I own a 981 Spyder in Guardians red as well and love it. This year I had the 718 GTS 4.0 for a test drive as my dealer wanted me to change to the 718. The steering is definitely a step forward, better feedback and better feeling than in my Spyder. I found the suspension performance wise similar, the 4.0 revs better in high end, the 3.8 has more torque on low end and feels more powerful until mid rpm, after that the 4.0 pulls slightly better. Besides that the fuel consumption is better compared to the 3.8. The clutch in the 718 feels a lot softer. Overall the 718 certainly is the more perfect car but the 981 Spyder has so much more emotions and character, especially considering its unique exhaust sounds which cheers me up so often, whereas the 718 4.0 sounds nice as long as you are not used to the 981 sound. To me the 981 Spyder is a perfect sweet spot between performance of a modern car and emotions of the good times where the European Government did not yet start to put regulations like crazy.

I chose the old Ferrari which at the time was a £75,000 360 CS or a newer Porsche 911 or the equivalent of. 15 years later the Porsche is worth less and the Ferrari has not only screamed up in price but has given me so many enjoyable miles and experiences. I have owned a 360 manual Spider and now a 718 manual Spyder. If you like attention- the 360 garners more. I find them both very beautiful cars. The glass cover of the beautiful Ferrari engine is hard to beat. The racing humps on Porsche add beautiful lines to car. In today’s market of sports cars, the 718 Spyder offers me everything I could want in a new car in terms of being analog- no one else makes a manual mid engine NASP drop top. And what it offers, and it’s crazy to say about a 6 figure car, but it is under priced. The Porsche Spyder manual ME NASP convertible is in a category of one in today’s new car market. Whether it’s a Spyder or Spider - it’s to close to call,- some days I think Ferrari - other Porsche. It’s a pick em. I think that says a lot about both cars. The Ferrari sound just can’t be replicated. Red line in both cars add to experience. The upgraded exhaust on Porsche makes a significant difference to the car. Both feel like you are driving a go cart. Metal shifter in Ferrari rare. If you can afford the Ferrari but not the maintenance, and like to take road trips in your car, get the Porsche. But just my opinion having had both. Drive ‘‘em both. Either way you won’t be disappointed.

Great review! For the 981 generation, the GT4 was the track model and the Spyder was the lightweight model. X73 is lighter than the GT parts, which is the correct choice when low weight is the priority. I agree that for track use the GT parts are a better choice but the X73 is more playful with excellent chassis balance that’s better suited for a street car. There are no bad handling Boxsters or Caymans of any generation and the Spyder is near the top. With the 718 Spyder gaining 90kg/200lbs over the 981, the 981 Spyder is Porsche’s last lightweight model with nothing lighter made since. The current 718s are good but I am disappointed with the weight gain and I hope that Porsche releases a lightweight purist model again in the future.

For GBP70k, I'd be looking at an R8 V10 Spyder manual, 991.1 C4S Cab, 991.2 C2 Cab, or a Ferrari California. A decent 360 Modena manual is certainly doable, especially if you'll consider a car with higher than average miles, but I'd be more concerned about the much greater possibility of significant unexpected bills early on. Buy one with significantly more miles than average, however, and you may get 15-20k left over to cover any such bills.

@@feelsgoodman245 Maybe you had track days in mind, while I didn't, but then surely you wouldn't buy a 981 Spyder or any 360 if indeed you have regular track days in mind. Actually, they are not directly comparable. The 981 is obviously much more modern, while the 360 requires more skills to drive hard. Anyway, the question was broadly stated. I listed some drop-top alternatives for the 70k budget, plus the 360 Modena manual, because Jay seemed to think you could only get a Spider F1. In my mind, what I listed are all in a different league. You can also get a McLaren 12C in budget, which is surely a driver's car by anyone's definition. Maybe the 360 and the Spyder will prove better financial propositions, but R8 values have risen slightly, and California values have seemingly stabilized. The 911s are a different story, but I think their values will drop relatively slowly. Anyway, any 911 is a go to car for any keen driver. Just ask the likes of Tiff Needell. ;) Of course, you don't need to spend anywhere near 70k to get a special car, let alone a driver's car. Get whatever is good for you!

Pops and bangs from the exhaust are nice if they're natural. If you've got a big V8 or something that's slurping down so much fuel on full song that it can't help but send some through the exhaust when you close the intakes then that's ok, that's character. If however it does it every single time you lift because it is programmed to then that is far less pleasing, that's just trying too hard. Yep, 718 steering feel is a significant step on (whether in the Spyder or GTS). The 718 engine has far more GT department-esque characteristics even if it's just a bored out 992 engine, whereas the 981 engine was notorious for dead spots in the torque curve and tail off at the top of the range. I switched from 718 GT4 to 360. The 360 is a far better road car than the GT4 and subjectively wins hands down on character, engine, looks, presence and gearbox. GT4 fights back with rock solid build quality, industrial grade suspension/brakes, razor sharp handling, refinement and lower running costs. I imagine most of these points apply to the 981 Spyder. They're really quite different cars and I use them very differently. A GT3 alongside the Ferrari is probably the ideal combination.

