future of video. monitors just need to become more affordable so people can start grading. and delivery formats need to be standardized more. HLG seems like a good lace to start.

Im looking at going full HDR workflow this year, Mac Studio M1 Ultra and HDR monitor. Watching HDR tv shows looks way better than SDR. All my cameras support HLG/Dolby vision so might as well film in higher quality. Deciding which monitor to pair the Studio is a hard choice. ASUS Pro Art displays look great, MSI Prestige, ROG Swift 32. Looking to spend £1500-£3200 on a monitor but not sure which one to get

HDR is great, I was really stunned by iPhones showing HDR photos. The bright parts really pop, but it kinda looks weird. I was not expecting it to show patches of sunlight on rock as HDR bright. Or it might be oversharpened. VIdeo looks way better, I'm not sure why but the looks match what my eyes saw more. It may be less dynamic range and less sharpness applied. Perhaps having a bigger screen will make the photos look better. I think they use a similar curve to HLG, because when you send it through any app, it looks SDR.

Questions for video production 1. So when you edit in HDR, can people w/ regular SDR screens see the content as high quality? 2. How do you know when you should shoot and edit in HDR?
@Janken_Pro
Жыл бұрын
1. If the HDR signal is properly down converted to SDR format like Rec. 709 then yes. 2. If your camera can shoot atleast 10-bit Log or RAW footage. If you don't want to be limited by SDR's 5-7 stops of dynamic range and want to utilize a lot more dynamic range of your camera.

I suspect things will eventually coalesce into a single standard for TV’s but much like HD (digital aka IBOC in the US or DAB elsewhere) radio it will take a good 10-15 years to really be a thing.

super helpful, thank you so much! I'm a video editor, but I'm new to HDR workflows, and this was a great introduction. I'm kind of feeling like the technical capabilities and availability of HDR in consumer products is way out of range of the resources on teaching HDR. Like the new iPhones default to recording in HDR, but make it incredibly difficult to teach you how to properly edit/grade with it, knowing full well most people don't have HDR monitors? And there's such little support I've found for how to convert HDR footage to SDR without blowing out the highlights. Anyways, thanks for helping to fill that knowledge gap!

HDR10+ and DolbyVision are corporate attempts to monopolize HDR content distribution by requiring proprietary metadata to properly decode each HDR video stream. The reason metadata is necessary in the first place is because these versions of HDR are based on the PQ model, which specifies content for displays that can produce brightness levels over 1000 nits. Since most practical displays produce at most around 6-800 nits, metadata-driven "tone mapping" is needed to make them work properly with HDR10+ and DolbyVision HDR content. Guess who controls the transmission of those metadata streams... The best thing the HDR industry could do is to turn their backs on HDR10+ and DolbyVision, and adopt the royalty-free, backwards-compatible HLG standard, which automatically adapts to both SDR and HDR displays of any brightness, without requiring any additional metadata whatsoever.

Excellent content! I hope more people start mastering their videos in HDR. It's much more than the nits race. Additional to the high contrast you get an overall better image quality. The higher bit depth of the standard means no posterization anymore, the wider color gamut means you can play with the colors that the big studios are playing with for a long time in digital cinema. If you’re searching for independent HDR short films on KZitem you won't find much. What a pity! :) But there is a gem called "Into Quiet". Check it out. (Make sure you are watching the movie in HDR by looking at the settings icon. If everything’s correct it has a badge named HDR) If someone needs assistance in grading and delivering HDR in DaVinci Resolve, I’m happy to help. I do Color Grading for a living in a professional suite (EIZO CG3146 Prominence).

Are we sure we don't get more details in the shadows with HDR content? Since HDR must use a "wider" gamma curve it should have more luminance intervals, thus details.

I've been interested in real life HDR videos since covid19. Imo the problem of PQ is that some videos are too bright when watched at night, and some too dark in the day.

Excellent video. Does ASUS make a monitor that displays 4K DCI (4096x 2160). How long does it take to calibrate the monitor for color grading with DaVinci Resolve? Can I use this on Mac mini M1chip?
@GurunathHirve
2 жыл бұрын
Well this ProArt PA32UCG is not exactly "highest end" HDR display monitor. BVM-X300 or the ones from FSI can be called highest end. These Asus and others around 5K mark can be at best called as Intermediate HDR displays or maybe Prosumer HDR displays.
@QuicksilverSG
2 жыл бұрын
The ProArt PA32UCG can produce up to 1600 nits, twice the maximum brightness of most consumer displays, and more than bright enough for indoor purposes. It can easily handle commercial HDR content, most of which is mastered at no more than 1000 nits.
@GurunathHirve
2 жыл бұрын
@@QuicksilverSG That's exactly my point. But that 1600 Nits of brightness is not across 100% window, and it is only 10%. Whereas some monitors in 5 figure price range can do 1000 or even 2000 nits of sustained full field Brightness.
@geoffreybassett6741
Жыл бұрын
@@GurunathHirve It can do 1000 nits full field. Which is the minimum for grading this type of content and good enough for a baseline HDR grade.
@GurunathHirve
Жыл бұрын
@@geoffreybassett6741 Yeah, it's great for baseline HDR grade. But my objection was solely based on calling it highest end. Nothing else. It's certainly highest end for consumers. Because the any HDR presentation on it would simply be mind blowing for consumers.

Can pro cameras like Sony A1 shoot HDR videos natively without grading like current iPhones?
@marcusthompson666
Жыл бұрын
Why would a camera record HDR when RAW and LOG are already far beyond what displays can display. Its purely a consumer electronics marketing play and finishing/export workflow. The screen is the only difference. It can just scale the dynamic range those small values and you will not notice. If it was a HUGE nit difference in dynamic range, (which I wish it was, but it is not), it is plausible you could see banding or a mismapping of gamma ratios if the file being played is not one with enough bit depth/ color sampling or graded in HDR. As far as cameras that “shoot HDR”. Total marketing bullshit.

Stamp anything with HDR, and the 90% of people wont even notice any difference.. This is one of those things that if you are looking at it, you wont see a difference if at the same time there is nothing to compare it side by side.. which means in real life scenario, it is not needed.
