concept and representation, and the real thing. In fact, i bet there are tons of looks that, on paper, looked absolutely gorgeous and stunning, but once made in real life, looked like.... well..... kinda awful. I wonder if those pieces theyve kept just because it would be too expensive and too much of a waste to get rid of them or scrap the idea altogether...

About Dior: actually the idea wasn’t inspired by Greek mithology... the video was made by Garrone, a famous Italian film director. If you see his work, everything is inspired by medieval fairytales, where aesthetics and costumes are crucial. So, the video is mostly inspired by modern European art (ex Pre-Raphaelite). Not a fan of Dior but this collaboration was really cool, and you can perceive Garrone’s presence everywhere!
@GeorgeBreg

@accc9090

So you know nothing about Greek mythology, is what you're saying. Because every single character in the video, is from Greek mythology. Every. Single. One. Having a Pre-Rapelite style of showing those characters, as Garrone does here, does not mean the characters are not from Greek myths. It's a very cool video, I agree. But even if Garrone himself said what you claim, I would tell him the same thing I've written to you.
@alessandratulisso5026
4 жыл бұрын
Ac Cc my point is that the universe of Garrone is much more complex than that and it referenced mainly European fairytales. They are obviously based on Greek mithology partially but you have also to remember that they are also filtered by the medieval culture, and then the reinassence one. He also references the Pre-Raphaelite that reference the renaissance. I’m just saying that his work is complex and it’s not about portraying the Greek mithology. One of his movies is called the Tales of tales and it’s based on a 17th century Italian novel. So, this specific reference wasn’t made by Luke, who maybe didn’t made enough research, and in this way you loose the concept of the video and it’s beauty. Btw, this collaboration with Garrone was well accepted here in Italy because it’s easy to get the reference and everyone knows Garrone, maybe in the USA it’s harder because they don’t know him.

Alessandra Tulisso they could have at least gotten a black or asian model to play a mermaid or snail. If it was meant to be an accurate depiction of history or mythology then they wouldn’t be wearing haute couture. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the "dollhouse" idea from the Dior showcase reminded me of the 1945-6 doll fashion show, "Theatre de la Mode," that Christian Dior himself participated in. They used dolls due to post-war fabric shortage. I think it's interesting they did it again here, as it reminds how adversary can prompt (if sometimes dubious) creativity. Great video, as always!

Hi Luke! I just wanted to point out that the art on the white Dior coat you talked about at 11:04 seems to be an "interpretation" of a style of indigenous art, specifically certain Ojibwe paintings I've seen. Since Maria Grazia is not indigenous, Dior using this art style on their coats is problematic in an entirely different way.... It's not "garbage art". to many it's beautiful and significant.

Have to say the Guo Pei looks with the elephant heads floored me, I'm in love! And thank you for commenting on her almost exclusive use of white models. They've been doing it for ages and it's baffling to me why they're hired when she's based in China and there are so many talented and gorgeous Chinese models they could cast. And this collection being inspired by African wildlife is beautiful but the casting of a white model just further drives home how everything about Africa in terms of nature and fashion is praised and adored but the people get no credit or love. I hope that her and her team see the backlash and harm this causes and make an effort to cast models of other races.

I always lov your fearless commentary Luke, but I have to rectify, about the - albeit questionable - Dior ; The clothes were also made for real size mannequins, not only for the dolls. So they are purposed to be eventually fitted to and worn by actual human bodies ! (you can see it in a video a french youtuber did with vogue where she visits the dior atelier) Also, as some other comments have said, the miniatures are how the fashion industry dealt with post WWII, and I think a quite ingenious thing to mirror for our current covid restrictions. PS : While we love your sassy, (probably more "successful" -- as in appealing to a larger audience, which : yesss get that monay!) videos, I think a lot of your viewers would be interested in digging deeper in certain sociological-artistic points you make - I understand you take your channel in the direction you want, and make it successfuuul - but like, just saying, I don't have 1/100th of your knowledge and I want to know why Maria Grazia Chiuri's aspirations to feminism and multi-culturalism/appropriation (like her show "celebrating" artisans in Morrocco) are poorly executed? (also to be honest the reason im so invested is that i've seen my fav feminist writer, who is Nigerian, in pictures and bein all friendly with her) But yeah we're interested! thanks for keepin us intellectually titillated xx cheers

People of all races, body types, gender identities etc, need and are interested in fashion/clothing, which means they're ignoring a gigantic chunk of their potential customers. Talking about it doesn't make it the center of attention, it's literally what fashion business is about. They also exclude and mock East Asian features e.g. monolids, flat nose bridge and wide/flat cheekbones. To be historically accurate, At the height of the Macedonian empire (Alexander the Great, 323 BC) would have encompassed Egypt and parts of Ethiopia (North Africans and East Africans) to the former Persian Empire (Arabs) and towards modern-day Pakistan and parts of Northern India (South Asians).

I'm not fan of Chiuri's work at Dior usually. And while I agree that the video was, if not racist, incredibly dumb-headed in the context of the year we're living in (doing a video of supernatural creatures that still all have to be white? Really?) , the idea was interesting. And the doll-size clothes were exactly how haute couture used to send models of their creations to far-flung clients around the world, going back to the 18th century. This is fashion history. If you're going to comment and critique, you have to know what you're talking about and not just assume, out of your prejudice towards Chiuri at Dior, that it's size-ist. If you had looked up the b.t.s. video regarding the collection, you would have heard the petits mains talking about how Chiuri had them make full size versions of the clothes THEN re-create them to 1/3 rd size for the doll mannequins. As for Viktor and Rolf, the long sleeves on the full skirted outfits were a direct reference to 19th century déshabillé dresses crossed with men's smoking jackets of the same periodor, with the spiky coat, women's outdoor wear of that period. The whole point of the collection was about being at home during the pandemic with no reason to dress for the outside unless you were forced to go out, then you put on that spiked coat. The voice-over even made some of what I'm writing plain and required no fashion history knowledge. It's not enough to be able to critique. You have to know enough to critique effectively and transfer knowledge. You do a lot of the time. But when you get it wrong or don't do your homework, it really shows and it undermines your authority.

I don't think it was racist. remember how long Eu was on lockdown this year. Eu don't have as many black or Asian model who permanently staying in EU, and during lockdown, they can't send a plane to ship model only to have a few more diverse photo. It would be putting the lives of others at risk, so priorities.

I study Ancient Greece (I have a masters degree) and honestly that dior video is one of the worst and laziest pieces of classical reception I’ve seen

I don't study it (just a huge history nerd): I don't even need a degree or college level education to notice that. The fact that with all the people working for her and all the financing she still this that, shows it was on purpose.

Actually the inspiration isn’t Greek mithology but medieval fairytales. The director of the video is an important Italian film director, Garrone. I’m disappointed Luke didn’t make some research about this; because for me as an Italian this collaboration is amazing and I’m proud of Garrone

fe421286 No need to be rude. Some of the elements originally stem from antiquity, although the video references their medieval reinterpretation, so it’s easy to get confused and lots of people in this comment section (including our fellow Europeans) have made the same mistake.