The 981 had 19 inch wheels with Pirelli P zeros and subsequently Michelin PS4s. The GT4 has cup 2s on 20 inch rims, yet I find the GT4 has a more forgiving, comfortable ride than the x73 option on the Cayman which I often regretted ordering when I wasn't flogging the car. After 2 years of ownership I am still surprised at how supple the GT4 is in comparison. Other than that, I very much enjoyed the video and please keep them coming.

The gears of the 981 Spyder are not “too long” but the inevitable consequences of choosing a low torque, high revving engine. To get maximum power from the Porsche 4L six you must be above about 4,500 revs where peak torque is developed. The 2L 4 cylinder 718 engine develops peak torque at about 300lbs/ft at 1950rpm and consequently has a far wider power band than the pesky 6. It’s faster everywhere except absolutely flat out on the Nurburgring. This is why Porsche switched to a 4 cylinder 2L Turbo. In real world usage, it’s a far better choice. Better still with the PDK gearbox. The normally aspirated 6 is a lovey sounding and super smooth engine, but not a great choice for fast touring on twisty roads where you’ll alway be in too high a gear. I had a new 718 and I have a 981S which I love, but the former was a better car IMO.

Great video. The steering feel in the Spyder/Cayman is not as good as the 992 911? Is that due to the EPS and can be updated?

The answer depends on who you are and what you want the car for. The real drivers will take the Box, the people that think they are car people would buy the 360. I would buy a 981 Cayman over them both.

The weight difference between 718 and 981 Spyder is not 90 kg as stated by Porsche. Porsche has changed how they state the weight of their cars hence the 90 kg difference as Andreas P. Explained in an interview. He said that the apple to apple weight difference is more like 30-35kg mainly because of the engine and OPFs. This is also valid for 718 vs 981 GT4.
@ActaeonLF

You are correct that Porsche changed how they weigh cars on the spec sheet and they did that to try and hide the weight increase over the previous generation. The spec sheet will shows a 300lb difference but when measured in the real world using scales, the 718 Spyder did gain 200lbs over the 981 Spyder. It can vary by spec but your typical 981 will be a bit under 3000lbs and the 718 is about 3200lbs.
@pride355

@@ActaeonLF With the similar options, the weight difference should not be 200 lbs according to AP.

AP will say anything to sell a car. He said GT3 was PDK only, then introduced a manual on the 991.2. He said PDK wasn’t possible on a GT4/Spyder, then introduced on the 718. He said the GT3 4.0 engine wouldn’t fit in a Cayman, then they released the GT4 RS. He’s a great product manager but he’s an even better salesman. The reason they changed how they weigh cars for the spec sheet was to hide the weight gain. Muddy the waters.

For their sports cars, it's all 9XX. The middle X denotes the range - 8 means Cayman/Boxster, while 9 means 911. The 3rd X indicates the generation, so a 991 and a 981 are the 911 and Cayman/Boxster of the previous gen. The generations go 3 -> 6 -> 7 -> 1 -> 2, with the 992 and 982 being the current gen and the 982 also being the 718. See, not confusing at all! Honestly I would expect this sort of thing from the Italians or French but not the Germans. The middle 8 or 9 meaning which model at least makes some sense I guess, except then there's the 97x which is the Panamera...that's also 1 out for generations since the 970 ties to the 981/991 and the 971 aligns with the 982/992. The Macan/Cayenne just have random letters and numbers pulled out of someone's arse. Someone must be taking bets on what number Porsche choose for the next generation, could be 0, 4, 5, 8 or 9. Alternatively they could just change completely, who knows.

I would not buy either. That Porsche misfire sounds more like a boy-racer car, the kind of car a mid 20's UK Pakistani would rent and rev up at a relative's wedding. If you want something that sounds like the Ferrari 360, then buy a new reliable 4 cylinder Honda CB650R motorbike for £7,500. If you use your head and want a classy well built reliable car, look at buying a used Lexus LC500 V8.

We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to replace it. We can get by, but cant seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 40years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future. Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. "You're not going to remember those expensive shoes you bought ten years ago, but you will remember every single morning when you look at your bank account that extra 0 in there. I promise, that's going to be way more fun to look at everyday", I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life...

The Porsche Boxster/Cayman is a car that if your on a good wage and your willing to splurge. You can make it work as your only car. Where a used Ferrari, even a 360 is generally something for a very wealthy person who already has a luxury SUV, a 911 and then wants to have something a bit older and raw.

I’d choose the 360 anytime over the Porsche spyder. There’s nothing more thrilling than pushing that V8 with 40 valves over 8,000rpm. To be fair, I had one, manual, with bucket seats and tons of CF, including the mirrors. That car was awesome to drive, in particular on B or mountain roads. I came close to driving that car daily. Also, that engine is so well build and direct, as long as one keeps the revs high, but that’s where you want the engine to be anyway. Maintenance costs were relatively low as there’s not much that can go wrong provided you take well care of the car (the manual is, de F1 gearbox should be avoided). I still regret having sold the car last year.. They say people buy Porsche when using their brains, and Ferrari when using their “Johnson”..well, I’m lucky to have other cars still to enjoy my drives but wouldn’t mind getting that 360 back.. Thanks for the nice video James!
