Dakotahstr - same experience for me. It’s such a classic, performed by a very classy iconic star. Too bad she wasn’t paid the millions they pay much less talented actors today. She had such financial troubles in later years. But this movie, because of her, will last forever. The story and the music are worth watching, like you say, a hundred times.

I remember before I saw the movie of the musical with my family I was already familiar with the music from the Broadway cast CD I borrowed from the library. I remember I was initially disappointed when I first saw the movie due to the fact that only a small amount of songs from the Broadway show made it into the movie. This show stopping number definitely makes up for the large percent of the songs that were cut.

I think you can see one of the fellows collapsed at the end of the dancing number, if the clip hadn't cut. Even then, it is moved off of him very quickly, but you can see he is going down. Likewise, I've heard Debbie had to have medical attention of some sorts after this number as well. Funny thing to me now is it is obvious her cheers and yelps were clearly added in later, and for some odd reason it makes me think of Lucille Ball, like a comedy skit she'd attempt by "recording our voices in later on and Ricky will never know the difference, and even if he does, it'll be too late!"
