When can we start swallowing exercise after post operative head and neck cancer patients?

Question! 😊 I’ve had terrible swelling after I had my children. To the point where I’ve had my blood tested at least three times because Drs were sure it was a lymphatic issue. But blood tests came back fine. What else could it be ?

Hi,really helpful video. I had tongue cancer, stage 3 and had chemo and radiation. All clear now thankfully but still dealing with a lot of swelling(10 months post treatment) which affects my speech quite a bit.I was told i had another year of improvement as radiation burns out the nerves and that they can grow back but it takes time.Unfortunately this is a non-linear process which means you can improve and then be set back..this happens quite a bit. I wanted to leave this comment here if thats ok ? ..so that others that may have similar problems might benefit and or share their experiences. Many thanks.

Thank you for sharing. For others to understand that the process is no linear is so beneficial. It’s very true! It does take time.

@hotstixx - I am so sorry for what you went through. Once you have cancer, it becomes a full time job - treating it and with all the side effects of that treatment.

Greetings, I have not had head, neck, or mouth cancer, but my tongue has been inflamed and/or swollen for many years nonetheless. I was an RN for a long while - one morning after I gave report to the oncoming shift, my tongue was so swollen and painful that I couldn't speak. I stopped in the ER to see if there was an infection or even a cellulitis, but they laughed at me and said you don't get cellulitis of the tongue. I was sent home. In 2 weeks, I have an initial telemed appointment with an MD from the Lymphedema Clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for my legs (Manhattan). I started noticing swelling of my L foot in my teens, but never mentioned it to anyone as I assumed it was normal. Swelling gradually increased until I had pelvic & groin radiation for locally metastasized cancer, then the edema took off. Can one get lymphedma of the tongue??? Should I bring up this issue to the lymphedema doctor or will I just sound like a fool again? I want them to take me seriously and not have them think of me as a hypochondriac. Thank you for your time.

Thats terrible that your are going through this.I can relate to some degree insofar as I couldn't get treatment because mine all happened under covid..was misdiagnosed and the finally diagnosed after 17 months. Really hope you find some care and a solution to your problem. Best of luck.

@@hotstixx - Thank you for your well wishes. Again, I am sorry for what you went through. I go to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for follow-up treatment. My oncologist had me see an immunologist and it turns out that I have a primary immune deficiency for which I get immunoglobulin infusions monthly now (I've only had bronchitis once since they started instead of multiple times a year). He had me ditch my GI doc and see one he recommended. It turns out that I had malabsorption of proteins and vitamins due to colitis and a bleeding, inflamed stomach (goes w/the immune condition). He now has me scheduled for the lymphedema clinic where they do a lot of research on the condition. I love my oncologist and wish he was my primary MD instead of my local guy. I just never mentioned tongue swelling because it never occurred to me that a person could get LE in the face and mouth. MSKCC stressed heavily in TV ads and posters throughout Manhattan that they didn't want anyone to stall treatment due to the pandemic. If you have future cancer problems, perhaps you can go to a medical center? I hope that your side effects dwindle away ASAP. All my best to you as well.

@@MossyMozart I visited back with my Prof.last week.He said I was doing extremely well and that typically those that had such high doses of radiation would not even be close to where I'm at.He put a lot down to my attitude and the fact that I stayed very active in sports and exercise for the last 10 months.Attitude is extremely important ! Stay as strong and positive as you can. Many thanks and stay strong
