It might have been 3-5 up in Admiralty Inlet, but what you were filming was 1-3.

Thanks for watching! There wasn't anything to film. The windows fogged up nearly completely, so other than what LaZina and I could wipe away with our hands, so I could see the waves on both sides of the boat, that was it. With the boat going up and down the waves, rocking and rolling, neither LaZina nor I had an extra hand to hold a camera. If we did have a 3rd hand to film, all you would have seen is us in the cabin, holding on, rocking and rolling and the boating going up and down, all inside the cabin. We also weren't in Admiralty Inlet. There was a southerly blowing up from Tacoma. This weather is quite common and creates 3-5 foot seas as there's about 18 miles of fetch. The chartplotter, which is photographed in the video, clearly shows the small craft advisory that states 3-5 foot seas. The protected area we dropped anchor and spent the night was flat seas. We caught protection from the wind by hiding behind Robinson Point.

Had a similar experience out of Michigan City one evening heading back to New Buffalo on Lake Michigan. Flat going and insane coming home in 4-6'. Only boats out were USCG, disabled sport boat, TowBoat US and us. 8 miles took 80 minutes. The boat did great; the captain and admiral were quite frazzled afterward.

Yep, not my favorite conditions. All that fetch, i.e, open water upwind, creates a short, steep swell. I dread returning home to Bremerton Marina when the southerly is blowing.

That was great ! Thank you for telling your story. So few stories on KZitem about bad weather experiences by recreational boaters. Tugs and trawlers are such a stable hull. I wonder what could be done about the foggy window problem though. If you were solo it might have turned the experience into a "white knuckle" one.

Thanks for watching! If you watch real closely at timestamp 4:18, you'll see another RT27-OB following us (friends of ours). They missed seeing the big wake and hit it at 25 knots. They launched their boat completely out of the water, prop spinning in the air. No harm, no foul. Technically, there is no defined definition of small craft. But the small craft advisory is issued when winds reach a sustained 21knots - 33knots, with seas of 4 foot or higher.

There was nothing to film. The windows fogged up completely as the waterfall of water coming over the bow fogged it all up. We didn't have air circulation fans at the time to help. We literally could not see out the front window at all. The boat was pitching something awful, so we were both holding on with our hands to stay in our seats and unable to hold a camera to film. The waves were 5 foot, without question. The bow would crash down with the waterline coming up to about 6 inches short of the anchor. My wife would wipe the window on the port side, as far as she could reach, which wasn't very far. Maybe 12 inches around... I would do the same on the starboard side so I could at least see the waves out the port and starboard side to drive the boat. Luckily for us we were headed south into a southerly wind. We were headed directly into the waves. You can't use autopilot in conditions such as this to free up my hands.. In the video I show the small craft advisory on the Garmin chartplotter that clearly says 3-5 foot seas. I'm sorry you think we were in 1 foot seas.

When you have other people aboard and you're responsible for them, yourself, and your boat - in rough water your first concern is safety and last concern is swinging your head and handheld camera (cell phone perhaps) around to film everything. Safety first, everything else is secondary. Visibility is critical in properly handling current sea state conditions. It's easy for people without experience to judge harshly, as if you know, but if you had this experience you wouldn't make such foolish statements.

You are correct you did not see any rough seas and we say in the video that we did not film during this time as we were busy keeping the window clear and trying to stay in my seat. If we ever find ourselves in that type of weather I would feel more relaxed as I know that both the boat and captain can handle it and I would pull the go pro out. Thanks for watching.
