They are not all classics but John's best songs are as good as anyone's...

I just came across this. I saw them do a songwriter circle in Sparks, Nevada in 2003 with Rodney Crowell. I was with a date, a beautiful woman, we had dinner in the casino, the Nugget, and when we were leaving Joe Ely was at the bar having a glass of wine. I said hi, we started talking, and ended up hanging out drinking until 2 or 3 in the morning. I think he had a thing for my date!

I've led and pretty western life and have seen the down side of more than a few long bumpy roads and this song has given me enough to keep it going on many occasions. Man I love this guy!

Lots of folks have covered this song, but the guy who wrote does it the best! This is my favorite performance of this song. He has a soulful voice, and he really revved it up in this video.

Love how Lyle is so into John's delivery. It's an American truth and story. Be happy for the success of your neighbor. His glory is yours. It's old school, it's gritty.

This song describes exactly how it was....."And when your back's against the wall, just turn around & you will see, I'll be there, I'll be there to catch your fall, so have a little faith in me." I guess you didn't have any faith in me, even though I was the one that fought for you when no one else did, I was the one that held you up when no one else did, I never walked away from you no matter how bad it got. I believed in us, but you didn't. That's so sad.

He saw it. The thing is, he doesn't care about anybody but himself & doesn't see that the person that was the most loyal, the most supportive, the most genuine was ME. He's looking for something else---something better, perhaps----but little does he know he isn't going to find it. There was nobody on the face of this green earth that would have stayed like I did, because there was a LOT of shit that I had to endure. Trust me on that.

Joe Cocker's version is good, as are other cover versions, but only Hiatt can deliver it as it should be.
